  • The blaze started about 4.30 in the afternoon of Monday the 9th of September 2019 at Peregian Springs. 50kph wind gusts pushed the fire in a north-easterly direction toward the unsuspecting beachside community of Peregian Beach. At that time of the afternoon, many people were returning home from work and school. Homes from Peregian Beach to Marcus Beach (4kms) remained under heavy ember attack, as thousands of residents to the north were issued a “prepare to leave”. The entire community - hundreds of residents - fled the town with little more than what they could fit in a car … and headed to friends, family or the evacuation centres to the north and south. It caught everyone off-guard including 94-year-old (he was 93 at the time). Miraculously only one home was destroyed and another was partially damaged, with the community hailing the rural firefighters as heroes for saving the town.

Yes, most of the south coast completely grew back, and recent rains made plenty of grass and bush grow a bit quick, with having to do with lockdown many firies and volunteers couldn't do hazard reductions earlier so now they're on the race to do them just as spring aka fire season hits off.

pretty thick of bush up peregian mate... although it probably is a factor, climate change IS NOT the only thing that made it this bad.
