if x = root(11) -3 or -root(11)-3, then putting those in x^2+6x+9 doesn't work out. You end up with (root(11) -3)^2 + 6(root(11)-3) -2 = 0. That doesn't work out.

Yes, he used multiplication because 3² or 3 squared is 3 x 3, which is equal to 9. Another ex is 5², which is 5 x 5 3³ or 3 cubed is equal to 3 x 3 x 3.

The correct one is (b/2)^2
