- 12:33 PM - Shortly after my arrival to the River Grove Metra station on Friday March 16th, 2012, I pulled out my camera and caught this Canadian National freight train, which had just passed over the Thatcher Avenue grade crossing, in its entirety between Thatcher Avenue in River Grove and Grand Avenue in Elmwood Park. I unfortunately didn't get to see the road numbers of the locomotives, but I had seen this same exact Potash Corp. train just a short while earlier stopped on the CN bridge over the Kennedy Expressway near O'Hare.
12:56 PM - Metra train # 2217 heads west along the Milwaukee District/West Line tracks through River Grove, led by F40PH-3 engine # 119, named the "Village of Cary."
01:14 PM - Metra train # 2236 heads east towards Union Station in Chicago along the Milwaukee District/West Line tracks through the River Grove Metra station, stopping at the island platform between the inbound and outbound tracks. This train is led by Metra engine # 108, an F40PH-3, named "Will County" after the Illinois County of that same name which Metra serves.
@hiway51biker I did 26 months in the Marine Corps plus boot camp. I got discharged for having lied about my asthma, which I had up till I was 13 and then it went away. Nowadays, I make my living working near trains repairing rail signals for Union Pacific and being a loadmaster/baggage handler for Delta Airlines at O'Hare. I love big machinery and I spend most of my free time watching big machines work and I have a whole room at home filled with models of planes, trains, military equipment, etc.
@hiway51biker What was your MOS in the Navy? The site of the crash of AA 191 is now a huge field that floods when it rains a lot and is surrounded by train tracks and a few trucking shipping and distribution centers. There's a memorial to the crash about a mile-and-a-half East of S. Mt. Prospect Road on Touhy. As for the new runway, construction is definitely underway. Lots of huge earth-movers out near Irving Park Road and huge piles of dirt. I unfortunately can't stop because of tight security
Very nice!
The house I grew up in sat right next to a Chicago Northwestern and Soo Line railyard. Thus, I have always had a place in my heart for trains. Regarding our earlier comments we shared...do you know what, if anything, is on the site of that DC-10 crash today? So you were in Camp Pendleton? I was in the Navy in San Diego in 1981 but was discharged after a short stint. Also, do you know if construction has started on the proposed additional new runway at O'Hare? Thanks...Brian :)
Sweet!
WOW I wish I could see that room...can you possibly take a video of it for me? I only have a small collection of Gemini Jets and actually I would like an American Airlines DC-10 Gemini but they are IMPOSSIBLE to get. I checked everywhere. There is a website of the world's largest working model train display that I watch. It is located in Germany and they keep making it bigger and better. I can get you the website URL if you wish. Please try to answer my other questions from last comment...Brian.
Jose...I posted some info including the URL for the miniature wonderland on your channel...I tried posting it here but it failed so please let me know if you got my latest message. Brian :)
I checked my channel and I didn't see the URL to that German train display. Could you send it again? If it doesn't post, feel free to message it via private message to me. Did you read all my replies? Thanks Brian.
Jose...check your messages and let me know if mine made it through to you this time. I hope so. Have a great evening and hope to see more videos from you soon, my friend.
@hiway51biker Hey Brian. My apologies, but RUclips only takes so many characters per message and I last replied to you in two messages on here. I'll do my best to get my collection of toys/collectibles together soon and showcase it on RUclips. I've actually been working on doing that for a while, but I have so much stuff I haven't gotten around to it. And could you please send me the URL to that train display? I'd appreciate that. I have a few Gemini Jets myself, but no DC-10's, I think.
