Man, I really like RR as a person. Good guy and a good leader of men. However, the football side made me scratch my head more than any other coach I’ve seen
2023 draft was so awful. No idea how you take Forbes over Gonzalez and Ron had also told Brian Branch he’d take him and then didn’t. Both have worked out nicely respectively. That’s the worst case of the yips I’ve ever heard of so can’t imagine what he’s like on the putting greens
Matt Millen was the same way. For an entire offseason before the 2005 Draft there was one thing on his mind: Drafting DeMarcus Ware. But someone, somehow, got to him and he was convinced to take Mike Williams instead. Mike Williams is a Journeyman WR. DeMarcus Ware is in Canton. And Aaron Rodgers was later in that draft. (Of course Carlos Rogers was picked before all of them by Washington.)
Yeah - didn’t like RR as coach or person. Lacked accountability. Blamed everyone around him. Threw others under the bus constantly. When he released Turner he wrote on the team release paper the “offense wasn’t up to his standards” - Really? What standards are those exactly? 3 winning seasons in 13?? Never back-to-back winning seasons over 13 years coaching? Common theme from this year’s players is that now there’s a culture. Now there is accountability. Starts at the top. RR is no different than Jeff Fischer
How he gets so much respect in this league is beyond me. Hasn’t had a winning season in a decade or so. Without Cam and Luke he’d have barely lasted in the league has a head coach
I have to disagree on that, they had an excellent defense that year in 2015 truthfully the combo of Ron with full control and Snyder as owner really was a failure overall but his success in Carolina wasn’t only Cam (I love Cam I just think it was a 50/50) I’m a Washington fan but live in NC
If Ron makes the right move and drafts Christian Gonzalez, we win a couple of extra games last year, and miss out on Jayden (and Maye, who also looks like he’s a franchise QB). This is all to say, we needed Ron to be exactly as bad as he was in order for the Commanders to succeed moving forward. To wish he had filled some holes with better talent is irrational.
All of what's discussed in this video is true and accurate, but Rivera also was comfortable trading away assets in his final year to set the team up for success this year. Peters and DQ had a lot of draft capital and salary cap room to maneuver. As a result, regardless of Rivera's mistakes, we were able to improve DRASTICALLY in a mere single offseason. How deep was the hole? Not so deep that it couldn't be dug out of in a few months.
Incompetent Ron had no choice in the matter as those trades were the decisions of the new ownership. If he pushed back he would most likely would have been dumped.
This is a false narrative. I wish some of you guys would do researching before posting lies. EB agreed to a 1yr contract at UCLA to help a friend. Then return to the NFL. That was widely known when he went to UCLA. He was not fired.
Rivera is a good man and leader. He was doing too much. He needed to be the coach and not running all the operations. And doing this with Snyder and cancer. It was way too much and it shouldn't have been placed on him
Craig, this is one of your more informative shows, and that's saying a lot because all your shows are very informative. Everything you said was so on point. Thanks for a spectacular show.🙃🙂
Rivera really set this team back in my opinion. The only reason why it doesn’t look as bad is because of what Adam Peters has been able to do with this team. Imagine not having Adam Peters and still having Ron Rivera as the coach/gm? Imagine where this team would be this year versus how this team is now. We would all be talking about who we are going to possibly get in the 2025 NFL draft with one of the top 5 overall picks next year.
I was done with Ron Rivera totally. When he said, before he was fired, its time to roster build. As if he wasn't here for 5 years already. What a bafoon. Smh
Craig, I agree with some of what you're saying as I usually do. But keep in mind that Jamin Davis was a Ron Rivera experiment gone bad. Rivera drafted an athletic outside linebacker and tried to make him the next Luke Kuechly and moved him to middle linebacker. Davis was just drafted into a dysfunctional situation but still has talent. And I personally believe they should move Daron Payne to left defensive end. He is athletic enough and would be a better run stopper playing on the outside. Let me know what you think.
The worst part is the fans called who were the best picks each year. Everyone said JOK or Christian Darrisaw over Jamin. Gonzo over Forbes was a no brainier.
He left us in almost as bad of a hole as we were in in 2019 considering he came in in 2020 with us having the 2nd overall pick and us having that in 2024 as well in Ron’s 4 drafts he selected 33 players of those 33 only 11 are on the active roster and only 2 are on the practice squad as of me typing this all 4 of his first round picks are gone and his entire 1st draft class is gone as well Ron should be working at Buffalo Wild Wings in vista gardens for this level of ineptitude
Talent assessment in the NFL is the long term key to success and very few GM's have the skill set to do it consistency. Snyder kept hiring his yes men and the simple fact of the matter is they didn't know talent.
I called Ron a con man from day 1 after I heard his introductory interview. He's a career .500 coach with a 15-1 season so realistically he's under .500. he never has drafted well in Carolina or developed talent that wasn't a 1st round pick. And he inherited Jon Fox's team when he first got to Carolina. Not to mention we beat his Panthers and got him fired so why hire a coach of a team that you are better than? Never made sense for from the beginning.
High performing GM’s hit on the 1st three rounds of the draft at a very high clip. Then they find diamonds in the rough in the later rounds that outperform their draft slot at an above average clip. Missing on 1sr and 2nd round picks sets teams behind years. Ron under performed at such an alarming rate it was criminal. The fact that Peters and DQ have this team competing for a playoff spot is remarkable. Top level team building. We need 2 more successful drafts and FA to compete for a SB. I believe in Adam Peters. He’s the real deal!
Eric Bienemy was a disaster to Washington. Coach Rivera spent the year comforting Eric’s ego and putting out dumpster fires with the players Eric was causing.
I don't think the team is in a big hole. Now if they didn't hire AP and brought in someone who isn't really good at finding talent then yea it would be bad. Yet AP has this team in a good position to be good for atleast the next 3yrs. Two straight yrs with over 100mil in FA and the team has kept there draft picks and getting more value as well. I'll say this team is in great shape
Adam Peters should win executive of the year for what he has done in one offseason. Ron Rivera was overwhelmed by the amount of responsibilities he had. Ron's biggest failure was not taking action sooner by communicating the problems and hiring the right help.
This is why the losing streak didn’t bother me. We were winning but there was an element of guys collectively playing over their heads and everything going right. At some point, you need talent especially if you have designs on being a true contender. I would argue we have needs at almost all positions (how much longer are Wagner and Ekeler playing for example). We’re set at QB but we have lots of work to build out the rest of the roster.
I thought what we gave up for RG3 set us back, but RR probably was worse because his "hits" were almost accidents. And that was just the draft. I'm hard-pressed to believe they did many upgrades from what he inherited from the last staff. Did his coaches, coach, or they just had their schemes and didn't adjust to the players, playing? Depth was terrible the last year he coached; letting players leave. I guess d-line was his best starting group, but that was a lot of money for an okay group; the DTs the best.
Ron was a good man, but terrible coach. Even when Carolina was winning, it was because of the unique athleticism of Cam in his prime who probably had a stymied career because of Ron.
RR never was the same after cancer diagnosis. Thank God for his recovery but I just don't think the focus, desire, whatever you want to call it, was there following his recovery.
Does Ron still want his ring; even though they had to get rid of 80% of the players he signed and drafted? It is remarkable where this team is from the hole it was left in months ago. Just shows how important ownership, front office and coaching staff is. I’m still pissed about Ron taking Forbes over Gonzalez.

for someone who played on a Super Bowl winning team, one of the best teams in the modern era, Tugboat seemed to have zero concept of any aspect of the game... player evaluation, play calling, time management etc.... and I keep hearing what a standup guy he is, but he never took any ownership of anything while he was here.... always someone else's fault... its ok to be a bit stubborn if what you are doing works, but he just was out of his league while here. So glad he is gone.
Who cares? RR did so bad that he put us in position to land Jayden and look at us now. 8-5 and looking to hit the playoffs. Did he set us back, or set us up??
Look, I get it, he was bad in terms of player personal decisions. But without his incompetence we would not have Jayden Daniels. So for that I just say thanks and move on. As for Forbes, they tried to salvage a 1st rd pick but it didn't work out. So they moved on.
