@@crispysquidoftheacidcats295 wait, that's an option? I assumed it's a quest reward, not an item in her inventory. @westenev I think it's less about dignity and more about not losing what you stand for, the reason you are fighting to live. because if you lose yourself "for the good of the quest" what's worth living when you have nothing to go back to?
TBF, there is a neutral option that leads to him doing it where you just say the potion would be really useful but you want him to decide. I don't know if that effects the aftermath or not, but I think it was fair if Tav says that, that Tav just didn't realize he would feel like he had to do it. Unfortunately, a lot of people who are SA'd (especially repeatedly) develop hypersexuality as an attempted coping mechanism 😔 sometimes they don't even realize it. They rationalize it that, if they're always saying yes, they can't be assaulted. If there's never a 'no', you 'can't' be retraumatized by your no being ignored. It's terribly sad, and causes a lot of the symptoms he obviously has - low self esteem, depression, and difficulty forming meaningful relationships with others. Oof 😔
The instant he said "I gave you my answer" to Araj, I wasn't physically able to push him into biting her. I hovered over the option, but I felt so icky inside thinking about what that would mean for Astarion. It's been a really long time since a video game has made me care about a character to this extent. I just want to put a warm blanket over the guy and tell him it's gonna be okay 😭
Even though you can save the romance here, which I did at first it felt off to me. Then literally like the next day my Tav got her brain probes by that half-orc and to distract her from realizing she wasn’t loyal pictured lustful images of Astarion (cause I didn’t see a better option) and this was right after he said he didn’t want to thought of as a sex object. Weirdly he still gives approval as a response, but that was like the mail in the coffin to me here, and I loaded a save from a hours back where I just stick to my guts on saying no to the bite. I only did it in the first place after I realized you could not kill the drow and take it from her corpse(assume you can’t pickpocket it either since she has a shop and it’s not for sale). I looked online and mistakenly believed you only got a a scene for biting and that there was nothing for saying no so I also thought I’d make out on content. Anyway I feel better that I reloaded. Now it feels more normal the romance and I discovered new stuff in the tower so win-win.
TBF, feeling those feelings is natural. He just doesn't want to be treated as a sex object. Doesn't mean you aren't allowed to be lusty as long as you respect his boundaries and don't make it his problem.
yesterday I found a way how to both get the potion and him not being angry, etc.. but it's more of an oversight by the devs. I expected there's going to be some sort of backlash but isn't which there should be imo (even though this is less important than getting to know what his scars mean). I would not do this normally (in my standard run I never force him), this was purely testing what's going to happen. you just need to take a long rest immediately as you enter moonrise to trigger the standard confession and only afterwards go to Araj. I chose the less "aggressive" options - 'I'm surprised, I thought you'd jump at this opportunity' and then 'the potion could be useful'.. he disapproved, bit her, but there was no real outburst from him at all. my approval was still exceptional, even his romantic greetings were there.
This actually makes some sense since you likely established an understanding during the confession and so when you told him it's his choice he didn't hold it against you that you wanted the potion, because he felt like he was truly making the choice himself in this case. Just a theory. There could just be some alternate version of the aftermath that doesn't trigger, as the devs said there's actually 'lost content' that they are working on restoring that is due to bugs.
Wait, THAT'S the choice for it to actually work?! Like, I'm glad that there is a way, but why wouldnt it be genuinely seeing your fault in it and apologising from the start? That's so weird
Yeah, the game suddenly segways into the dialogue at the ending of the confession scene you can get even prior to meeting Araj the drow. Starting with the "You can open your mind to him to let him see you care" and then the handholding. I don't think that was previously there if you had forced him to bite Araj? Maybe people had complained that there was no way to have the potion _and_ prevent Astarion from breaking up with Tav if you forced him to bite her for the potion, so Larian added a way to talk him out of the breakup? But honestly I don't think it should be _that_ easy... if a player used Astarion to get the potion despite Astarion's obvious discomfort and loathing of her blood, the player should accept the consequences. And not making him forget what he said just a minute earlier, that you pushed him to do it.
And I wonder what happens if a player already had triggered Astarion's love confession scene with the hug prior to even meeting Araj (because that is possible if you already have very high approval from Astarion in Act 2), but then forced him to drink Araj's blood? Giving the player part of the same scene as a way to wiggle out of the break-up would be weird.
