after some deliberation, I went with the Korg Wavestate SE and absolutely love it. The extra keys/octaves, aftertouch, etc really added to what was already a cool synth. The splits, layers and performances really bring out a whole new level of musicality out of the user
Whatever their Kronos flagship replacement is should be the thing to do it…but who knows where it is on the production schedule before it hits stores. Seems like there’s a big board lull on right now because of a long run of classy gear starting to saturate the market. I’m guessing the smaller gizmos will dominate for the next little while.
The Opsix is far and away the best implementation of FM synthesis. I just wish with the new versions they went for improved hardware control (ie - digital scribble strips, more knobs and faders, etc). This is definitely an improvement over the original but the improvements are not in the things that make the Opsix good. Like they fixed bottlenecks which is a good thing but it would have been nice if they took what already made the Opsix the best FM synth and made that even better
Yeah. Sweetwater has some good videos highlighting the interface implementation which I think is a must watch: ruclips.net/video/KLkhJHByLOU/видео.html They really did a great job with the UI. I'd buy this myself if I didn't have a Kurzweil K2700 which has a Dx7 in it as one of the synth engines.
I think the modulation graphic representation in old and new Montage is still superior (you can "see" the sound much easier than trying to imagine it or hear, when programming something more advanced than just tweaking fabric presets.
Modx with way more polyphony efx editing options although you lose the aftertouch and direct hardware editing knobs. For not much more$$ A used montage under $2k might be a better buy much better build more poly still
The tones are nice, but a lot of wasted real estate on the main panel; better build quality, AT (channel or poly?), and the case notwithstanding, does it justify its price?
Sounds nice - but except the AT there is no reason at all to replace my MODX7 from 2019 by the Opsix. The MODX has a maximum of 8 operators per part, theoretically multiplied by 8 parts, also much more versatile otherwise (samples) - and ca. €500 cheaper!
the Yamaha DX1 had 2 DX7's inside back in 1983 and 40 years later Korg can't match that for $2200? shame. KQ Dixie iOS app can act as 4 DX7s + at once.
I think they're on the right track, but I hate that they didnt include a built-in power supply. How hard could that have been ? They got plenty of space in there ..
Only thing that bothers me is that for this 2000£/€ stage keyboard, they couldnt fit a power supply in the bit metal chassis… for this price and size I’d say that’s a requirement, at least for me
It's all the same platform as the initial OpSix. Korg just put the same main board and interface board into a different case. They are basically unable to use an internal PSU because they may want to keep a certain profit level out of this... And the internal PSU just means another layout for the mainboard. This synth technologically looks very similar to the KingKorg btw. The same metal top and plastic bottom and almost the synth on a chip.
I dunno if Jack and the Andertons team have time for those educational videos these days but I'd love to see 1) do you think about FM epiano sounds differently than normal epiano sounds like wurli and rhodes? that decay is so long! If so how do you approach it? Also 2) what are your tips and tricks of 80s piano ballads / cliches of the genre? Would love to see it! Great vid as always gang
If you stick a metal plate on an instrument and give it some high-quality buttons, plus a few more buttons, that doesn't mean it's a luxury device. Although given the price, the tactic seems to be obvious.
It makes no sense to me why they released a MKII version of Wavestate (cheaper than original Wavestate here in the USA) and the Wavestate SE but ONLY released Opsix SE, no MKII Opsix...🤦♂️🤷♂️😅
Compared to the original does this one seem faster in following the keyboard? Watching the video it does seem to have less latency compared to many poly synths where it is a press and wait situation and you can actually see that the sound is following the key-press a bit behind. Good to see you actually playing spontaneously. Is this keyboard supporting your spontaneity as the speed of many keyboards are good for playing what you already know; good for imitating : when the song is already playing in the listener's head; versus creating: where you need the instrument to convey what you are spontaneously improvising and needing every millisecond to come up with then next note without midi latency pile up and the distraction of the sequence of notes not coming out with the timing nuance you expected. I would like you to give your subjective feeling about these matters when you review a keyboard.
Entertaining as always Jack...but that keyboard is not my cuppa tea. It's the beige-est keyboard i think i've ever heard. The case is a lovely addition tho!
How are they charging so much for the new SE versions. £1600-£1800, the original 37 keys were only £500-600. They still have tiny crap mono screens ffs!
That flight case is the equivalent of a Teleshopping buy of one item and they send you a useless 40-piece accessory set on top to make you think: Jesus, all that stuff for the money! Axe the thing, lower the price by at least 200 quid and put the rest of the money into doubling the size of that ridiculous display from 1989.
Honestly.. everyone wanted a mk2 of the opsix, but not the exact same 400$ synth but for 2000$ with the only difference being added keyboard length.. x_x i dont even
Korg combine all three synth engines with a reguler pcm samples romplwr engine in one for $1299 Allow enough polyphony for layering splits multitrack sequencer and multitrack audio recording to SSD card and fast 1 TB SSD loading of those 16 audio and instrument tracks. With sequencer ssd and tons of sampled sounds say 64 gb on a 1 tb ssd Layers splits scene e4c. This would be the best selling synth 8n the world no computer tablet 9r 0h9ne needed for sampling editing audio and synth recording. Built in HDMI and USB mouse input for editing and recording on the big screen faders knobs.
Cela se voit quand Jack n'est pas convaincus et en générale je ne suis pas spécialement habitué à la FM et pourtant G tout de suite entendus que ça ne va pas .

My dream is having a Korg synth containing the Opsix, Modwave, Wavestate and Kronos sample based stuff in one chassis/keyboard.
You can have that- a midikeyboard with the Korg vsts. Which is basically what the Opsix, Modwave, Wavestate already is.
@@cyberhawken and you can make it multitimbral by just adding another track.
The new Monage M is pretty close to that.

I agree in regards to that specific feature but, as a whole, I don’t think it is enough to put the Montage ahead
Man, I love the opsix native plugins so much, I'm gonna get this bad boy!!!
Love the brownish tinged case and green buttons…it surely is the illegitimate child of the DX7😂
Even the look of it echoes the OG DX7 👍
A real players synth… fantastic demo Jack
Of all the ones, this is one of the ones.
Well - its cheaper than my second hand Oasys was, which had a flight case too. I expect it weighs a lot less as well!!
The tones are nice, but a lot of wasted real estate on the main panel; better build quality, AT (channel or poly?), and the case notwithstanding, does it justify its price?
I really really really want one. Next on my list

people sleep on the modx
@@playeveryday01 those who evade romplers yet want an FM machine sleep on the MODX, yes
I like Korg's 'retro' look on this - the brown control panel, knobs & sliders remind me of the old Korg Delta - my 2nd band had one in the 80's!

"synth on a chip"
Every digital keyboard of the last three decades, yes

Yamaha needs to release a new Dx7 synth like this. Korg has beat them to the punch. Could get a MoDx, sure, but something simpler, just the FM...
That thing seems like a beast for Industrial and ominus sounds
11:37 was instant nostalgia vibes.
U can make this sort of sound wtih a hAmmond b3 , take the reface yc set up your voices and put some externale effects , done .
This, the Genos, & the Jupiter X are the last hardware synths I'd want... i think. I might finally be willing to part with my TG-77 for this.
The Opsix is nice (and very user friendly, but it’s no TG-77
@@teamfrankmediaAw, 😭 don't say that. i need to downsize at this point.
Et voila , seems amazing but i will waiting 4 a comparaison avec le Reface dx , because i mad it with the opsix three otcaves and the reface win
The Hand of OZ!
That Michael McDonald moment made me snortle root beer out my nose! And I wasn’t even drinking root beer!
Jack...it's "op-six" as in "operator" as in "FM operator". Not O-P six. :) It has six operators.
😊...... good call though Scott ! 😎🙌
No, it really is Over-Powered! O-P!
Either are fine, at least in here in Japan. The engineers flip back and forth.
Mr Duxbury is free to use whichever he would like.

‘Another Part of Me’ by Michael Jackson!!! Great riff for that preset 😊. Awesome demo 👏
FM ages like wine!

I'll wait 4 ur wave state platinium ...
This or modx for fm only
The Yamaha is the better deal, or wait for Opsix Mk2 (non-SE)
What bothers me is that it seems that the original has been discontinued. And this SE version is nice, but goes for crazy price.
Modwave and Wavestate got Mk2 versions, you know? Opsix Mk2 is probably delayed.
I’ve been waiting for this video. But no Luke 😢.
Exactly, where’s Luke from Korg!
@@brymills, he is not allowed out to play!

Does it have a piano and bass sound
FM piano and FM basses.
This only does FM sounds. Think Yamaha DX7... on steroids.
This Keyboard can read samples?
Nope
Je me demande si Korg a saisie la technique pour la FM car la leur semble très pauvres par rapport au reface qui est ma seule référence .
The Reface has a far more limited sonic pallette versus Opsix, MODX6, and FM8.

Should have named this The DX Heaven.

excelente calidad me gusto
In term of sound u clearely , fly away with the reface but not here .
This looks like an amazing synth, but I simply cannot afford that price
You'd be pleased to know there's a Raspberry PI inside, it's just a fancy chassis with a nice box.
Where’s Luke?!

Yamaha's offering is the MODX6+ with an 8-op FM engine. A different beast from the Opsix.
Hmmm too much the price - sorry Korg! Others may disagree of course.
dont like it. never liked the dx7…aint gonna like this neither
