Automate marine heatwave detection from sea surface temperature data | R

  • A heatwave event occurs when the temperature exceeds 90 percentile of the historical average for five consecutive days or more. Such an event taking place on the sea is called a marine heatwave. It has been reported to cause coral bleaching where corals suffer and die from continuous heat.
    To detect marine heatwave events, continuous multi-temporal temperature data are needed. The data can be obtained from satellite measurement with a thermal sensor onboard or modeling, resulting in gridded/raster sea surface temperature data with spatial dimension. This kind of data is usually stored in a NetCDF or array format which can handle multi-variables and multi-temporal data.
    This video demonstrates how to detect marine heatwave events from a time-series sea surface temperature data. A library called 'heatwaveR' (Hobday et al. 2016) was used. More details about the package can be found here: robwschlegel.g...

    Peristiwa gelombang panas (heatwave) terjadi ketika suhu melebihi 90 persentil dari rata-rata historis selama lima hari berturut-turut atau lebih. Peristiwa yang terjadi di laut disebut gelombang panas laut (marine heatwave). Telah dilaporkan menyebabkan pemutihan karang dimana karang menderita dan mati karena panas yang terus menerus.
    Untuk mendeteksi kejadian gelombang panas laut, diperlukan data suhu multitemporal yang berkesinambungan. Data tersebut diperoleh dari pengukuran satelit dengan sensor termal onboard atau pemodelan, sehingga menghasilkan data suhu permukaan laut yang bersifat grid/raster dan berdimensi spasial. Data semacam ini biasanya disimpan dalam format NetCDF atau array yang dapat menangani data multi-variabel dan multi-temporal.
