That's so important - even if the episode was below average the endings left you with something that lingered in your mind for a long time afterwards. And so often they'd leave you with a new song you'd never heard before.

Favorite scene of the entire series. If you read the lyrics to The Valley it’s spot on to the next episode where Christopher is killed. “Out of the darkness and into the light”. What happens after the accident and tony starts to kill him? They are in the darkness of night and then a light sweeps across the sky from above.
I love how at the end of the scene Christopher walks into the house and closes the door. The shot then stays on the door for a few seconds more then it should have. Then cuts to black and then stays black for longer then it should have , just like the final scene of the entire series.
This Los Lobos album is actually really good.

This is David chase’s most moving piece of work throughout the series imo.
So much contrasting imagery at play. Christopher’s overwhelmed conscious forcing him to replant the tree as if it somehow levels the score for the sins he’s committed.
The contrast of how far he’s come materialistically from when we first met him as a poor but generally well-meaning kid (mansion, brand-new suv, expensive suit) vs how low he’s sunk morally to get there. A defeated man, caught hopelessly in the throes of addiction despite his best efforts, ridiculed by his supposed “family” and ruthlessly manipulated by his father figure, yet so cowardly the person he punishes for his own mistakes is one of the few people who ever genuinely cared for his well being.
And of course, all brought together by a hauntingly soft yet chilling melody playing in the background. I would say this show was ahead of it’s time but that would imply others have met the standard it set in the 15 years since the screen cut to black.

More than any other Soprano’s character, Christopher’s character arc mirrored Tony’s perception of him.
He went from the promising young apprentice who Tony viewed as a son in many senses to just another resented nuisance who was manipulated and disposed of once he no longer served a purpose.
People talk about Carm or A.J. being the saddest characters but there’s no one Tony truly chewed up and spit back out more than Christopher. Sold his soul for a man who ended up hating him.

I don’t see why people think Carmela is the saddest character, Carmela is hypocritical, she’s an enabler, she knows full well what her husband does for a living and doesn’t care because she’s sitting on a mountain of luxury and even once admitted that Tonys life of crime and power turned her on, she thinks by going to a chapel and crying to a priest that it assuages her of any guilt just because she’s a practicing Catholic, she’s just a horrible human being, AJ on the other hand is just a product of his environment being spoiled and lazy, his parents failed him

For me I think House Arrest, Cold Cuts, and Stage 5 have the best endings.
House Arrest (Season 2 episode, just the guys all happy, things are good, they witness a car wreck, Agent Harris and Tony have a friendly chat, Johnny Thunders "You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory)
Cold Cuts (s5 episode, Tony and Tony B mock Chris for his sobriety and then Tony later mocks and tears down Janice for bettering herself when he knows he cannot. The Kinks "I'm Not Like Everybody Else").
Stage 5 (Phil has finally had enough of everything, Tony and Chris share one last embrace, but the love is gone, John Cooper Clarke "Evidently Chickentown")

Phenomenal take but I would add Long Term Parking. The panning up from the leaves and Tony’s shoes as a visual cue for what their lives are built on with Shawn Smith’s “Wrapped in My Memory” is too good

Plus when Christopher walks into the house and shuts the door the camera holds on the door for eight seconds, longer then it should have. While on the door the following lyrics are sung “work through the day , for as long as we are able.” After that last word it cuts to a black screen foreshadowing his death. He won’t be able to work much longer because he is killed the next episode. The screen stays black for three to four seconds.

Its a reflection of his nature. He was groomed into this toxic asshole who betrays everyone by Tony, and then when he goes to his friend to vent about how much he hates his friends, the mafia, his friend doesnt even care about him, and just wants him to leave him alone. What is worse is that JT basically rejected Christopher's pity and regret and insisted that he is a mafioso bully, and nothing else. Or at least, that's how Chris interpreted it.
The whole thing is just how absolutely alone Christopher is in life. Especially when he betrayed Adriana.

To a place so far away
    Across the land
    Where the earth was
    As tough as clay
    Looked at their hands
    Looked all around
    And they seemed pleased
    At what they had found
    Here in the valley
    Bread on the table
    Work through the day
For as long as we are able
    Green is the valley
    Blue is the night
    Out of the shadows
    Into the light
    They could have gone
But instead they chose to stay
To watch the clouds way up high
    As they turned to gray
    And through the dark
    Broke a crimson sun
    And at that moment
Knew their lives had just begun
    Here in the valley
    Bread on the table

    • @thesprawl2361
      @thesprawl2361 2 года назад +52

It's so rare that a show will present you with a person like him, who just will not get better. Who, for every step forward takes ten steps back. It must be tempting to give him a redemptive arc, but the central brilliance of Sopranos and what made it unique is that it never fell into that trap. The characters didn't have arcs. They just existed, and, as we learn as we get older, people really don't change. Chrissie was just a terrible human being, and remained that way throughout. But you still root for him to make it. It still broke my heart a little when I saw him wailing in the fetal position when he finds out Adrianna's been informing behind his back. You see these two people who love each other, moaning in fear and agony, holding onto one another at their darkest moment, and for a moment you see that they both have a chance to do something genuinely brave, and make a run for it.
Then the next season he's married someone new and never, ever mentions Adrianna ever again. He's a hypocrite and a coward, like almost everyone on earth, and he's occasionally hopeful and kind, and funny, like almost everyone on earth. We all contain multitudes. None of us are wholly bad or good; The Sopranos recognised this ambiguity and that's why these characters seemed so real.

Big house and fancy cars and clothes or not damn he should have chose the people who actually loved him so sad. Pretty self explanatory why he got high and why tony killed him. The ade episode is really where I felt disconnected from all the characters and was just watching for q conclusion , only got worse (inside of the show not the show) from there lol

Christopher was always living in regret of what he did to Ade. He was more conscious of it at times than at others. He has nobody in his life left to vent to, like he did to Ade time and time again. He goes to some guy he knows from AA and all the dude does is brush him off and ignore his desire to change.
Chrissy trying to fix that tree is just indicative of so much stuff for me too. He wants so desperately to atone for all his regrets and sins, but its way too late. The roots are broken, he's living in a hell that he's designed for himself.
