    I don't have kids myself but I think that I would have done the same thing in this type of situation. Zach was probably 17 years old and had a whole life ahead of him. It's sad but it's the cold, hard truth that a person could injure or kill themselves or other people just for wanting to have a few drinks. I think that this episode gave an excellent example of telling young people don't drink and drive

    Derek Morris was outraged & rightfully so. You gotta get the message across loud & clear drunk driving is a problem that many of us have done & today especially with Uber, Lift & other ways to get home it should happen less & less me I was born vision issues that don't allow me to drive. So I'm use to having to get rides to go places.

      I think that what Derek was MOST UPSET about was the fact that Zack LIED to him about the accident. I think that is what REALLY BOTHERED Derek MORE than ANYTHING ELSE. Derek was angry about the drinking, but I think that he was even more heart-broken that Zack LIED about it. It's the fact that Zack did NOT tell the truth about what really happened. LYING is what really angers parents MORE than what actually happened. It shows a lack of maturity and a serious breach of trust. If Zack had just been honest about it, I SERIOUSLY think that Derek would NOT have been so tough on him. I REALLY believe that.

    •  Месяц назад

      @@Snake-bj2gl Indeed, drinking before you're 21 and DUI aren't such a big deal...so long as you tell the whole truth and nothing more, like George Washington with his dad's cherry tree. Never mind that either of those things will get you arrested and jailed, whether you're honest or not.
      My only real complaint is about this scene being at the episode's END, rather than late in the first act or early in the second...just because then it would have told us something we might not already know. People, this is a 30-minute show; if we have not established within the first 29 that underage drinking -- not to mention driving while intoxicated -- should be avoided at all costs, then Houston, we have a very serious problem.

    • @charlespeakjr2168
      @charlespeakjr2168 27 дней назад +1

      Drinking under the age of 21, as well as DUI/DWI is ALWAYS A BIG DEAL!!!!
      The writers really could have hit the episode's point home a lot further if one of the students, or even one of the major characters, were either hurt or killed by Zack's actions.

    •  27 дней назад

      @@charlespeakjr2168 Or even just by doing this...
      ...Derek hands Zack another cell phone so he can report himself to the cops -- after briefly expressing disappointment that Zack gave away the other cell phone, which was Derek's present to him. Zack does so, promising to wait right there until the police come for him. Then he wakes up...
      ...Back at Lisa's Homecoming bash. It was all a nightmare! Then Ox brings in that cooler filled with beers, and Zack yells at him to get it out of there. This causes all the other partygoers to turn and stare at Zack, who proceeds to lecture the jocks about how underage drinking -- especially without a designated driver -- is dumb and dangerous in equal measure; he really does Al Gore proud in the process, as you might imagine. When Zack is labeled a party-pooper for this and asked to leave, he does...after mentioning that he'll be sure to call the cops, in case somebody needs a ride home. No sooner does Zack split than his words sink in: Ox, who still has his receipt for the beer, takes it away; Lisa goes to check if she's got any prune juice for her guests. Outside, Zack whips out his cell phone and calls his dad to say everything's fine; he's coming home early and, since it's such a beautiful evening, he'll walk home. Zack strolls off down the moonlit street, punching the air triumphantly (a la Edward James Olmos at the end of "Stand & Deliver").
      Thoughts, anyone?

    •  27 дней назад +1

      Even taking the keys for five months is much too lenient for what Zack and his friends did. A really good parent would have destroyed Zack's driver-license and then reported said incident to the cops...or had Zack do it himself: "Son, for your own good -- as well as the *common* good -- I'm going to have you arrested and locked up, along with those of your friends who were also drinking...since the worst thing that can happen to you in prison is being hassled by the inmates and/or guards. Believe me, *anything's* better than dying from alcohol-poisoning, or in an alcohol-related car crash."

    Derek Morris, give me a break. 2 weeks and no car for a while. This is what you should have said, ““Sorry doesn’t cover it Zack. You got behind the wheel of a vehicle, knowing you had been drinking. You had an accident that damaged Mrs. Turtle’s car, injured your best friend Slater, and then you persuaded your other friend, Lisa to be the fall person, take the blame for the accident, and lie to her mother. You endangered yourself, your friends, pedestrians, and other motorists. Sorry doesn’t cover that. Sorry doesn’t cover that because of you, Slater, the football captain, has to watch his last high school homecoming game from the sideline, if he even gets to go to the game; because of you, Lisa, the homecoming queen, is going to miss her last high school homecoming. Instead of a weekend of celebration, she is going to spend her weekend getting fussed out. Instead of getting recognized at the game, she’s going to be punished. Sorry doesn’t cover the fact that you persuaded your friends to engage in an exhausting web of lies and deceit to try save your neck, a web of deception they are in trouble for. I can’t believe that you would be so selfish, irresponsible, and wreckless. So let’s see. You had 3 passengers in your care, Slater, Lisa, and Screech. 3 cubed is 9. So, you are grounded for 9 weeks, 3 weeks for every person in your care, and you are not to drive any vehicle for 9 months, 3 months for every person in your care. No exceptions for any dates, concerts, dances, jamborees, etc. And when the grounding is over, you will pay Mrs. Turtle for the damage to her car. Hand me the keys.”

      Amen! You nailed it friend. Too bad what you wrote wasn't part of the script and it really should have been. Something else that comes to mind is that Lisa was most likely disqualified for being Homecoming Queen. Lisa's mother should have even said "You may as well forget about Homecoming because this weekend you'll be home staying! Consider yourself disqualified!"

    A better title for this episode would have been BEERGATE -- taken from "Watergate" -- since the message is that it's okay to drink (underage), drive, and total your friend's car...so long as you're honest about it.
    Just for lying -- and also for hocking the cell phone his dad gave him -- here's what should have happened to Zack:
    1) Derek sells Zack's car and uses the money to finish repairing Judy Turtle's;
    2) Derek shreds his son's driver's license and throws that in the garbage;
    3) Derek has his son arrested for DUI and underage drinking. Either that or he demands that Zack call the cops and report himself ("...Yes, Officer; I'll be waiting right here"), after which the end credits roll over Zack's mug shot.
    Hey, after everything else Zack has been through -- none of it good, mind you -- a stretch in jail shouldn't be hard to take, right?
