There's actually a video reaction from an old school animator for Disney, who worked on some of the old renaissance era animation. He talked about how there was a very similar fear going on around when Digital media was blossoming and Photoshop was threatening to take everyone's jobs just like how AI is perceived to do the same today. He actually fully embraces the advent of AI and is excited for it's future application.
He also very wisely points out the very obvious fact. You cannot stop progress. And it is best to look forward to what can be built with the new tools made available.
And yup, they trained it on Vampire Hunter D.

Twitter, as always, were furious when they saw Anime Rock Paper Scissors. But at the end of the day, Corridor Crew still had to hire artist to make their own anime style and not reliant on Vampire Hunter D datasets. Most of the time the AI only provides somewhat the "anime style rotoscoping", but the artistic directions are still human made.

On the first one they did use Vampire Hunter D to train the AI, but on the second one they paid an artist to create art references to train the AI because of the controversy of using the other art, not something they had made. That's why it looks a bit different. The actually tried to use AI and not steal someone else art. You should really watch the behind the scenes.

@@Kaimax61the amount of time and effort they put in is way more than just making an AI rotoscope characters. They easily could've just acted out every scene and essentially apply an AI filter on it but they didn't, they actually used a lot of creative and impactful effects. As a small vfx studio to make an anime in the traditional way with the shots they wanted to get would've taken countless hours and money, the whole reason they wanted to create was a tool for smaller creators to use and express their ideas.

@@Kaimax61 You know it doesn't help when people (who usually aren't even animators or artists in the first place) go around and gaslight actual artists from using software that happens to have AI implementations. It's even worse when said people don't actually understand how some of the software works such as Cascadeur, which while is AI assisted it doesn't completely remove the animators job since the animator is still working on posing, adjusting and timing. (The AI just removes the need for inbetweening/graph adjusting since it's all physics based animation). As an animator myself, I'll be the first to tell you that AI is here to stay. Automation happened to the automotive industry, food industry, arms industry and logistics. It was bound to happen to the creative arts sooner or later.

The whole Corridor Crew's AI cartoon thing is funny to me.
In effect they figured out a way to automate rotoscoping. Kind of neat, but not exactly as revolutionary as they might think. As an example, Joel Haver has a video about how he animates his own videos and it's the same core idea - automated rotoscoping. The only meaningful difference is the specifics of the technology used to achieve this goal. Joel uses Ebsynth, a program which breaks down an image painted over a keyframe and tries to assemble the rest of the shots around that. This method gives Joel a lot of control when it comes to deciding what the final product looks like, but it also demands much more work from him and VERY prone to failure. Corridor Crew use generative AI to effectively generate every frame of the video based on the footage they make. This method gives them much less control over the final product, requires them to actually invest in better props and costumes, but also is significantly less demanding when it comes to artist labor.
People treat them like they are the devil, but in reality they are just morons that think they invented the wheel after making one out of copper.

the first video they made, the AI was fed vampire hunter d pictures but they were very explicit and open that they did this and only did it because it was meant to be a proof of concept of what the tools could do. In the second episode they paid an artist to create his own unique art style based around these characters. I understand the concern that AI can "take artists jobs" but at the same time AI is nothing without the creative vision and intention behind it. What they are trying to do is make a process that's more accessible to smaller creators who want to make cartoons but don't have the time to draw every single frame.

Someone recently created an entire film on their own using blender without any stolen data. And a 14 year old did a whole animation sequence in Across the Spider Verse. There is no excuse for being lazy. Anyone can do it. Calling yourself an AI “artist” or AI “animator” is the same as calling yourself a chef because you microwaved pre cooked meals.
