I wouldn't say an RCBO gives 'more protection' but they are a million times more convenient, being able to isolate a circuit and work on it without the worry of knocking half the board out is lovely 😂

Crabtree Starbreaker boards ... can get them with factory fitted type 2 SPD and they now do miniature RCBOs which are DP and no functional earth. No issue with busbar as the RCBOs/MCBs are click-fit and they do a variety of blanking solutions, the best being the ‘dummy MCB’ style that clamp onto the rail. Not the prettiest board but functionally the dogs danglies although a bit pricey.

  • @acat6821
    @acat6821 5 лет назад +12

Good idea is to just mark 1 2 3 and so on with dashes on the cables. Then you can reference to the old board what the circuits are and keep rings together and the like

  • @MandeepSingh-kl5rq

Always trust your gut Tom, whenever a customer says stuff like "is that your best price or can you do it a bit cheaper", I just need a second/third opinion", "looks straight forward enough shouldn't take more then half n hour" you know it's time to just walk away & go to another job you've already got booked in.
And the cable clips to hold the notice on the wall pure genius, all it takes is a small dab of decorators caulk to fill the holes back in & away you go.

As others have said, the entire Megger 1700 MFT Series is brilliant, nice little features such as 2 lead low current auto loop test, super quick loop testing on noisy circuits, fast auto RCD test, test button either side of the unit. A friend of mine was a die-hard Fluke fanatic but is now switching to Megger after seeing what mine can do. Megger 1741 MFT seems to be the top of the line model.

A friend of mine who worked with me for several years, on and off, parted company with me a while ago. Sadly he passed away last year at the age of 39.
After the funeral and when things started to settle down after, I discovered that he'd used my napit number to create eicrs and installation certificates! I was advised to report it to the police and get a log number incase anything came of it. But always wondered what the upshot of any of his work falling foul, with my name and number on it would have?
    Great video as always.
Sincere and honest with a great personality.

Re the tester. Ive just got the Megger 1741. Great tester, good for different types of RCD, can also do earth electrode tests, which I think will become more common place, with EVC.
I only install Hager mini RCBO boards now, with so many rentals in London ( I work around Muswell Hill) once you explain to the Landlord the benefits of the RCBO board, they generally go with it. This board will be in service for a good 30 years, so at about £310 for a 10 way, its £10.33 a year.
So much work in London , I would leave that tower block for someone else.

    Exxxcellent Smithers.
The French MCBs are far better that the UK ones. At first glance they seem identical but they are double pole. P&N connect directly into the MCB like a RCBO.. They use a twin busbar and no neutral bar. RCBOs don't need (don't have) a trailing neutral cable indeed RCBS are not even required, The dual RCD board now fully meets the spirit of the regulations. Neutral identification is straightforward and unambiguous, if one faulty circuit causes the RCD to trip, Identifying the faulty circuit is easy, the offending circuit can be switched off by the MCB, fully isolating the faulty circuit, and the RCD reset allowing remaining healthy circuits to be reinstated by the user without opening up the consumer unit to get access to the neutral bar. The electrician is still needed to correct the fault, but at a reasonable time (in the next few days or so) in daylight without letting down another customer, upsetting the wife or missing the match. How much better is that? Especially if it's a 11pm "warranty" callout because the customer has filled a socket with wallpaper paste whilst redecorating after a rewire. Would you charge?
I contacted a couple of the manufacturers to find wholesalers who stock them and the both said that although they are compliant in the UK as they are EN60898 and therefore BS7671, yet they have no plans to offer them to the UK market because A) "There is no demand for them here" (very few electricians even know about them) and B) "UK contractors would loose call-out charges to reset RCDs." !!!

13:10 - it is like a registration plate on a car - happens all the time, people clone a car, it may get used in a crime and the police knock at the rightful owners door. My grandfather, who was in his late 80's at the time got a knock on the door from the police wanting to see his car - it had been used in a ramraid in London. He lives 100's of miles away and his car was in perfect condition in the garage. Police knew it would be the case but had to check, so as you say Tom, it comes to nothing and would not hold water.

Then all you have to do is to put a note on your dash saying that you have the tag to park there. If they still fine you all you do is contact you and then they remove it. Hope it helps!

When completing the 18th, i asked the question about the plastic blanks, and was informed that if the Consumer unit Hinged Lid opens by lifting as it does on the board your installing then its acceptable as it will fall back down sealing the Breakers and creating its Fire integrity, But if it was to open folding down then metal blanks would have to be used as it could fall down and remain open.

so in your argument the current owner of the house that burned would have to die in the fire as well because they could also say you weren't the guy that did the electric work. But just to test your theory I just rewired a couple houses and put your number on the jobs, does it matter that I did the work in the US?

If the place had a fire, I doubt that the labels would survive.

Tom Give the proteus dual rcd split a go simply because it has a fixed busbar on both sides and personally I find that easier to install mcbs without the need for cutting the busbar ‘just a pet hate of mine’ 😂 also do you use your torque screwdriver much

The only thing interesting about electrics is fault finding, especially a good neutral fault. The grunt work isn't as much fun.
Would like to see some fault finding videos. 🤓

The quote for the thatched cottage they probably don’t realise should all be metal in the roof and the spark probably hasn’t quoted to do it properly

Oops - Should be using a torque screwdriver for terminals. As stated in board fitting instructions!! I do know that us sparkies have calibrated wrist, but even so....

If I were a punter, I would definitely call £10-11k 'substantially cheaper' than £13k. It wouldn't have to be as low as £7k - I'd call that 'almost half'!
