Thanks so much for this. JDB is incredible. Few people can play like him. Few people can sing like him. I can't think of anyone who can play and sing that well at the same time.
It’s so nice to love a song for years, never figure out the tuning/playing of the intro riff and then a video like this appears soon after JDB’s. You’ve helped me play an intro properly I’ve always wanted to play. I thank you.
Thank you SO much for confirming what I have long suspected, that he does incorrectly tell us the D goes all the way up to F. I got there eventually, but it’s great to see I wasn’t the only person struggling with this track for years. I learnt it in standard tuning many years ago and it just never sounded right! Great video.
My mate who is League's above me on the guitar has always said how great JDB is James is an incredible guitarist and also a great singer . Enjoyed watching this keep up the good work .
Hi Neil, thanks for the comment and i'm glad you enjoyed watching the video. Yes he is incredible and he is an underrated guitar player for sure. Manics are still going strong and have a huge back catalogue of tunes. Which ones are your favourites?
@@neilevans6229 yes that is a great tune. Sorry to hear about your loss. The powers of music can have many benefits from pin pointing memories and helping through difficult times which are often not always thought of.
Thanks for this great video. I remember reading an interview witu JDB in Guitarist in about 2004 where he talked the struggle of trying to play this riff in standard tuning. I salute you and your old guitar teacher for all the years of playing it the hardest way and still sounding pretty great
One of my favourite Manics intros. JD Bradfield is a guitar hero. And yes, the tuning does make a massive difference. It somehow manages to " lift" the song.
Great video! Ive been a Manics fan for 25 years and seen them about 20 times. Only heard this song been played once. This is yesterday is in open G tuning I think.
Could never play or work this out even in standard tuning, so you did well! Not many things I couldn't work out back then. I heard JDB saying the guy from RHCP uses this tuning.
Ah man, thanks a million for this… YEARS trying to play this without any joy.. can tell I’ll still struggle, but at least I can see whats going on now. Nice one 🙏☘️☘️☘️
I can't remember when I figured the tuning out, but the fingering I basically got from the video you mentioned. It's a great riff. It takes a hell of a lot of talent to produce music like this. But James has it in his locker, that is without doubt, just I think these days he doesn't seem to let it loose as much.
What a nice comment! Thank so much and I’m glad you found it useful. I really enjoyed putting this one together. If you enjoyed this style check out my Johnny Marrs Saddest Riff video
I read somewhere that a hipshot trilogy bridge was used in the original gear which would allow them to switch between these alternate tunings easily. I too was bamboozled by the tuning until I found that exact same video
I’ve always been a huge admirer of JBD when you hear somebody like him play other peoples music. You really appreciate what a talent he is listen to Sweet Child O’ Mine live on the sleeping next to plastic album. It is mind blowing.
@@RiffsRhythm it's fucking wild. the way he just absolutely rips out those riffs and solos while spinning around, jumping, etc... incredible. that video you reference is a goldmine of technique
I've chased this since I was 14! Man, that tuning is nasty. But that song is worth having an extra guitar lying around in that tuning to play this utter masterpiece at will. Always heard inspiration in this track from Life Becoming a Landslide from GATS. The real crazy thing is JDB puts music to words, which is much harder than working out a melody and finding words to fit.
Always nice to receive a guitar lesson from Lee Ingleby, Of course it is great lesson to achieve the way JDB originally meant it, but I found he made things overly complex with that peculiar tuning, and how he decided to pick some of the notes from moderately difficult positions even if he could have pick'd them much easier closer to the nut for example. I still think I prefer to play it with standard tuning, and I noticed I've taught myself it little different you showed you would play it. Just my opinion but you'll still be able to spice it up a little and make it sound great in standard tuning. Great lesson anyway, Chees!
Lee Ingleby haha Never been told that before! Be interested to know how you play it. I could of used more open strings in standard tuning but felt I got closer to the altered version.
I saw jdb video recently that you're referring to. Good to see him play that riff - my 1st thought was _how on earth did he come up with such a weird tuning ?_ (you're right btw; even he says it wrongly, lol!) In the end I concluded he must've dropped a Jazzmaster out of a 4th floor hotel window, gone down, collected it, necked half a dozen vodkas & then composed that riff. But fuck it man, it is very damn cool - thx jdb, frusciante, jimi😂
Would love to see you do a video on Nobody Loved You or The Girl That Wanted To Be God. I realise I’m probably the only person on the planet interested in this though😅
Nice upload fella! Always enjoyed guitar work by JDB however I realised he doesn’t make the fret board difficult for himself, if stretching for notes across chords it’s something or somewhere else on the fretboard.
Hey Man glad you liked the video. He plays the same way at 2:28 on the video. Although a slightly different fingering. With the video i was making a point, if you use altered tunings you can make notes rub against each other that would be difficult before hand!
@@RiffsRhythm I think so, or a mixture of James and Nicky! My little empire is a decent track 👣 but I think there are far better on the lp. Great lp btw.
If you tolerate this your children will be next, Nobody loved you, You stole the sun from my heart, Ready for drowning, Tsunami, I'm not working, S.Y.M.M. are much better songs in my opinion.

The manics are simply a force of nature. Between the 3 of them the sheer amount of power they generate on stage is astounding

Thanks for the comment. That's really interesting that he struggled to play this riff in standard. The tuning does make it easier!
one of the most gorgeous, elegant Manics tunes. fantastic riff, cellos, and Bradfield sharing lead vocals with Nicky is quite nice.

The saddest of them all... Dm. Chord Progression - Dm C Bb F - One bar each, try strumming over the top of the riff, sounds ace
