Nah Demonbane is just... different. People just saw 'Lovecraft' and expect it to be Cthulhu mythos Mk II, then get mad when it's not. Demonbane is a Super Robot story that borrow Lovecraft element (just like Shin Mazinger borrowed Greek myth elements). In that regard, it's an entertaining one.
This, basically. Demonbane is all about two genres that violently clash with each other, so one of the two fanbases was going to get mad no matter what. Personally, I don't care much for Lovecraft (I'm better with happier stories) but I love my super robots, and on that Demonbane really delivered. Plus I got an oddly adorable romance as a bonus. (and hilariously over-the-top porn scenes, but that's another story.)
That's not really spoiling him, there's quite a few characters that have a similar number. Including Heroman, which is quite impressive for a robot that can't even emote beyond "frown harder".
Whats wrong with giant robots and lovecraftian monsters melding together? Personally,i wouldn't mind Banpresto making an SRW where the main villains(a subjective term in the Lovecraft community) are inter-dimensional cosmic horrors. Hell,to keep it interesting,have Nyarlathotep be a recurring character that not only hinders,but sometimes helps the main cast throughout the game. And when it comes to killing one of the giant aberrations,it can be a pretty important event. I know Lovecraft fans like they're stories to be horrific,tense and ultimately depressing and giant robot fans tend to like in your face,action packed,kick ass stories(maybe im getting giant robot fans and super robot fans mixed up). Regardless,i think both genre's could blend nicely,if the narrative was handled well.
If any of you have played Daemonsbane (The actual Visual novel) Its a complete utter trash filled with the ordinary cliches and slaps on Lovecraft with bad art inconsistant voice acting. Play things like Dark Corners of the earth for a actual Lovecraft experience.
