  • The Blue-eared Kingfisher (Alcedo meninting) is a striking bird species found in parts of Southeast Asia, particularly in countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Belonging to the kingfisher family, Alcedinidae, this small and elusive bird is renowned for its vibrant plumage and specialized hunting skills.
Adult Blue-eared Kingfishers typically measure around 13 to 15 centimeters in length. They have a stunning combination of colors, with bright blue upperparts, a distinct black mask extending from the bill to the nape, and a striking blue patch behind the eye, which gives them their name. Additionally, they have a white throat and underparts, with a rusty-orange belly.
Blue-eared Kingfishers are primarily found in forested habitats near streams, rivers, and other bodies of water. They are highly specialized hunters, feeding primarily on small fish, crustaceans, and aquatic insects. Using their sharp bills and keen eyesight, they dive from perches into the water to catch their prey with remarkable precision.
During the breeding season, male Blue-eared Kingfishers may engage in courtship displays, which involve vocalizations and aerial flights to attract mates. Nests are typically constructed in riverbanks or earthen cliffs, where the female lays eggs and both parents share incubation and chick-rearing duties.
While the Blue-eared Kingfisher is not considered globally threatened, it may face localized threats from habitat loss and degradation due to deforestation, urbanization, and changes in land use. Conservation efforts aimed at preserving and restoring suitable habitats are essential for ensuring the continued survival of this charismatic bird species, which adds color and vitality to its native landscapes.
