The paintings of Stefan Baumann reveal the true spirit of nature by transporting the viewer to distant lands that have gone unseen and undisturbed. With the huge success of Baumann’s weekly PBS television series “The Grand View: America’s National Parks through the Eyes of an Artist,” millions of people witness for themselves the magic Stefan portrays on canvas, his passion for nature and the American landscape. By distilling his love of nature into a luminous painting of brilliant, saturated color that transcends conventional landscape and wildlife art, Baumann has captured the hearts and imaginations of a generation. Each painting becomes an experience rather than merely a picture - a vivid manifestation of his special and personal union with nature and the outdoor world. Through his mastery of light, color and artful composition, Baumann invites you to experience nature in its purity. It is no wonder that for many years distinguished American collectors, including former presidents and financial icons, have sought out his work.

Thank you for sharing. Always good takeaways. The takeaway for me was the techniques on how to control the eye of the viewer on the painting when bringing lines off the canvas.

I learned something. Thanks! I am still working on changing the direction of the light and the focal point. Your comment about Schmid and edges was a real eye opener while looking at the painting on display.

Very interesting analysis of what is interesting in an image
Every Abstract- realistic shape = forms of light and shadow - open to experiences and if it is interesting we get curious and looks more and experiences begin to deepen, develop and open - and personally I am very interested in the vibrational quality and the play of edges and defused edges

"What were you thinking"--to me one should better ask: "what was your Intent" or "what feeling you are tuned onto?".
Thinking is something that can be shut in terms to project an unbending intent and assemble a clear feeling. This is magic and it works. Thinking is from the realm of past inventory: thus, from thinking you most often produce recycled past, not new. Thinking is useful about the ploy/method/technical part--but! if the feeling and intent are not powerful, only amateurs would be impressed by purely technically successful pieces.

I was so excited to see a new video. Thank you! BTW, I think you might be a closet abstract painter. ;-)
Interesting that there's something about the act of abstraction in a realistic painting that makes it more dimensional and meaningful. Beautiful contradiction.

That "push pull" contradiction is unavoidable and probably dates back to prehistoric times, but this idea was really popularized by Hans Hoffman in the US. I would bet most art instructors alive today are students of students of students of Hans Hoffman, who was a student of Picasso, who was a student of Cezanne, and so on. I agree with the video here too. The natural tendency of a new artist is to not realize the edge of the paper or canvas is there influencing the composition. The edge of the picture is part of the picture whether you like it or not, and should be included in your thought process. Of course you can break "the rules" and ignore the edges, but educating yourself makes art infinitely more interesting.

Also maybe worth mentioning, I heard about some research showing that young children first see the world as compositions of shapes before they can process those shapes in terms of distinct objects in space with depth and so on. In a way, we need to unlearn what we know about vision in order to see the world as it really is.
