According to a tweet Onision made, he hadn't read a single book cover to cover in 14 years before writing this book. And honestly? It shows.
Also, I do no understand how you don't have more subs. I've been subbed for a couple of months now, and this is by far the best review channel I've seen if you want something other than outrage or dunking on books. Which I also watch, because it's amusing, but that is more like fast food while this channel is fine dining.

I’m sick as a dog & really glad to see this!
Edit: according to his autobiography, the girl in the book was a real high schooler he knew. I’ve watched the Strange Aeons video on that book. Greg RUclips apparently hates her.

      Get well soon!
Yeah, the entire episode could have been a biographical critique of the book. I love how certain characters are (by Greg RUclips’s own admission) based off of real people and how obvious it is where fact ends and fiction begins

You all abstracting Plato's Allegory of the Cave reminds me of my wife and I turning the Ship of Theseus into a meme, it divolves in meaning every time 🤣

If every part of the Ship of Theseus allegory is changed, is it even the same allegory anymore?

Onision's next book should be an isekai light novel with Davis as the main character.

I like to imagine that for the cover image, Onision was out on a walk one day, grabbed some random girl and said "just curl up in the fetal position next to that rock wall and look sad. I'll give you royalties from my book."

oh hell yeah new english club video! i used to watch onision a lot as a teenager, back when he and cyr made videos together. looking back, there were so many red flags in his content that just flew over my head, but now it's not surprising at all how he turned out to be.
i think this is the hardest book yet to give a genuine critique to. like you guys said, it's hard to tell what the vision was, if onision knew what he wanted to say with this story. honestly, i feel like it was either a cash grab or an ego-driven, self-serving whim. probably both. i can't imagine this story's core goes any deeper than "i'm a hero and better than everyone else," which is kind of sad, but very telling.
i liked how you brought up self-victimizing, i think that's the perfect word for all of this. even when there is an interesting story happening in the book, onision is only interested in how he as the protagonist is affected by it it. he seems completely uninterested in perspectives that aren't his, or that don't center him (the funeral... yikes), and i think that's such a pity! i think everyone has interesting things to say and stories to tell if you just learn to listen, but that seems completely out of this guy's ballpark.
anyway, it was great seeing what you guys thought, and i really enjoyed holly's presence, she was a great addition to this discussion! looking forward to the next one!

      Glad you enjoyed it!
Yeah, I didn’t know anything about onision before the books came to my attention. The “why” is probably some combination of everything you suggested-there’s just BARELY enough cogency to the idea of “good, bad, and neutral self” books that I think some genuine desire to make art went into it. But Greg is incapable of not being Greg

Fun fact: Onision used to be my favorite RUclipsr, because I liked offensive humor. The beginning of that opinion changing was when I saw his reaction to criticism on this book. And I learned more about why the guy sucks after that, and now I hate the guy lol

"Stones To Abbigale is not just a book I wrote; it is a piece of who I am."
THIS WAS A WARNING; EVEN IF THE AUTHOR LACKED THE SELF-AWARENESS TO REALIZE IT.

  • @ninavale.

I've seen some reviews of his auto-biography and he had indeed written a letter like this to a girl in his class. Only, she did not meet him and become his forever girlfriend like Abbi. She had the normal human reaction of being freaked out by it and never spoke to him. So he wrote a wish-fulfillment fan-fiction about how he wanted this to go. Yes, this man is pushing 40 and he is still bitter and cannot get over girls he had crush on when he was in highschool. Heck, he remembers crushes and is bitter about girls who broke up with him WHEN HE WAS 11. Like, he actually expected to seriously date and then have kids(as adults) with a girl he met when he was 11.

For author who are not good at taking in criticism, when they and people they know are the characters in their book, it would feel very much like a personal attack so i can understand being defensive. But "you are just shallow" or " you don't understand me" is too much of an easy way out. If you are unable to convey the message/certain event in the book to your reader, most of the time, the book is not as perfect as your imagination.
Especially if you think your idea is not the normal norm or
unconventional for the mass, tbh i think that should require more creative work to be put in.
