Great review! I have this same unit and believe I have found a weakness or firmware issue (that I did report to Uni-T and they brushed it off as normal behavior). What I found is that if you are generating a signal at say 14 MHz sine wave at say -30 dBm (50 ohm) and then enable AM MODulation the signal out drops by 6 dB even if the MODulation percentage is at 0% but the display is still showing -30 dBm but the signal is actually now -36 dBm. I have brought this to the attention of several youtoubers who have reviewd this unit but no-one has confirmed this (BAD?) behavior. Can you do a follow up video showing what you get when you simply enable MODulation. Are you also seeing the level drop by 6 dB when you enable modulation?? Thanks!!

MJ, I measured the PN at 10KHz offset on a professional PN test set. The PN at this offset is -134 dB for the UTG962E I measured. Other offsets 100 Hz (-87 dB); 1 kHz (-128 dB); 100 kHz (-133 dB). The reference used was a 10 MHz Morion ultra low PN block. The output level of the UT was set to 0 dBm. I can email you the plots if you want. I have plots for PN, AM noise and ADEV.

Great review. I've had the same unit for about 2 years now. The display reads 30 to 40 hz high. Two quesitons: Is that reasonable to accept since the accuarcy is advertised as +/- 100ppm within 1 year? And, how do you calibrate this device. I see no adjustments for this. Thank you.

You should put that cable on your VNA and see if it really is of reasonably good quality or not. Of course 60Mhz isn't all that difficult for a cable to handle so it probably is just fine.

That knob seems to work better than those on Rigol DG812 and Siglent SDG1032X!

I love your videos.. honest transperant and highlighting things that simply don't hold water, and not trying to push products onto me, but simply let reality stand on its on two feet, and then I can take it for what it is.
and your explaining it in a humble fashion where most people can follow suit and come with constructive feedback if there are certain approaches that ain't valid for a given result.
    big thumps up.
Rigol came out with a new "PRO" entry signal gen line that could be interesting to take a look at... I believe that on paper it got a phase noise at 110dbc/Hz 10K but taken at 20MHz so not apples to apples with specs from 10Mhz, but on paper quite a bit better then the older Signal gen line DGxxx that were 105dBc/hz 10K at 10Mhz.
but this new PRO arb sig-gen line DGxxPRO, should be identical hardware wise up the ranks if you wanna liberate it, if so it could be decent value for a round 300 to 400 bucks. if it can muster 1.25Gsa/s 16bits / 200MHz / 32M at that value..
    3ns rise (on paper)
It will also run on powerbanks, VESA mount etc.. same formfactor as Rigols latest DHOxxx scopes and DMxxx/E 5½ DMMs.
Worth noting in regards to obvious cons.. long bootup time (Android around 1min) and a noisy fan.
at the lower ballpark the FY6900/60 also seems to give a decent amount of bang for the DDS-buck at sub 100.

Now what about working on microcontrollers and stuff?? I need safe limits of 0V and 3.3V. Will those limits be respected when changing settings, waveforms, dutys, frequency and everything? The Rigol DG812 and Siglent SDG1032X do not. They will fry your chip!

Unfortunately, you did not measure one of the most important parameters, the distortion (THD). Another hint: In the video, the sharpening is set too high. There are strange edges on sharp edges (e.g. control buttons).

Good point, I will follow up with a THD comparison.

Pushing the capabilities of cheap DSP and DACs has opened a lot of possibilities like this. It’d work well with a 3D-printed stand.

Why does Chinese equipment always have such bad fonts??

Because their "fonts" are much worse ;-)
