I was at the game and will never be able to forget the confusion and panic when he didn't get up; and will never be able understand how parents let their sons play the sport after witnessing that. A freak accident for sure, but there is always that risk.
I think the only one who has died on field was Charles H. in 1979 and it was from a heart attack rather than a hard hit or sum, but idk if someone got injured and died out of the field.

I used to cover the local high school football team and the same thing happened to the star running back - the worse thing about it was the team was dominating the game but the coach kept him in so he could break the school's rushing record (and it cost them in the post season)

The game itself can sometimes be slow but the players themselves aren't, the reason they don't wear pads is because they know how to tackle safely or at least safer than in the past. most of the hits either aren't that good of hits or are penalty helmet to helmet, there are a lot of way harder clean hits out there to watch. also when she said "soccer players are usually on the ground for 15 minutes" is why I don't watch soccer.
