Honestly a modern forged small sword with something like a basket hilt on it (for knife /machete defense) could be a pretty good self/home defense weapon with some practice… probably pricey to have made tho

Of cource he's out of the line.
The line is where his servants stand, waiting for his order to fire.
Off the X or out of line for a thrust is a good tactic. Don't stay in line so your opponent can pierce you. Get off the line and thrust him first. After all it's all geometry.
A very gentlemanly sword indeed. However I must say the old swept hilts are absolutely lovely and make excellent decorations in the library.
Of course a proper library should be adorned with any manner of curious weapons from savage and far-off times and places, as well as the hides of beasts of all kinds.
