- Chariots of Fire is a British film released in 1981. Written by Colin Welland and directed by Hugh Hudson, it is based on the true story of British athletes preparing for and competing in the 1924 Summer Olympics.
One of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite movies.
I first saw this movie when I was about 15yrs old and I have it to blame for the thousands upon thousands of miles that I've run since then. It was without a doubt one of the greatest influences of my early years. Even now there are several scenes that bring a tear to my eye.
@NJFastEddie Ian Charleson actually wrote that speech himself for the film, as he felt the original speech as written was overly pompous and pious etc...the producer-director agreed (thankfully), so what we have here is a heartfelt, genuine, brilliantly written piece that will live long in the ages...a masterpiece sermon if ever there was one! :) great film!
Ian Charleson was scripted to deliver a speech which he deemed too sanctimonious for the scene and his character. This one was one which he wrote for himself on short notice. It works beautifully!
Agreed. Well said. It is a very encouraging impromptu. FP.
Yes, I agree, this is the one scene from this classic I first saw 43 years ago is the ONE I REMEMBER THE MOST .... this is a classic scene and we owe Ian Charleson (who died of AIDS a few years later) an eternal debt of gratitude.
The rain during Ian's address is a wonderful component
im almost 16 and a devout cross country and 800 meter runner. im also very involved in my church. above all, i am angered by my piers and the choices they make these days. i find this speech very very powerful and completely agree with it.
Outstanding.
Eric Liddell is a great man , truly he is !
2:03"Jesus said," is the heart of the movie.
beautiful.
Brilliant speech :)
Many years ago I saw a programme in the uk called clapperboard and they reviewed Chariots of Fire, the presenter mentioned that at the premiere a relative of Eric Liddell met Ben Cross who played Abrahams and said…so good to meet you Mr Abrahams….it was like winning an Oscar according to Ben cross,I hope I got the story right but what a compliment
Well said.
I read Luke recently and remember that passage was very similar, but I thought it was elsewhere in the Bible too, since that line doesn't mention the part about finding Him if you truly seek Him. Thank you for the response.
The enduring power of the Word of God.
I am an christian myself, but people like Liddell and many other missionaries do something selfless and reach out to people whose deeds are far superior than any men...
..God bless their works....
"If you commit yourself to the love of Christ, then that is how you run a straight race."
Charles David, Sky Diver of the Gypsy Moths and Golden Knights taught me about Eric Liddell.
AMEN
@NJFastEddie I agree that this scene is amzing and powerful. The story is inspirational. Resonding to your comment above, yes kids do listen to rap. But every generation has its problems. When you look back at older generations, its normal to thinkl that the times were better than now. We all forget the bad and remember the good. And older people tend to do that real well. But really, that generation had its good and bad just like ours.
What is the name of the hymn being sung??
'fight the good fight with all thy might'.
Jesus shall reign..
@xchotch
Dude right on and good for you! Unfortunatley I just fell into drinking again for 3 days and nearly lost my home and stuff.
Fight the good fight and I will too.
Blessed be the Name of Jesus Christ :The Son of the Eternal Living God
Luke 17:21
Where is that specific line "Behold, the Kingdom of God is within you..." in the Bible? Thank you.
infancysguard king james bible i believe
Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.
It's Luke 17:21
Amen enough said lets bust a run for Jesus
Look up Howard Storm here on YT--who was once an atheist-- and listen to his account about his near death experience and being with Jesus. It is very powerful, and it may give you something to think about.
i am an atheist but i agree with what your saying...even though i think everything factual about religion is ultimately incorrect, it does keep many people in line and its morals are (for the most part) correct
Eric Liddell touched a lot of lives, including mine, and I found this cartoon that was actually better than the movie - ruclips.net/video/A8Br-VHEVqM/видео.html
@NJFastEddie It's social engineering. Look at the feminist movement and who funded it. The separation of the family by having both parents work so the government can collect double the taxes, and put the children in pre-pre school "education" facilities. So the state becomes the parent. A whole other disastrous issue is immigration. Multiculturalism has never worked in the history of mankind, which is why we have open boarders in Europe and America. I could go one by I think everyone can follow
Great movie, except for the fact that they barely mention "Christ" or "Jesus", and it never mentions that Jesus (the Christ) suffered and died as payment for everyone's sins, and then physically rose again, after being buried in a sealed and guarded tomb for three days, proving He can defeat anyone's death, including His own. A very religious, pro-Christian movie, about a very devout and talented servant of God, but practically Christ-less and totally Gospel-less, however.
