This was my dream bike to own back in 79’. But never had that much $$$ as a 15 year old. Fast forward 27 years and I find and restore the big brother to this bike, the RM250N. All NOS parts from an excellent source now long gone. My RM250 sits along side her sister bikes from that year that I have also restored, the 79’ CR250R and a KX250A-5. They are my pride and joy and a blast to ride. Now almost 60 years old and will ride forever.
Glad I kept mine! Bought it at a motorcycle salvage yard in So Calif years ago for a hundred bucks. Mostly original and a few rusty spokes, but it still runs like a champ...
Beautiful restoration!). The 79 RM 125 was the first real bike I ever rode beyond a Honda mini trail. It was brand new then. I immediately found myself lying flat on my back and laughing at the sky. I was 12. I had no idea : ) I jumped right back on it and never looked back.
Beautiful job. I have one in my shed, and ill be doing the whole restoration on my channel and can't wait. My grandfather bought it for my uncle in 79, i got it in 95 as a basket case, rebuilt it and rode it till i left for college , sold it to a buddy and got it back in 2018 as a basket case again. she's gonna get the full proper treatment this time . Awesome video
Chris, come visit California lot’s to see and do. You sir are a great ambassador of motocross, everyone at Malcolm Smith Motorsports enjoy your videos.
Hi Scott thanks for your comments my friend and of course I’d love to head back to the states again because I have friends in the north in Maine and have visited Billings and Montana many times but it looks like it could be another year or so before I could fly back as I’ve always wanted to visit the Don Matthews event sometime but again thanks for your kind words and all the best to everyone at Malcom Smith Motorsports and everyone stateside.
Chris, here’s a Story for ya…I Raced a 1979 RM 125 at the Don Matthews CZ world Championships in America,Marysville California…& At that Race that I attended 5 years in a Row…Ian ,the Guy on your Shirt,Attended that Race !…we became Good Friends over that 5 year Period !….I was Very Sad when I Heard the News of his Passing😢
Hi Bobby yes Ian was a great guy and a damn good rider as well and we had some great times together both on and off the track and it was tragic what happened to him and I still miss him even today. Very much appreciate you and your content my friend 👍.. This bike happens to b my favorite bike of my 45+ yrs of Moto .. Such Fantastic memories of that year specifically 79 and all r attributed to this piece of classic iron. Im as giddy as a school girl 😁.. Watchin this multiple times.. Daaym im Old but this bike takes me back to being smack dab in the prime of Moto here in Michigan, USA .. Thx again and until next time 😉 Old G
Thanks for your kind comments Old G and your absolutely right these older race bikes have a character that you just don’t get with modern motocross bikes, again thanks for your message and for watching my content and say hello to everyone stateside.
Even better when your outclassed Honda CR125m Elsinore 1974 gets the holeshot on 2 & beats 1 back in the day, a mate owned a new one but my worked CR was Still competitive.Trev New Zealand
@@monticlassictv Chris how about doing a bike feature on the Powroll big bore kits. ? A mate had a Honda SL125 with a Californian 150 cc kit fitted - heavy bike but it pulled sweetly like a tractor. They were popular in the 1970s & 80s
PS I Know a firm in Australia that could duplicate them now: JP Engineering - send them a used piston or the cad dimensions.Trev NZ I've dealt with the owner .They have a range of common cast blanks or will do you one.Have big bore early Escort pistons too & stuff like that (do rings, pins too)Trev
This looks very similar to My bike, but it had a mono shock. One thing I liked was the power band, oh my god did fly, but being an asthmatic did not help but it never stopped me..I just loved my bike as it had a pro racing gear box.
Eye of the beholder for the fenders...I liked them, I was there when they came out...the N had a unique look and sound. The engine bolts were too small, caused longevity issues if not remedied! Those fins look rough on your sample, few other build errors noticed. Love the zooks!
hi Chris, for the looks of the plastics its a 1980 bike, i know because i bought one back in de day, the 1979 bikes had square formed fenders, but this could wel be a 79 wit 80's fenders.

Chris this was my first race bike I purchased for $1075 out the door in 1979. I took third place in my first race. I loved this bike.

I had one when I was 13 and absolutely loved it!!!!
My last race bike was the 1977 RM125, very close without the aluminum swingarm. Love seeing her rip! Subscribed.

Hey man,me too had the 79 and later an 80,live in southwest Michigan, lots good tracks here back then..
growing up my older brother had one of these and i had a RM100, great bikes
saw these in heron suzuki in horley surrey back in the day ,i think they were around £699 then.marvelous example here!

I liked that style rear fender better than the early run square one that came in my 79, Kaplan cycles said it was the rare one.
I loved mine!

I started on a 78 RM250.
I want one
My brother had the 78 RMC , we had modified all the cylinder and piston. At this time it was easy to increase the power...😉😉😉 Not now !☹️☹️☹️
Way faster on my RM 125 than on my RM 250. Never liked my 250!
The 250 felt too heavy for it's power output.Trev New Zealand
Like.
Y son iguales estas motocicletas , la 125 78 , es igual ala 79 ,
