In this Inside Out 2 movie review and Inside Out 2 analysis, I dive into the much-anticipated sequel, to Inside Out. Despite the positive reviews and impressive box office performance, I ultimately found the film to be a safe repeat of the original that didn't move me as much.
Maya Hawke's character, Anxiety, is an incredible new addition, and the depiction of a panic attack is genuinely effective and accurate. These high moments, however, don't account for the film as a whole. Ironically, Pixar's approach to Inside Out 2 seems to contradict the film's thesis. The studio has struggled to find itself amid franchise filmmaking pressures and the pandemic, which saw some of their most personal works, like Luca, Turning Red, and Soul, relegated to Disney+. This misstep damaged Pixar's prestige and reputation. Lightyear's lackluster performance and Elemental's slow success story further hurt Pixar's confidence.
Pixar, once known for boldness and creativity, now seems paralyzed by insecurity, losing sight of what made them a powerhouse. Inside Out 2, instead of evolving characters in new ways, feels like a safe bet designed to appeal to what the studio thinks audiences want. This move lacks the confidence and vision that once defined Pixar, amplifying Inside Out 2's shortcomings and exposing it as a product of anxiety.
It's natural for studios to experience growing pains, as seen with Disney Animation before the Disney Renaissance. While Pixar's reign seemed unshakable, they too have fallen prey to insecurities after misfires and poor decisions. Inside Out 2 reminds us not to let self-perception anxieties overtake our essence, a lesson Pixar itself seems to be forgetting.
Recent statements from Pete Docter about shifting Pixar's focus to mass appeal and sequels highlight a worrying trend. Audiences may not always know what they want until you show it to them, something Pixar once understood brilliantly. Let's hope Pixar rediscovers its unique magic before it's too late.

I personally disagree with you because you sound like hiphopsandhoops and you care a little way too much about old Pixar yo Boomer.
Honestly, I just loved the film, I thought it was very mature not to treat anxiety as a "villain", but rather as someone who only tries and fails,The only thing that bothers me is this new formula for making films with the "Tik Tok" aesthetic, that is, every 5 minutes the scene changes, and there are jokes all the time, and there are no moments of contemplation, or if there are, they are few moments, apart from the film having doubts in terms of plots, something I saw a lot in Nimona, but ok, right, it's not like it spoils the film, it just bothers

I agree that Anxiety is the best part of this movie and handled really well. As for the rest, I respectfully disagree. Though it's always interesting hearing a contrairian's take.

They had no reason to treat anxiety and to represent a panic attack the way they did in the movie, yet they did. Maybe you can't understand how fucking deep that was unless you actually suffer from that in real life, but they manage to perfectly show through the images what usually can't be expressed into words. That is EXACTLY what a panic attack feels like, and also when all the emotions hug each other in order to calm it down, that's exaclty what happens when a panic attack ends (a hug usually actually helps). They showed that anxiety is an important part of us that needs to be there, but it needs to be sitting down sipping on tea and we can't let it be in control of our emotions.
This movie was fantastic. I'm not saying it's a masterpiece, but it was definitely not safe. They could've very well played it safe given the fact that this movie was a guaranteed succeess, but instead they really poured their hearts into this project.
Everything you're praising is stuff I also liked about the film, and acknoweledged worked in this video, especially as someone who suffers from anxiety as well. I understood the film quite well, but outside of those genuinely great moments, the rest of the film felt lacking. But that's just how I feel, I know I'm in the minority on this one.

I actually LIKED the anxiety attack scene a lot because my wife even said she goes through it.
She naturally understood what was going on but also she liked how it was done in a way where kids can understand that you can’t just live off one emotion. Just like in the first one.
Trying to be happy all the time leads down a dark path. In this one, always pushing yourself isn’t good because then you’ll be stuck.
Kids won’t see it how intense we adults see it.
Plus at the end they show that keepy your anxiety under control is a good thing. It isn’t bad. Just use it correctly.😊
This scene was to me a top tier scene because me as someone who doesn’t go through this… can now picture how crazy it can be…

The only thing I completely agree with in this video, is the fact that I felt too like they didn't know what to do with the first set of emotions💀like their journey to consciousness and all was kinda unneccessary and I felt like it was a filler for the rest of the film. I know they're suppressed emotions and all but they kinda didn't have any agency in Riley's mind while that is not the case in adolescence. I feel like they could have handled this better, but other than that, it still was a very accurate depiction of the emotional complexities of puberty, especially anxiety's role who is the one who takes control in opposition to joy, which after all, are the main reasons we keep going as they keep us motivated for different reasons.
The conflict would have been better as an internal conflict between the original emotions.

Inside out 2 is pretty much a copy and paste of the first one, anxiety acts the same way joy does, thinking she is the most important emotion and suppressing another ones. I expected the movie to introduce new ideas, what isn't really done. Also, at times it feels like there is too much going on, but nothing going on at the same time. I will give some credit because it really is refreshing having a movie in 2024 that is not full of agendas and certain themes. Overall the movie isn't bad, is just ok.
Personally, I Freaking Loved This Movie!!! As a Teenager, It was exactly the kind of Movie I needed right now and I connected to it So Much It was just So incredibly Relatable. In My Opinion, This Movie Perfectly Captures what it's like to be a Teenager. All of The New Emotions were Fantastic! Anxiety in particular was Such a Fantastic Character! As someone who Definitely Struggles with Anxiety, It was Such a Perfect Depiction of what Anxiety is and what it does to You. And all Of The Old Emotions were Great as Well! This Movie was just Absolutely Phenomenal!!! One Of The Best Pixar Movies Ever In My Opinion!!!
I agree with your overall take, but I kinda disagree with your points. I don't think that the movie was all that uncreative in any way, and I personally found the humor to be not as good as the original.
I made a post on Reddit that detailed my issues with the movie's plot, but to summarize, I think that the pacing is what kills the movie for me. It's too frantic, and makes it so that there isn't much focus on the main characters of the movie.

Yeah, I guess Inside Out 2 is a dud. I mean, I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I don't have enough sophisticated thoughts to argue your points, so I guess you're right. I really wanted to just enjoy this film, but objectively, I feel like I shouldn't after watching this video.
Oh my god NO! You absolutely should enjoy the film. I'm just one a**hole with an opinion haha. It's not the right opinion, it's just how I felt walking out of the film. Even my gf was like "no way, you're wrong" haha. I'm very much in the minority here. You should 100% continue loving and enjoying it if that's how you feel. Film is subjective! If you love enjoyed it, that's all that matters.

I heavily disagree. I respect your opinion, but the message of the movie resonated with me very much. It's possible the only reason is that I'm a teen, but I loved the concept of not trying to center yourself about only one perspective. Accepting all parts of your self, good and bad. Yes, lately all modern studios are failing more often, but it shouldn't make us blind for the good things that happen.

I’m sorry, but I swear every video criticizing Pixar now feels like it just boils down to, “Pixar was good, now they’re safe, Disney plus has damaged the brand” and it’s getting old. Especially considering that their brand had bounced back with elemental and inside out 2. Plus, being on Disney plus didn’t stop Soul from being universally loved, or Luca/turning red from being big hits that connected with many people. Ironic this video criticized Pixar for playing it safe, when this is the safest type of discussion you could create in a video about Pixar nowadays.

I strongly disagree I think it has to do with cultural trends and Hollywood wanting only neurotypicals to write movies. The whole studios playing at save thing is more like cruise control. There's an adjective that you write what you know. Being that neurotypicals tend to beer on the side of social norms and social trends, this is more what you are seeing. What people are saying is that Pixar lost its new car smell
@@conradaster3764 Most of the staff they laid off were part of the Disney plus division, they aren’t going to focus on projects for the service instead focusing on theatrical releases. Besides, even if you wanted to say they were in trouble before, it was because they weren’t making money from having their films on a streaming service, something that has changed with their two recent movies as I mentioned. Also, they were never going to close down, that’s objectively false, you probably just heard it from a rumor. Honestly, the fact that the person who made this video liked your comment is kind of sad, it tells me all I need to know about their view on my points.
I always appreciate your voice but honestly, I loved the film. Anxiety made me feel a little too seen and that finale hit me like the best of Pixar's golden age. I respect that it justified its existence.

Inside out 2 explores incredibly engaging and imaginative concepts; its biggest flaw, besides following closely the overall narrative structure of the first, is that it feels rushed. If the movie had been longer, if Riley’s puberty had been explored before going to the camp instead of cramping up into one scene where she screams to her mom, the movie would be perfect
ppl address rehash narrative structure like isn't bad thing when PIXAR sequels have been safe & newish since Finding Dory made it 1billion in box office. My point being made PIXAR is still not confident making different sequel (plot) or trilogy despite praise they're currently getting.

@Alucard2091 just google brainstorm. It's very common for people to comedically depict a brainstorm as like an actual storm happening in the brain in a cartoonish drawing. I saw this kinda happen in an episode of Wander Over Yonder as well.

I saw a lot of comments saying the film is really good and although I respect those opinions. I just didn’t really like inside out 2, it felt like a copy of the first film for me. 🤷
It’s got similar story beats, but it also feels different from the first film. And it puts the characters in unique situations that made for fun interactions that weren’t in the original
The safe film would've been 90 mins of the short where she goes on a date with a boy. They did a lot with this film that was surprisingly refreshing. The contrast of her mom's emotions having sadness as the lead was nice. Or that the adults tended to have the same personality for all their emotions.
While I appreciate the intelligent and well thought out criticism, I disagree wholeheartedly. This movie wrecked me and my wife and my kids loved it. As someone who never dealt with Anxiety but suddenly the last few years it seems to always be there. I am glad audiences and the box office seem to have a way better opinion of this excellent and emotional film.
Honestly this film gives a voice for those who suffer from anxiety and other disorders that involve anxiety being a key feature. As someone who suffers from C-PTSD this was a conversation started towards those who denied or never truly understood what I was enduring. Instead of criticizing maybe start seeing all that is translated what words could never accomplish
I fully acknowledge that anxiety was depicted very well in the film. My problems with the film wasn't Anxiety as a character and how it was treated...it was most everything else. I agree the film has significance and importance for its representation and as someone who also suffers from anxiety, it was great to see. I just think as a film, it fell short in a lot of ways.

I disagree with your take on this film, but I do respect your opinion. "Inside Out 2" perfectly represents how anxiety I have never related to the film as much as "Inside Out 2". Growing up was scary, and I was incredibly anxious about my future. The final scene was perfect.

I mean I literally don't say if it's the worst or the best or garbage, I just say it has a huge problem and proceed to explain what that problem is and how it negatively impacted my enjoyment of the film. I even say in the video I think the movie is merely fine.

It wasn't different it's an inferior and almost complete copy and paste of the first film plot wise just with less risks on the table
Tbh, I don’t completely love this movie but I really liked it a lot. The plot can be too fast paced and they reused the same story template that the first movie has, but I still really enjoyed it because of how insightful it is.

Honestly, this film was very mid. I agree that there was so much more creative potential, and that I didn’t think it should’ve been made in the first place. Based on the ending of the first film (combining emotions) and the fact that there were never any of the new emotions in the adults, they clearly never planned for a sequel, and it makes this so jarring.
Not to mention how much is copied in terms of plot beats. The scene of joy holding the memories and crying, all I could think of is how much better this type of realization scene was in the first movie. It’s really unfortunate. Again, this movie is mid, so it in no way ruins the franchise or anything, but I was just bored most of the time. Like you said, it really didn’t hit as hard. At all.

I liked the film, but I actually agree with your criticisms. I think having the existing emotions develop would have been more sucinct. I saw the potential for that when the OG emotions tried to touch the panel after the demolition crew came in; they touched the panel as before, but the effect it created was much BIGGER. Having to cope with the restricting of Riley's brain could have been interesting. And fear could have developed the characteristics they ended up giving to Anxiety. Anyways, I still enjoyed the movie, but perhaps it could have been even better with your suggestions.

This was a really good video essay. I want to say, I agree that the emotional impact didn’t hit quite as hard in the sequel: it was definitely THERE, it's just not comparable. I also agree that the new emotions just kind of showing up doesn’t make for as interesting a mindscape, or perhaps as accurate of one.
However, I disagree with your point about Pixar as a whole, and I wouldn't go so far as to call this movie "safe", either. Actually, I think there are things in this sequel that deserve to be talked about more, and they could be just as impactful as any other pixar sequel. Aside from Toy Story, their sequels have never been quite as powerful, but have always been worthwhile, and I think that's the case here.
Pixar is still really strong in their storytelling capabilities, and Inside Out 2 was a really warm and delightful addition to their roster. Not everything works for them (I'm looking at you, Cars 2), but I'm not worried about future projects.

I think it's important to consider that the creators made inside out 1 as a prequel. The original idea was always to do a movie about adolescense, but there was way to much information to cover, so a first movie was necesary. Also, as a psychologist, I strongly disagree, this is not a movie inventing a way to continue a story, this is how emotins work. If they had created the magical world you're proposing, they would've gone too far off from the theoric grounds of the movie. This is an educational movie. It is ok if it didn't move you, but I recommend analizing why it didn't, what has been your experience with emotions, what have you been taught, why it didn't move you, why it moves mainly the female audience... let's embrace the oportunity to learn about our personal emotions.
Now i know i might sound crazy but i never considered inside out to be one of my favourite Pixar movies. The reason being that i just don't think that the concept of characters that represent an emotion just didn't speak to me that well but that's not to say i hate the movie no, i think it's a solid 8/10, but my actual favorite Pixar movie is CARS from 2006. It might be because i watched that movie many times as i was younger but the true reason is that the message of that movie i just find more relatable than just emotions that are characters. The message of CARS is Simple:slow down and enjoy the simple things in life. That to me is a lot more powerful and relatable than insode out. Now I haven't seen inside out 2 but i honestly knew that the movie would be a huge success and that it would be loved. But the point I'm trying to make is that i just am not as found for inside out as so many other people are. Great cideo by the way griffin keep up the great content ❤.
I personally quite liked the movie and felt it was a good continuation of the first movie. With how it gave more interesting elements for Riley’s character as well as how they wrote anxiety with the fundamental problems of her kind of thinking and how we see her change from her perspective I quite liked. Also the climatic conclusion with panic attack was quite good as well also while the movie rehashes fair share of elements from the first movie I think the new elements they add to the world with it’s concepts and how they wrote Riley. Makes it to be able to stand on it’s own and not feeling to much of the same.
I'm not surprised they are making Toy Story 5.

I think Pixar would just continue with squeals if this film did poorly. Thank goodness it didn’t. Pixar could probably do more original films now, well at least until they do another squeal.
I saw this movie in theaters with a bunch of my family (like 8 of us), and I was honestly shocked at their reactions because almost all of them said they liked it more than the first one. Judging by the few comments I've read on this video, it seems most people agree that this movie was as impactful or even more impactful than the first one. As someone who deals with extreme anxiety that seems to only be getting worse, though I related to the movie and saw what it was going for, it still didn't hit as hard as the first one and did seem to either repeat old story beats or add new things that kind of contradicted the first film (small things like how memories now can either form a belief or go to long term, not both). Don't get me wrong, I cried, it was a great movie and I loved it, I just didn't love it as much as the first and was surprised that wasn't the general consensus since I tend to be the one giving movies the benefit of the doubt. There were certain things I thought were brilliant, like anxiety taking over imagination land, but ultimately I felt like it had a lot of unexplored potential. Plus it kinda chalked up panic attacks as something that has an easy solution and likely won't happen again, which of course neither of those things are true in reality.
Idk, maybe I'm missing something everyone else sees, but as someone who theoretically should find this movie extra relatable, I was surprised it didn't quite hit the mark for me.
Again, that's only because my expectations were set exceedingly high by the first movie. I still love this film and will rewatch it many times and cry every time I'm sure.
Inside Out 2 was good for the studio. They needed a guaranteed hit that would bring in cash and good reviews.
My mom likes Disney and Pixar, but she isnt one to run out to theaters. Except for this movie. She's only seen Inside Out once, but was weirdly excited for it's sequel. She was looking for Anxiety keychains BEFORE we even saw the movie!
I thought the first Inside Out was ok. I didn't really have expectations for Inside Out 2, but it's so much better than the first one. I want more Inside Out movies.
I honestly also got hit hard by Inside Out 2. Loved the ending
In my opinion the second movie was fine . I’m not saying it was bad , but I agree with almost all your points . And as a female in here teenage years I didn’t like how my anxiety was reminded to me. Finally in the first movie when you zoom in to anyones head it would only show the main 5 😒
Lets not mention the major inconsistency that none of these other emotions existed in her parents heads in the first movie lol, they should have thought ahead.
Well in a scene during the credits, a version of Anxiety came into the parents' brain, but the main five emotions handled it much more calmly. It's implied that since they've grown, the emotions that were so prevalent in their teenage years were managed and under control- almost like they're in the back of the mind, not that they just don't exist.

The addition of new emotions doesn't help end-credits of 1st movie where it showcases all various of ppl age & animals, only consist of 5 emotions.
I'd have to see the film again, but I very much disagree with most of this. Granted that studio exec is worrisome, definitely. However, I don't feel like Inside Out 2 was a failure, certainly not akin to Lightyear, no Lightyear was safe and awful beyond awful with a clear trope checklist mandated by the corporation. Inside Out 2 felt like the kind of story I want from Pixar, and I think it was a perfectly fine movie. Would it have been interesting to see Disgust maybe be overcome by a new sensation within herself that led to Envy or Embarrassment or something, sure, but I think they work fine as individual characters, and seeing the whole Steven Universe footage pop up made me think that idea was a bit more derivative. Granted, there is something to the idea of emotions evolving and branching to have multiple traits, but I'm not so sure that Inside Out really set itself up for that, especially seeing that memories are formed from the combination of multiple emotions that feed into Riley's character. That seems to be where the combination and branching manifest more than within the emotions.
Also, treating the emotions as emotions is kinda the point, and I think balancing them as their own characters while still being the embodiment of specific emotions is a challenge I feel they nailed. Yeah, world building wise, is it weird to see any of them express multiple emotions outside their own? Yeah, but I feel like that's overthinking things. Likewise, I feel that burdening them too many emotions would over complicate the story they did tell. There's a way to do that I'm sure, but what I hear is more that Inside Out 2 didn't fit what you would've done. And hey, that's fine, but I think you're being overly harsh on this one.
I left the theater feeling perfectly content with Inside Out 2. In fact, I feel it was honestly perfect, and I didn't expect to feel that way. Honestly, I never trust anything Disney post Endgame and post The Owl House cancellation. I was sure I'd walk away thinking it was fun and alright, but I was prepared to have my own gripes, and yet I left the theater without any.
Now, I don't want Pixar to only focus on sequels or give up trying original ideas, but this sequel was legitimately fine. I guess it was "safe" in the way this one didn't queer bait the way Disney normally forces them to (cough, Lightyear, cough), but I think it still brought a lot of good conflict to the forefront, especially with just how bad anxiety can be for someone, and what their innermost fears can force them to do when they give into their worst fears and emotions. I think it told that story just fine. Am I still worried about Disney and Pixar as companies? Absolutely, but this movie? Nah, this movie was everything it needed to be and did everything I think it could, or at least everything the creative team could reasonably fit into it. I don't see a checklist with this one. It feels like an organic story driven by the characters and that's what I want. Something good. Not everything has to try push every boundary it possibly can. Sometimes, it just needs to tell a perfectly good story and that's what this did.
Now, I would love to see Pixar and everyone, any animation team push boundaries, but I'll settle for good, organic stories which is something many studios seem to be missing nowadays with rare hits like this and Deadpool and Wolverine in between... when other potential films aren't cancelled for tax write offs.
Honestly, this review just felt too pessimistic on what could've been according to one imagination, instead of a critique on how well the movie did with what it presented.
Nothing personal, but I just don't see whatever flaws you do, and what flaws you point out seem to stem more from the fact that this differed from your imagination, and not anything the film legitimately failed in writing and execution. And it's fine to have your opinion and ideas, I just don't see how those reflect on the movie, and I don't see where the movie went wrong by itself.
I mean, The Acolyte failed basic math and its own philosophy in the same scene at the same time.
Where did Inside Out 2 actually fail its own premise?
Lightyear had its big queer kiss take place way off to the side and then promptly buried its gays, and the lesbian kiss was a selling point!
Speaking of queer bait: The Acolyte, "the gayest Star Wars," had a lot of heterosexual thirsting in it, and also buried its gays in the witches, but unlike Lightyear, they were shown to have no affection for each other, just them arguing about how to raise the twins and even kinda bullying one before they got axed. Oh yeah, and that's also supposed to be motivation for the main character, so let's add fridging to the list of that and Lightyear.
Also, they failed Buzz on a character note just by changing his catchphrase to some weird two part thing he needed a friend to complete, and that was stupid because it was a shallow attempt to force Buzz to bond with one character that got killed off and her replacement that was just her daughter, which was just her without knowing Buzz, and then she basically is forced to replace her mother instead of carving out her own identity as Buzz basically forces the catchphrase on her! AHH! I hate that movie even more now because it's so clearly rejecting the idea of moving forward through strife and grief and just forces the past onto the present... AAAAAHHHHH!!!! Okay, I'm cool. I'm fine. Moving on...
Where did Inside Out 2 fail its own characters? I mean, yeah not every single emotion get to shine on their own, but they all still band together. The only thing I can say is that yeah, certain emotions were not the focus because the main problem was Anxiety and that's where we needed to focus. It's kinda like how not every X-Man in X-Men takes the spotlight in every story. Having a character centric narrative isn't a problem, and that does usually mean that other characters won't be as focused on, and to me this story just focused on those it needed to while acknowledging the others which a lot of stories do. I mean, not every Power Ranger is literally the heart of every episode. Not every member of the Justice League has to be there for every single threat. Every emotion was present, and while not all of them got some big, show stealing moment, they didn't need to, and I feel the story is better, perfect as it is, for that. I mean, even the opening episodes of Justice League (The 2000s cartoon) didn't fill us all in on every one of their backstories. They just brought together Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Hawkgirl, Green Lantern, The Flash, and Martian Manhunter, and not many of them get much explanation in that 3 part debut. It just kinda happened and it did well despite not everyone tuning in knew who everyone was, and certainly some characters were more effective than other, more focused on than others. Ditto that for the 90s X-Men series. However, in none of those are any characters forced to become something or someone they aren't AND they all get to stick around to effect the plot, characters and audience. Sure, Inside Out 2 can't make everyone shine in the spotlight, but it still uses them all well enough without compromising who any of them are.
So yeah, say what you will, think what you do, but Inside Out 2 was far better than I feel this video essay gives it credit.
I respect that you have your own opinion and that this film did not meet your expectations. I just can't share it, nor really do I understand where you're coming from outside the fear of the execs and their dumb plans. Honestly, the videos here have been downers for me lately too, especially because your critiques on past Deadpool entries and this seem to stem more from ideas you have about what they should be or what would fit your taste, and not so much how well they did themselves as they are.

Hey man loved the video, and I honestly feel seen because I also thought the movie was just alright. I'm big fan of the first one, and nothing in the second movie hit me as hard as Bing Bong kicking the bucket. The movie just felt painfully safe, and I really don't think it's exactly blazing a trail for discussion about anxiety. We live in a world where a god damn Paw Patrol movie has a panic attack scene. If Rain Man came out today, we wouldn't be praising it for pushing the needle on autism discourse, so why does Inside Out 2 get a pass.
I hate rooting for any movie to fail but man I was hoping this movie would flounder at least. It's nothing against it.

I liked it. I do kinda wish it took place over a longer stretch of time than 3 days but I get that they wanted to create some urgency. It dealt with some really heavy topics successfuly. It's hard to explain complicated things to kids and I thought it did a great job exploring the fear of the unknown, identity, personal integrity, survival instincts, peer pressure, shame, insecurity, etc. and I appreciate it.
It's more for middle schoolers and up so might be a little less magical but still well done.

I think it's because she would've produced gray memories, which were established in the last film to be forgotten memories.
Edit: believe it or not, in the concept art for the movie, there was supposed to be a 10th emotion with a gray color palette named Shame, which ultimately got cut due to making the original story way too convoluted. Her emotion was also not considered more reactionary and external, and served a purpose that was too similar to sadness and embarrassment combined.

The movie has become what every Pixar sequel has been for the past few years. A money printing project relying on its name. The protagonist learned the same exact lesson of the first one. Well executed, but completely unnecessary.

Okay, something I think people are completely forgetting is that this film is NOT about mental illness. People hear "anxiety" and they thing generalized anxiety disorder, but that's not what the film is about AT ALL. People keep saying it's not actually safe because it touches on all these subjects that are considered taboo in mainstream media, but it really doesn't. It doesn't ever even say the words panic attack. This movie is not about GAD or panic disorder any mental illness, it is about the surfacing of the emotion even the most mentally healthy people experience. It's a very relatable movie, but it's getting people to defend it as revolutionary without actually having to break any rules.
Edit: this isn't to discount anyone with or without mental illness who's been emotionally impacted by this movie. Though I felt it had more potential, it still hit hard enough that I cried.
To me the film was really good. I could relate to it on a personal level and I felt so understood. Maybe we should embrace the new things from time to time and think of them whith less nostalgia for our childhoods bc our childhoods are long gone and this is meant to be for a new generation of children that have their own identity. And if it is enjoyable for adults thats good too but we aren't the taget demographic anymore and that is ok

It does NOT play it safe, what the hell are you talking about. The way they portray anxiety was near perfection. Also of course it's going to have the same shelves of memories....it's the same place. They aren't about to just change the entire layout of the mind lmao. But they STILL managed to keep it interesting, having different things happening and going to new places etc.

My only criticism of the film is that I think they added too many emotions at once (Anxiety and Embarrassment are the only two that have any real agency in the story, the rest were kinda just for laughs). My other one is simply that I wish it was longer, but that's more about me just wanting more of the film because I love it so much hahaha, not really even a criticism.
But this is honestly pretty minor, and the jokes from the other emotions were very funny so it doesn't really matter tbh. It does also give them a good amount of characters that have already been introduced for the 3rd film, I actually think this could be why SOO many were added.

I honsetly can't agree with this. in my opinion, this film exceeded my expectations and just takes what the first film had established and expands upon it. If you look into it, this film gets even deeper emotinally than its predessor. This is how you do a sequel right imo.

i didn't seen as many problems in this movie as you said, it was good and made me almost shed a tear in the finale. For me the real problem is that i felt like it was very short and it didn't talk about puberty but only a very little period of it. The first was much more dramatic and if you represent childhood in such a good way you expect that in second should have been more emotional, because the teeneage era is a difficult (if not for some the most difficult) phase in the life of a human being. it felt like a part of a movie, said what they wanted to say but nothing else, i hope with the success of the second a third that explores more deeply the mind of a teenager.
I think a lot of what you're saying is why I feel like Riley should've been 16 in this film. Significant time jump and she's going through teenage angst, woes, emotional turbulence, but she's older, and so they're able to incorporate a bit of the gravity you feel as a teen. Idk...it just took the safest, least interesting route with all of these ideas, despite Anxiety being a powerful element at play.

I think there are entirely different levels of expectations when it comes to a Pixar movie compared to Venom 3. Also, the problem with Inside Out 2 was an overall lack of creative expression. Outside of the panic attack and Anxiety, elements of the film I genuinely found compelling, it was retreading the first film.

I disagree with this take and these conclusions. It all worked. It told a great story, and was insightful and moving. They skipped developing what should've been skipped; it was better to not expand the internal world, beyond adding the characters they did. I saw this with my 10 and 15 year old kids and my son had an anxiety attack since that mirrored what happened in the film, and it helped him see what was playing out (later, of course).
I found the first one interminably trite. So I have no interest in the sequel.

It seems that a lot of people seems to love this movie and it hit the box office. And while it is understandable, I don't think people will remember nor talk this movie fondly in the next 5 -10 years. While the story is amazing, the animation is some what average for Pixar 3D animation.

I mean I really don't care about a movie's financial performance. The Transformers movies made billions of dollars at the box office and are pretty bad for the most part. The story was always about joy understanding that you need both good memories and bad memories to be a balanced human being. It's similar in the second movie just now it's also about anxiety realising the same thing. I think you need to see it again with a more open mind.

@@Alucard2091 So I want to point out you said character regression. In finding Dory Marlon brings Nemo along. That shows that his character arc from the end of the first movie where he thought Nemo couldn't do things and then learns that Nemo is capable. That arc is intact. And it is an important one because for me it is necessary to show people that may be able-bodied that people who are not still have value People who may have some sort of deformity still has value in society. If anything finding Nemo is a rip off of Rudolph the Red-Nosed reindeer and that may be just my take on it but that is the core lesson that we learn from the perspective of an overprotective parent. And that's like the mildest version of ableism too a well-meaning parent who wants to protect their kid from the world's judgment and difficulties That's not present in finding Dory. The story of Dory is finding and forgiving your family over misunderstandings. It's about your parents not being perfect people

I feel like this is a very cynical approach to the film. Yeah it’s a bit of a retread but I think the themes conveyed are boundary-pushing and engaging. And I thought the story was engaging and entertaining, and it wasn’t just Joy and the gang running through barren setpieces
That's fair, and I can't really disagree that it had elements that worked. It was merely fine to me. Enjoyable, but largely the typical sequel problem.
The themes it conveys have been done before and done well before many times in the past. It's not boundary-pushing at all.

The problem is this is more or less the first film, just with new emotions. There's great stuff in it, but it's eclipsed by the safeness of the sequel as a whole.
