I’m putting an om606 in a 91 pickup. It’s actually a 1985 Toyota camper chassis with the 91 cab. Om606, Toyota 22r bellhousing, and a NP435 from a mid 70’s Dodge truck. Just finished making my adapter plates today. Had to modify/fabricate my own flywheel, mix and match clutch parts, make my own adapter for the pilot bearing, ect. I thought I was the only one crazy enough to stuff one of these engines in a little Toyota pickup!
looks nice. Another bed idea would be to have the sides like a military 5 ton. When you let them down they are on pins like a door hinge. All you have you do is slide them sideways and they would come off.
Awesome truck man I literally just picked up an e300 and I’m gonna drive it for a year a or then mechanic pump swap into my Tacoma would definitely love some pointers
Very nice build you have there. We dont have the om606 here in south africa but we do have the om613. I have considered swapping it into my 1989 Hilux 2.2 but I don't think the standard g52 gearbox will like it to much.
Awesome truck! I love the custom bed and the color. This is one of the coolest yota builds I've seen.. I'm interested to know why the stock master cylinder wont work with the om606.
Thank you for the kind words. The person that did the adapter kit from the om606 to the r150f Toyota transmission built a flywheel to accept a BMW M5 clutch. German cars typically need a larger throw to engage the clutch. So the stock Toyota stop would not work. I even tried Parts off of a tundra and newer Tacomas. Nothing worked. I had to do it this way.
Hey man I got a 1995 Toyota pickup an playing on doing the same motor swap. I’d be super interested in another video explaining any hiccups you’ve had or any tips! Awesome truck 👌
Very cool. It seems like the engine fits alittle better in the tacoma then the pickup. Mines a 94. Pre tacoma. Check out elis workshop on RUclips. He did an insane 2 wheel drive tacoma om606 swapped. If u have any questions on mine specifically just send me another message and I can explain the best I can. Or follow me on Instagram @crazgrk
@@crazgreek i saw that video too and its cool to see more people like you doing the swap, I've always thought it made a bunch of sense in a Toyota. You talk about how tight the motor fits inside the Toyota which is probably what discourages so many. Fantastic build and thanks for sharing

What transmission are you using and how did you adapt the bell housing? Also, why the Mercedes over a Cummins R2.8 or the VW diesel? Love the truck and bed design. I have an older 02 Tundra that I consider swapping a diesel into.
Parts are readily available. Hard to say what the fuel economy is. It's not as good as a 22RE but it's not terrible. I'm having a ton of fun with this truck so it's not really fair to say it's bad fuel economy LOL I need to drive it like a normal person to really say what it is. Parts aren't too pricey either. It doesn't have a computer. It's running an om603 mechanical pump with larger elements. Very simple design
@alex kala I have recently looked at a similar project with Mercedes. I love those old diesel. It's a king cab Mazada. Great body bad motor. What's your best advice?
Put an OM606 in my 80 series cruiser back in 2017. Had an r150f out of an 07 taco with a 99 Dodge Dakota bellhousing and a jeep input mates to a 79 series transfer case adapter mated to a 62 series vacuum shift transfer converted using 70 series cruiser parts. Had to design my own adapter plate and flywheel and have them machined...Looking back, I wish I had waited for someone else to make the adapter like DPUK. I had their 550hp IP with the billet anti-jerk running compounds. Blew 1-2 shift collar straight through the fork, Lol. Looks like you're running benzforce exhaust manifold and turbo? What IP? What kind of boost and power are you seeing? Been looking at doing a regular R150F adapter from DPUK to make transmission work easier. Any complaints there?
Wow. That sounds like quite the Frankenstein lol. I'm running dpuk cast manifold, the dpuk trans adapter, off the shelf borg warner sxe 252 turbo and a benz force ip. I'm pretty happy with everything. Just got the truck on the road, so I'm running it at 25 psi for now until I run it a little bit and work some kinks out.
I've been eyeballing the DPUK stainless cast manifold and new intake. How far out from the head does the manifold stick out? I've been trying to get Luke to give me an answer but get a lot of beating around the bush with some questions. Great build by the way! I really like that bed design. That is a very intelligently designed bed.
I believe you are the only person right now with one of these in a mini truck... im assuming you had to push the trans and tcase back a few inches? What are you plans for an intercooler? Seems like a top mount might work?? These are night and day better than the 617 everyone wants.
There are a few people that have done it. Nothing quite like this though LOL and yes I had to push the transmission and engine back 2.5 in. the intercooler is mounted on top of the engine like a Subaru. And I'm going to be cutting a hole in the hood for a vent
@@crazgreek Thanks for the quick reply. Are you worried about engine heat melting anything on the firewall/inside the cab? Do you think the mini truck radiator would have kept it cool?
Also forgot to mention, the stock radiator won't work. Inlet and outlet are in the wrong spots, and it's an awkward shape. Custom is the only way to go.
Nice! I went with the .63 but I'm afraid it might be alittle too big. I'm thinking of swapping it out with the .48. Just don't want to hurt the top end. Please let me know how it goes once u install it
Hi crazygreek! I had a couple of questions you could help me please, my main questions are regarding the transmission of the mercedes an adapting it to toyota. did you modify the carter? what gear box are you using? are you modifying the transmission of the car? is it manual transmission?
Hi Franz, look up dpuk . (Dieselpumps uk) he makes all kinds of adapters for the OM series engines to fit on a number of different transmission. I went with the r150f Toyota transmission out of a 95 4Runner. So far so good. It's the four-wheel drive five-speed transmission and transfer case. But he makes a doctor plates and kit for all kinds of different Transmissions. USA domestic transmissions and foreign.
@@crazgreek hi crazgreek thanks a lot for the quick answer! is it mandatory to get this adapters to get it to work? I see the price tag is a bit heavy... 1000 pounds at least. Can i make it myself?
You could try learning how to do it and making it yourself but by the time you learn how to do it and buy the supplies and pay a machinist to make the adapter plate and then buy The Heavy Duty clutch you're going to be into it for at least 800 anyways. So you might as well buy one that's already made and engineered to work. Something that's been proven to fit properly
Yeah I had to hammer it a little bit. Also made some doors on the transmission tunnel so I can get to the upper bellhousing bolts we're both the transmission. Also had to use a 2-inch body lift
It comes with an electronically controlled pump from factory. (Edc) however, everyone has a on603 pump rebuilt amd we use that with larger elements. Look up dpuk on youtube and watch his videos
Thats an awesome build i have you on Instagram and been watching your build, what slave cylinder have you used amd have you got a link to the master cylinder as well, i put the om606 in my ln106 hilux and have always had issue with the clutch.
I used the wilwood master with the wilwood pull type slave. Made my own bracket for the slave. Then I bought a small 7" brake booster and custom fabricated mounts and rods for everything to work.
Hey I have an 89 Toyota pickup what kind of modifications did you have to do to The transmission tunnel and or frame for the om606 to fit. And if You could do it all over again would you recommend any other modifications to push the engine back.
So on my 94, which is very similar, I installed a 2" body lift inorder to make thing sfit alittle bit easier. I had to hammer the firewall a tad to fit the stock oil filter housing. But if u relocate that u should be fine. I'm sure there's a way to fit it without the body lift. But it made I a ton easier with it. Also I cut in some bulkheads into the trans tunnel from inside the cab. This allows me to reach some of the bellhousing bolts with ease. Stay tuned in the next few weeks. I'll make another detailed video showing these things. If I did anything different I would probably have gone for the om605. The power of the 606 is just unnecessary for a truck like this. I should be running 40 PSI and it seems to pull like a train at 30. I might not boost it more
