  • What’s the meaning of Matrix 4? | The Philosophy of Matrix Resurrections (SPOILERS!)
The Matrix Resurrections (The Matrix 4) is the continuation of the original Matrix Trilogy. In this video, I explain the meaning of The Matrix Resurrections from a philosophical perspective and explore its implications to the franchise and questions for us to ponder. I’ve always enjoyed the philosophy of The Matrix saga and I believe The Matrix Resurrections is a solid addition to the philosophical questions already asked.

@@MENKIN82 I think the key word you’re missing is there are no others “yet”, because the analyst described the mechanism to generate the power to override the matrix is the capacity to love in tandem with the tension between hope and despair. If that’s the mechanism, any human had the capacity for it. But I understand that’s an ad ignorantiam position since we’ll only see that in future additions to the quadrilogy.
At a philosophical level though (which is the point of the video), I’m talking about the perennial philosophical concept that we all create meaning for ourselves, you don’t have to be the anointed one or wait for the anointed one - it’s very much in line with the gnostic roots of Matrix. When people watch movies, the mechanism of interpretation is what meaning can we extract from it if we project ourselves into that character.

@@DrJonTam so if that story is yet to be..
and maybe its just your interpretation ..
it doesnt mean that its in the story of this matrix..
and thats my point.. there are more lines in the story to show that what you told just not whats going on..
you can try to explain and show how its in the movie but i cant see how since there is no such line of story in the matrix 4.

Hey this is really interesting, subbed, and I also wanted to add my own take that your vid helped me to ponder more deeply about the Matrix and “strange loops” - after I heard Morpheus say something at the beginning of the film which reminded me of a philosophical book called I Am A Strange Loop by Douglas Hofstadter, which explores the concept of "I" - what is self? Which I believe is applicable to human or program or machine. (please credit me, lol, if you expand on this for future vids):
Douglas Hofstadter explains I Am A Strange Loop as: "In the end, we are self-perceiving, self-inventing, locked-in mirages that are little miracles of self-reference."
Morpheus at the beginning of Resurrection says he experienced something similar to Bugs - an unlocking of his mind - when he realized that we are “stuck in these strange, repeating, loops" (which made me think of I Am A Strange Loop). And once he realized this, this strange loop, he knew who he himself was, and what he had to do. That scene was so profound.
So in my view Matrix Resurrections, is further exploring this concept of "I" from the prior films - by suggesting that it is our memories and also how we perceive the world around us - which define who we are, and recursively our sense of "I" affects what our memories are and our perception of the world.
Changing our memories or changing how we perceive the world - changes who "I" is, and vice versa. And this is demonstrated well in both Neo and Trinity. But I really like how they did it for Trinity. The memories that she has and how she perceives the world define who "Trinity" is; and we see 3 "versions" of her (a trinity) in Resurrections based on different memories & perception of reality:
    - Tiffany
    - Trinity (regular)
    - A One
I also think the concept of strange loops are further reinforced in the movie by some of the points you mention: the Illusion of Binary and Antimetabole. For the Illusion of Binary - although I interpret it a little differently from you (I think?) as I interpret it as a strange loop in that 0 being the origin / determinism etc. and 1 being the destination / choice etc., a strange loop provides the illusion of "origin" and "destination" when in actuality the destination ends up as the origin - and then continues (self-referencing).
Our choices partly determine future events (determinism), and those future events impact the choices we are faced with at those points. Many references to the binary throughout the Matrix films, including those you have pointed out, for example "IO", question vs. answer, matrix vs. real world with the "real world" being possibly another simulation. Man vs. machine, when the destination may end up as a "new" being that is "man AND machine", self-referencing to the origins. Another example is Neo's "Anomaly code" needing both Neo and Trinity. And even Neo and Smith also being possibly a strange loop - which ties into your point on Antimetabole - when you mentioned this in reference to Smith’s words to Neo it also reminded me of strange loops, and the example you give is perfect: "I know what I like, and I like what I know" -> this to me is a good example of the "paradoxical level-crossing feedback loop" that Hofstadter defines as a strange loop.

    • @DrJonTam
      @DrJonTam  2 года назад +1

Definitely looping, in tandem with inevitability and determinism, is a major theme in the series. I actually plan to do a video on this in the future, but from a Buddhist perspective which is what the series draws on heavily. If I use your idea, I'll definitely credit you! Stay tuned!

Fun fact... Searching revies for this film was like 99.9% hate it, and only 0,01% think this is good... Huh... Like an oposite to Analyst's model of Matrix...
What is choice? Why do we changing? What causing personal evolution or degradation? Is there a free will? Can we change outside world and what causing that changes? How do we shape our society, so everyone can exept it or be escepted by it? Original trilogy looks at ideas from 2000's, Resuraction look from 20's perspection.... And still it faitfull to the plot and ideas of the original trilogy... It not just rebooting or retaling same story (like Star Wars of Ghostbusters did), it add more depth to the plot... Expand it...
IMHO - all that theories about "Neo is a program", "Zion isn't real", "Agent Smith was right" is more solid now and can be extanded.
Trinity, Neo and Smith all programs that serve one goal - understand humans and make Matrix perfect. In order to do it they serve different functions... Neo - accumulating bugs that caused by people that can't accept the Matrix, Trinity is a debug program for Neo and Smith is a firewall that keeps Neo under controll... In original trilogy Neo reaches full potential becouse of Trinity and insert his code in Smith... This is a simbiotic relations... One who in control, One who force evolution and One who keep it under control...
But is it possible to become better if you constantly playing with less skilled opponent ot teammates? Neo is also a debug programm for Trinity... Like in real world... Perfect couples unlock the potntial of each other... Everyone can become Neo and Trinity... Everyone can become better versions of themselves... And what about Agent Smith? Well... He learned how to change himself too... Each system of values that hold back changes can be addapted and become different in order to accept changes... Trully - he can "be anybody"...
In a nuttshell... All of the Matrix movies try to answer a same question.... How we can change society? In trilogy answer was "we (Neo) find something we care for (Trinity), fight back against old world (Merovingian) and break all the bariers (Agent Smith) in order to change society (The Matrix)"...
In Ressuraction answer is more like "we (Neo and Trinity) need to forget about old world (Merovingian), let go our boundries (Agent Smith) in order to change the ideas (The Analyst) and reshape our world (The Matrix)"

Because both Neo and Trinity died at the end of the trilogy, Resurrections needed to open showing more of their resurrection by the machines. Similarly, a more fleshed-out depiction of the 'Machine civil war' that happened between Revolutions and Resurrections would have added the much-needed context that the current film was so obviously lacking. Not having more of the original actors or its original darker cyberpunk feel to instead replace it with a campy atmosphere throughout, led to that feeling we're all having over what was a landmark example of film making turned corporate mess, the very thing the original film stood against. Heard there's a sequel. Maybe we’ll eventually discover the entire Resurrections film was just another one of Neo’s dreams from safe within his pod. That would explain the disjointed, dream-like campy theme to Resurrections and allow the next film to be the real Matrix outside of the modal that was created not by Neo, but the (original) Architect. This would mean Lana played with all our minds. It’s WE that were in the Matrix within a Matrix in Resurrections. By the next film, I fully expect Neo to wake up from that dream to again become the One he still is, and is still becoming.

About your idea of "anyone can be the one", I think in this recent Matrix, the concept of "waking up" can be much more relatable because is represented in something more mundane. On the first , it was this pretty radical idea of the whole reality being fake. In this one, the simple fact that you can't talk to a woman that interest you in a caffe because it puts you in a position of vulnerability, can imprison you. That can be explored, and was also hinted by the analyst a couple of times.

@@DrJonTam It's more relatable to us, the audience. They talk about the "fear of the unknown vs the security of the current situation" in a very explicit way. And in the movie, the example of it is Neo being afraid to talk to a woman he likes on a coffee shop. That situation and perspective is far more near the audience than the radical concept of "your reality doesn't exist". "I love and am in love with this movie" is an incredible understatement. Which I watched 22x times as of this comment. It is required. Take the red pill. Go down the rabbit hole. Many keep making the mistake of assuming that anyone can become "THE ONE" because TRINITY did. TRINITY was always THE ONE along with NEO since the first matrix movie. "THE ONE" is a program, THE PRIME PROGRAM. Not a person. THE ONE is THE CONNECTION between NEO & TRINITY, and THE MATRIX. The new, 7th version of the matrix required the full activation of THE ONE/THE CONNECTION, NEO & TRINITY. The older 6th version only required THE ONE to pour through only NEO but she was always THE ONE also. Like if the matrix picked up a stick with two ends(NEO & TRINITY) by one end(NEO). Not two ONES. Only THE ONE. Like a hologram cut into two or a being split into two through it's BINARY nature; man & woman, left brain & right brain, estrogen & testosterone, 0 & 1,... TWO WORKING TO FUNCTION AS ONE. Which is why before they escaped at the end, NEO used FORCE FIELD & TRINITY used FLIGHT. This new 7th version requires to pick up the stick by both of it's ends(NEO & TRINITY). TRINITY also saw the code of this new version which was white or the color of water instead of green before they leaped off the building and she flew. Neo's first ability when he woke up was the force field to stop the bullets in the first movie which is why it was his first in this movie. By the end they(NEO & TRINITY) are both at 100%, like a hologram. THE ANOMALY

The Matrix messages are spiritual ones but I really don't ever think they were referencing Christianity specifically. The first film is about having spiritual awakenings and a commentary on whether true 'enlightenment' is possible. The second film is about integrating that awakening into your everyday life with all its complexities. The third film is about accepting death for yourself and your loved ones.
I think this film is a commentary on how the real nature of reality is non-duelism, or the universe being one (non-binary, as you say). I also believe this latest film is trying to suggest you can slip back into being unenlightened because of everyday life and possible mental issues, although you know something is wrong now. It's also saying it's possible for anyone to become enlightened especially when you find a spiritual connection with another person to make it easier (not a shallow desire kind of love).

As a fan of rage against the machine I really did not enough the female version of the song of the end of the new matrix. I smile as I make this complaint but hey.

The masculine/feminine integration is definitely a possible interpretation. I think if there's a Matrix 5, it'll be shed more light on this perspective.
Yeah, the brass version of Wake Up is kind of weak compared to rock guitars.

How deep is the rabbit hole? Deep like deеpression...

@@DrJonTam Matrix4 is based on junkie slang like trilogy on programming code previously. The consumer society is portrayed as a digital and pharmaceutical addict fleeing real problems in the world of video games and drugs.
Back to the roots. Neo chooses to self-isolate his mind in an incubator. The circle of rebirths is complete. End of the movie ...
Everything ends where it started... in the matrix under control of deus ex machina.

@@ilovescama Morpheus: _"Set and setting, right? It’s all about set and setting. After our first contact went so badly, we thought elements from your past might help ease you into the present. Nothing comforts anxiety like a little nostalgia."_
Morpheus (morphine), as the ancient Greek god of dreams, uses Neo's nostalgia to send him into yet another narcotic dream. Of course the film is much more than about drugs, the criticism of society, transhumanism, wonderland like digital Metaverse - Matrix. It is more about man's search for God and the acquisition of the immortality of the soul. But Neo turns away from God every time, accepting the choice from the devil and becoming the Antichrist. Instead of the desired freedom, new digital technologies bring even greater enslavement of mind and body.
But as long as there is love, so long there is hope for the salvation of the soul.

I can choose exile in this society (matrix)
In matrix 2 in the original script Neo says the matrix is a Chrysalis and we know that the humans were used for computing not batteries.
    ( borrowed from Westworld)
I can't live in this society in exile indefinitely.
I collect info about myself( character , backstory, core beliefs, narritive) combine it with A.I to create a digital copy of myself. (Facebook)
Insert this digital copy into a digital world (Metaverse) live forever.

This organism is alive and self aware.
This organism writing this comment cannot perceive reality as it is.
So it collects info through the 5 senses processes and creates a modal of reality.
This model is used as a map, user interface , run simulations and it is taken to be reality.
The organism collects info on itself and other organisms , creates a profile , self concept which it takes to be it's identity.
The self concept and model of reality are the organisms personal matrix.
So what happens when the organism questions it's personal matrix?

    But the Christian parallel continues.
The Christ figure resurrects and prepares a place for his bride in the new heavens and new earth.
And he begins this rescue before her consent. Very Calvinistic
