The only way I can make any sense of the less than interested audience is a few factors I observed. Ok first & foremost I’m willing to bet my last dollar that Ms. Wilson was the opening act for a bigger artist at the time . I’m also willing to bet that whoever the main artist was was more than likely a hip-hop artist due to the lack of interest & appreciation for such a five octave singer likes Shanice that is able to hit even more notes than Mariah Carey. (Especially over present day Mariah )Now keep in mind this is 1994 and Her album 21 ways to grow had been released which I love that album and (by the wayShout out to the individual that uploaded this performance because I’ve been looking for performances from her during this era . For eternity) but it should be worth noting that Motown did a horrible job with promotion for this album also they gave her a new sound way too quickly from her previous album inner child and the result of all this was poor record sales & Minimal to no radio play compared to her massive hits before”saving forever4 u”, “ it’s for you” & “smile”. So nine times out of 10 everyone in the audience wasn’t familiar with any of these songs she performed off of the 21 ways to grow lp.. I’ve seen it so many times before that no matter how great a talent & especially with black audiences if they’re not familiar with the material its hard for them to get enthusiastic and excited for the artist especially if that’s not the main artist they came to see. Lastly this is just me nitpicking and giving Shanice all the benefits these were slow ballads with very little visual for the audience to get into I personally enjoy Shanice‘s performancesis even more when she has a combination of ballads and up-tempo songs with back up dancers I feel that she is her best at this point however due to the lack of Appreciation that this audience gave Shanice who was at this time very well aveteran in the game been in the music industry since she was 14 with two albums under her belt I doubt that having dancers would make that much of a difference. Gangster rap was very much in at this time and if it was R&B this was the era of the freaking nasty R. Kelly movement/Jodeci we’re being sexual on songs was almost a necessity to sell records. Shany still have to clean girl next-door cookie cutter image that may have not connected with this particular audience that seems they would’ve probably appreciate it Idina Howard are Patra half naked on the stage of course. I personally feel that Motown records did a disservice to Shanise with this album as far is as promotion wise & picking out the singles because it’s worth noting that I did not buy this album until 1998 and around that time it was already out of print so I actually had to go on a mission to find the CD traveling in several different states to used cd stores to find it: Overall this performance was a gem and such a rare performance because she rarely performs any songs from this album due to the poor record sales I assume. which is a shame because I listen to this album all the time front to back. Again this is just my theory based.on the obvious circumstances And what I know to be factual at this time for this era
