idk about the rules in CA, but here in NY its illegal to be digging in the dunes because you're encouraging erosion. they dont even want people walking on the dunes because you loosen everything up which makes it easier to wash away
I know for a fact it is illegal in San Francisco, but the conservation was aimed at restoring dunes that we dug up to make concrete. Not sure how it is for the rest of California's coast, but I'd assume more places have similar rules for similar reasons.

I think it’s so cool how random logs and wood just drift up on our beaches. If they could speak I would love to hear stories of where they came from and how long they’ve been out in sea
