Always gonna advocate for Frightmare to get one. If given to a competent director it could be a very fascinating take on parasocial relationships you’d find today. As is it’s an interesting horror take on something that’s become so prevalent now. Also Jeffrey Combs before Re-Animator is always a plus 😌
That could be a difficult list to compile unless he sticks to botched adaptations only. But a Top 5 original idea movies that deserve a second go would be neat. Have to find the potential in a good original idea that just had the wrong people in charge.
This is crazy, but in 1994 the Brazilian film called O Efeito Ilha (Effect Island) was released. It's about a television technician, after he receives an electric shock, he becomes the victim of a strange phenomenon and his image starts to occupy all TV channels, 24 hours a day, interfering in people's lives and behavior.
I always think of the movie The Vanishing. The Dutch original had one of the most shocking final acts I've ever seen - which was completely neutered in the US remake to give it a bad happy ending.
The remake was honestly okay, but yeah I hate the happy ending. The Dutch original is truly gut wrenching and the nihilistic ending is the cherry on top
Thinking about it still makes me uncomfortable. That's good storytelling. Hollywood loves to dumb down films. It's literally just wanting to make sure that the dumbest demographic also keeps buying tickets, and ending up underestimating audiences. Nowadays you can add keeping everything Chinese friendly and pc to some productions.
really waned to see "Let the Right One In" here. It got a worse American remake called "Let Me In" and in 2022 it even got a TV series adaptation that I still havent picked up yet. Was kinda hoping to get some spoilers if the series are actually worth going for.
La Femme Nikita is an absolute must for French action lovers. The American remake "codename Nina" was dumbed down to be a generic Hollywood thriller, missing the point of the movie. Nikita was a shooty thriller with a dark tone, Nina had pointless and clashing comedy forced in to it.
I thought Point of No Return with Byrne and Fonda was the first remake of it. I do have a soft spot for the tv series La Femme Nikita. It was entertaining in a slow burn way.
District B13, and getting it via Netflix (pre-streaming, when those shiny discs would ship out) really justified the service. All of a sudden you could read about smaller budget or foreign movies that might appeal to you on fringe websites (like the agony booth - where i initially found good bad flicks) and get them delivered to you.
District B13 brings me back to the old days of the Internet - I saw a gif of some amazing stunt work and hunted around and around till I finally found the movie and it was worth every minute of searching. Wasabi with Jean Reno is another really fun French action movie.
OG Shutter is SOOO good, found it on Netflix back when they were running a lot of Asian horror films, I recommend it to this day as a less known horror movie worth watching
A good follow-up to this would be a '5 Forgotten' on foreign TV shows that got terrible American remakes (either pilots or full series). Expect to find a TON of British shows among them e.g. 'Spaced', 'The IT Crowd', 'Peep Show', 'The Inbetweeners', and probably many other, lesser known, examples.
Another way to go (if you can find 5), would be American remakes of great foreign films they may have missed. My only example is Infernal Affairs, which became The Departed.
I've been trying to remember the name of the District B13 movies for years! A friend and I were just talking about it the other day. I'm so excited we can watch it again, it's been years since I've seen it but I remember both being pretty good.
Really appreciate this one. It's good to get reminded that 1) the range of films out there is wider than I sometimes think, and 2) Hollywood doesn't only mess up movies for THE MESSAGE.
In the Marine Corps, I saw a bootleg of Shutter while I was in South Korea. I knew nothing about it, nor did any of my friends, I only bought the bootleg because I was actively doing photography at the time. And that's what you did back then, buy shit based off the cover. I watched it alone and to this day, I have never been more scared watching a film. I am too old and cynical, and have seen too much to ever be that scared again. Which is why it's my personal #1 scariest film of all time. Great work Cece!
I completely understand how you feel, man! All these remakes always trying to push the originals aside! Whenever I hear about a film and there's both the original and remake, I always watch the original first and appreciate it! I hope you do another over looked originals!
Thanks for reminding me of District B-13, never noticed how much Season 1 of Arcane has parallels to its plot and the social commentary about economic class.
My Sassy Girl. 2001 Korean film absolutely rooted in Korean culture. So it got a 2008 remake in the US. Does not compare favourably. I still get flashbacks to the original whenever I hear the piano theme from the original, and the ending has me in (happy) tears every time. Why remake something that good if you can't do better? Yes, some remakes are good (The Thing, anyone) but a lot more are not.
I would argue that John Carpenter's Thing is a remake of The Thing from Another World. Carpenter's version is a lot closer to the original novella and both movies really don't have much in common, except the setting. I actually like the '51 movie for adding a scientific viewpoint, something that's missing from Carpenter's version.
Cecil should make a review in R-Point,A Korean horror film about a group of Republic of Korea Army soldiers in Vietnam who went to an abandoned building and the nightmare starts ( the shooting location in the film is the Bokor Hill Station in Cambodia )
Thanks from France ! Note that I saw taxi when it was first release in theaters, and I got a truck load of laughs. But much less from the next ones ... I think I never felt the need to see the 4th and 5th ... The other originals seem quite interesting, thanks !
In Argentina, i knew B13 and many other foreign films in the early 2000's thanks to the "tsunami" of bootleg movies sold on the streets. They were sold on many formats XviD, Divx, Avi, and usually they were sold on cd's or as 4 movies in 1 DVD deal. That way you could see movies you would never see on tv or theatres, asian horror films or chinese/hong kong action movies for example
Really appreciate your stuff. Occasionally a friend and I do a movie day when our schedules line up, and we're always looking for good _and_ bad flicks... this kind of "hey, by the way, there's an original version that didn't suck!" is super helpful!
Banlieu 13, its original title, is absolutely fkn amazing, for the exact reasons you mention, it's a truly well done, old school style action flick, as for the remake I've never seen it, but I'm inclined to trust you since we share pretty much the same taste is movies.
The Truman Show is itself likely a remake of Secret Cinema; which possibly inspired Louis the 19th, as well. I haven't seen either Louis or EdTV so I don't really know how similar they are. But Truman Show very close to the 60's film/Amazing Stories episode.
@Pelcurus, yeah, all these years, I've been thinking that EdTv was made only to cash in on the success of the Truman Show, & it turns out, it is a shitty remake of a cool French flick, that i'd never heard of.
It’s very interesting how in that span of the late ‘90s we got movies like: The Truman Show, Pleasantville, and EDtv, all of them dealing with people’s relationship with television.
Great video! 😊 I put off watching this one for a bit thinking it would all be films ive heard of. I was very wrong! I especially liked that there was a focus on foreign films that were remade. We often dont see the remakes of foreign films advertised as such so youd have no idea!
I will say that one thing the remake of One Missed Call has going for it is a very memorable movie poster. Every time I come across the poster or cover art, it catches my eye and creeps me out. That and Shannyn Sossamon have tempted me to watch it, but not enough to overcome it's terrible reputation. I will check out the original when I get the chance.
If social media is good for anything it is that when the annual threat of a remake of a beloved original gets ratioed into oblivion on Twitter or something it seems to prevent at least some of them from actually getting produced. Leave Clue alone, dudes. You'll never do it better than Tim Curry.
Definitely gonna check out that District B13 movie. Anything that can be compared to early Jackie Chan is fine by me. Having the exact same dude in the Hollywood remake but quick-cutting around his athleticism says so much about what Hollywood executives want us to like: pure sensation, not appreciating something genuinely impressive.
Thank you Cecil, for mentioning Taxi and B13 series, they are cult clasics in our area (CIS republics/Post-Soviet), espetially among generation that grew up in late 90s/early 00s, say do you know about movie Yamakasi? It is another french parkour movie.
Story wise it is little bit cheese but overall it has really good action sequences. Oh and one more check out La Haine 1995 with Vincent Cassel too it has this atmosphere similar to Trainspotting.
Great job on the video, Cecil. I was fortunate to have seen both the original "Shutter" and "One Missed Call" before the remakes were released. I gotta catch up on my French action thrillers with "District 13B" (which I may have seen) and "Taxi" (which I haven't seen yet). I will admit that I love "Ed TV", but I was unaware that it was a remake.
I feel so proud of myself that I knew 3 out of 5 of these movies. Shutter, Banlieue 13 and Taxi - I'm from Germany so French movies were more available here, I saw Taxi in FreeTV and people recommended Banlieue 13 to me after I watched Ongbak, so I rented it. Yes, with hard disc and all.
I would like to add something about a unknown movie that is bad and was about to get a remake. Lets get harry (1986) is an action movie but has barely action and mostly dialogue but its terrible however in the 2000s joel silver saw a script made by a duo which was a remake of lets get harry and the script was considered good and was well liked but unfortunately it got cancelled. I feel like a remake would be much better if they had better acting, much much better action with squibs, and make its longer and have much more action on it. The film (original) is available on tubi but dont get fool with the “action” its slow paced and the action is poorly made
Boots.. To... Re-Boots! Where's the Andies when you Need 'EM?!? At least they haven't Ruined Meatball Machine or Tokyo Ghoul... Hooray for Awesome Movies With SUBTITLES!!!
I have 3 of these on DVD, Shutter, Taxi & District 13 (yes, that's what it was called here in the UK.) Thank you Cecil for the info on Taxi being released on Blu-Ray, I hope they release Taxi 2 as my DVD has wonky subtitles.
Thought you were going to talk about the Korean drama series "Taxi" for a second there. lol That's an excellent series, by they way; it's action/revenge, and has multiple seasons. But I'll definitely be going to check out the "Taxi" movie you talked about, because it looks like a ridiculous, wild, fun time.
The British St Trinian's movies. The ones from the 50's are hilarious. The remake was.. sort of okay... This is the kind of school Wednesday Addams would have excelled in, a combination of Charles Addams and typical British girl's school. Holds up well even almost 70 years later. Watch it before the 6th form arrives!
Banlieu 13 is amazing, and worth it for the music score alone. Résistant, Cause à effect and Delinquante Musique are still on various playlists on my phone.
I love that you chose a couple of great French films. Another one where the original is amazing and the remake sucks is le diner de cons which was remade as the idiots dinner. The original is funny and so well done, like a play. I feel like I have seen Taxi (yes both the TV show and the film) as it looks familiar but it would be a long time ago if I did.
Volcano High (A Korean marital arts fantasy high school film) kind of had a remake. Sort of. It was re-dubbed with Rappers, and some key elements was changed.
Completely agree with Shutter, One Missed Call & B13 assessments...the originals. I love Takashi Miike movies... Crazy brilliant! I haven't seen the others & refuse to watch "Taxi" remake.
Taxi has also for it a killer soundtrack... French rap of the mid to late 90s ruled... Listening to some titles of the film soundtrack makes one incredibly nostalgic for that period...
district 13, not district b13. the b is short for banlieu, which is french for district. calling it district b13 is literally calling it district district 13. district 13= english, banlieu 13 (or b13)= frebch.
Cool video. Can I suggest a film for a 2nd part? The John C. Reilly / Diego Luna flop "Criminals" is vastly inferior to the original from Argentina, "9 Queens". I encourage you to check it out!
"District B13" has immediately gone on my 'watch next' list! And THANK YOU for warning me about the remake. I am not a fan of 'quick cut' action scenes, because they generally mean the actors couldn't (or didn't have time to) learn the stunt sequences. Clearly, Bell and Walker are no slouches when it comes to action choreography. Baffling.
I saw District 13 multiple times when it was hot and went to see Brick Mansions when it came out in theaters. Had no idea it's just a beat to beat remake of the original, but when the realization came, any hope and optimism jumped out of the window. Worth mentioning that the ending to the movie is different, but is just laughably braindead and insulting.
There is also a brilliant French comedy Les Visiteurs with Jean Reno about a medieval knight who travels in time to modern France - one of the best european comedy. It has 2 sequels.. and of course american remake called "Just Visiting" with Jean Reno and Malcoml McDowell but It's bad.
I just watched Taxi last week! It's pretty great. I'll have to get the blu ray. B13 is also great. Since Miike was mentioned, has anyone seen Zebraman? It's one of my top favorite superhero movies.
... Only movie channel on RUclips that would talk about the great Miike right after spending a couple of minutes explaining why _Louis 19_ is way better than _EdTV_ (which is undeniable.) This is truly for real cinephiles. Keep it up, sir. BTW, if you think that the American remake of this great French-Canadian comedy was bad... _Delivery Man_ compare to _Starbuck_ is even worst.
It seems like the 80s, and even the 90s (to an extent) understood how to make a decent remake. It feels like the late 00s was where Hollywood lost its knack. Mainly because they were shameless cash grabs, where as the 80s/90s remakes were made by directors who loved the originals and wanted to improve on them with the current day special effects of the time.
I've seen the original Shutter, and it's pretty good, very slow burn. The fact that it's from Thailand makes it even better because you get to see a whole different culture and society, not so often represented in mainstream media. The original Taxi movies were a smash hit all through Europe, until now I didn't even know that they remade them, although I can't say I'm surprised.
I watched District B13 and if you like action movies it's a go. It really does have some wild scenes. Reminds me of the action in movies like Ong Bak where you can tell they are doing the stunts and wonder how humans can do stuff like that.
Two films I think about when talking American remakes is Rec vs Quarantine. Rec is just better in every sense, plus I think Rec 2 is a sequel that’s just as good as the first. Freaking amazing films!
We only just found out about the B13 remake earlier this year when we showed the community the original. We watched the trailer for it, and... well... it seems like a definite "never needs to exist" movie.
I noticed how great the french camera guys in capturing continuous action in District 13 and Taxi. The US versions got me nauseated with shaky cams and bad dialogues
7:25 Yes!!! A very awesome film indeed I never was the biggest fan of the 2014 remake at all. 9:32 I still haven't that sequel but I do want to someday? Another awesome installment Cecil👍👍
If you're planning on doing more, you should mention Spike Lee's Oldboy remake. The only positive thing I can say about the movie is that it was different from what Spike Lee usually makes.
District B13 looks awesome and yes also sad that is Paul last movie that was released. I started watching Brick Madison before I had to work one morning and never came back to it.. not because it was bad, but life kept happening.
I did not know EdTV was a remake! Always thought it was just trying to capitalize off the success of the Truman Show. Considering it had a decent enough premise but failed in the execution, I’ll have to check out Louis 19 now. Thanks!
You don't just highlight an issue with Hollywood, you provide us with a solution!
Much appreciated!
I am so glad :)
This list should be called the Oldboy Memorial list.
The Old FATHER! “Bang” Memorial.
Honestly Cecil got me to see [REC•] instead of the awful American remake.
lol
FATHA!!
*BOOM*
Ouch. That one hurts more than I thought it would.
'District B13' and the first 'Taxi' are brilliant, can confirm.
Both original & the remake of taxi
Is good
I like chemistry comedic between queen latifah&jimmy fallon
I think that movie is one of the gender swap remake movie that good
Thank Luc Besson for that
_Taxi_ and _Taxi 2_ are classics nowadays - hands down, some of the funniest flicks Besson ever wrote.
... 3 and 4, though, are utter garbage.
_B13_ ? Another classic. I know why they made a sequel to it (money), but, it was so subpar, they shouldn't have even bother.
Luc can be a heck of a writer/director... but, when he misses, he misses EGREGIOUSLY.
Very much agree,
Back when seeing "Luc Besson" on the DVD cover was exciting
So great to see love for District B13. Love that flick!!!
Amazing movie!
Finally. Someone using 'overlooked' as opposed to 'underrated'!
Apt descriptions for all of these. Good call out!
Hope he does an episode on 5 bad films that *DO* deserve a remake.
So many missed opportunities...

I would go see Steven Spielberg's "Freddy Got Fingered".

It's about a television technician, after he receives an electric shock, he becomes the victim of a strange phenomenon and his image starts to occupy all TV channels, 24 hours a day, interfering in people's lives and behavior.
Takashi Miike went fully insane with The Happiness of the Katakuris. Think The Sound of Music, but with zombies. And claymation. And musical numbers.
Happiness of the Katakuris was the first Miike film I ever saw. It is a glorious WTF.
@@saralehmann5679 It was the *second* Miike movie I saw. The first was Audition.
The Sound of Music with zombies and claymation I can imagine. But musical numbers? Now you've lost me.
And this is a remake of Kim Jee-woon's The Quiet Family from 1998
Its funny how him going bonkers is sooooo much more bonkers than anyone else.
I always think of the movie The Vanishing. The Dutch original had one of the most shocking final acts I've ever seen - which was completely neutered in the US remake to give it a bad happy ending.

100%
I didn't really like either version...
Good on you for mentioning "Shutter". I liked it back then, was genuinely creepy and man, the "neck pain". 😢
That ending was so good!
Please do more videos like these! These foreign movies look amazing. And you researching if they have any physical media in America was also helpful.
More to come but I'll space them out.
District B13 was a totally epic flick, I randomly ran across it a while back and loved it!
Cecil ragging on Matthew McConaughey brings back old memories of his classic reviews.
I actually like EDtv though
I think he's a great actor! Just funny how he always gets roles as the "everyman". Alright, alright, alright!
@@GoodBadFlicks What did you think of EDtv btw?
@@billymountiii5788 I liked EDTV, kind of wonder why we don't have something like this?
Will never bear astronaut/farmer in Interstellar. (One of my favorite movies

Hollywood rarely tops the originals. The only time they made a film that equals the original is The Magnificent Seven.
District B13 also had one of the coolest soundtracks that matched so well with the camera and stunt work.

I thought the remake was decent
I was gonna say “let me in” was a decent remake of a foreign film, while not nearly as great it was still watchable.
D-13B still so damn amazing. It's THE parkour movie to spoof. I'm looking at you American Dad.
@7:24 what a fantastic film. Discovered it out of nowhere on tv one day. I think ifc played it at one point. It’s absolutely nuts and I love it.
I'd love to see a review of the two versions of Funny Games, made by the same director.
It’s pretty much the same movie just with two different casts and of course in 2 different languages. They are both quite good
I police officer from B13 was smaller martial arts brothers from the Jet Li film KISS OF THE DRAGON. Which was why I first saw it.
the fight scene of him and his big brother vs Jet Li was great.

I gotta catch up on my French action thrillers with "District 13B" (which I may have seen) and "Taxi" (which I haven't seen yet). I will admit that I love "Ed TV", but I was unaware that it was a remake.
Thanks!
Good choices! Ong Bak is grand, really love The Protector too.
YESSS! Thank you for making the case for TAXI! Between TAXI and DISTRICT B13, I thought you were making a case for French cinema, lol
You are welcome! I probably could do plenty on French cinema :)
the original Taxi was huge when first showed on Russian TV back in the day. everyone was obsessed by everything with Luc Besson attached to it
A couple of bad US remakes of UK movies I would lie to suggest, School for Scoundrels, The Ladykillers and Bedazzled.
Unanimously agree
I imagine if they did 1 I'm hoping the sequels follow
Ah, Yes. Jimmy Fallon...The benchmark of quality.
LMFAO, yeah, & i remember, one of my classmates actually liked that piece of shit movie, (Taxi 2004). Had no idea it was a remake, at the time.
lol
I only known Taxi from this list. Watched unwittingly on my friend TV via pirated VCD. I was glued to my seat till the end lemme tell you.
The original shutter is so amazing
The British St Trinian's movies. The ones from the 50's are hilarious. The remake was.. sort of okay...
This is the kind of school Wednesday Addams would have excelled in, a combination of Charles Addams and typical British girl's school. Holds up well even almost 70 years later.
Watch it before the 6th form arrives!
Good movie. Anything with Alistair Sim is worth watching.
District B13 was something I remember buying on DVD on release day to watch with my roommate. I totally forgot they did a remake.
Banlieu 13 is amazing, and worth it for the music score alone. Résistant, Cause à effect and Delinquante Musique are still on various playlists on my phone.
Great stuff. Got to look into some of these.
Thanks!
A Tale of Two Sisters > The Uninvited
Abre los Ojos > Vanilla Sky
Infernal Affairs > The Departed
Let the Right One In > Let Me In
Rec > Quarantine
They think by changing the name they can fool audiences.
Miike is a quintessential film library.
@@thecinematicmind agreed, terrific films.
Taxi has also for it a killer soundtrack... French rap of the mid to late 90s ruled... Listening to some titles of the film soundtrack makes one incredibly nostalgic for that period...
district 13, not district b13.
the b is short for banlieu, which is french for district. calling it district b13 is literally calling it district district 13.
district 13= english, banlieu 13 (or b13)= frebch.
district 13 also had great music.... and the sequel has cyril in drag...
Probably just as well that remake of Train to Busan never happened.
Cool video. Can I suggest a film for a 2nd part? The John C. Reilly / Diego Luna flop "Criminals" is vastly inferior to the original from Argentina, "9 Queens". I encourage you to check it out!
Will do!
Thanks for broadening our horizon!
You are welcome!
I forgot ALL about Brick Mansions. I was hyped for it since I loved District B13, but it was so horrible I blocked it out.
I just watched Taxi tonight. I've been waiting for this movie for years. Amazon Prime
No. Parkour was not made by David Belle. He just popularized it.
I thought parkour was made by Michael Scott.
My friends told me about Shutter the OG one and remake years ago, still haven’t checked it out.
At 10:04, hot damn I got to watch Taxi in Highschool French class and loved it! I only saw enough of the remake to know I did not want to see it...
I just watched Taxi last week! It's pretty great. I'll have to get the blu ray. B13 is also great. Since Miike was mentioned, has anyone seen Zebraman? It's one of my top favorite superhero movies.
... Only movie channel on RUclips that would talk about the great Miike right after spending a couple of minutes explaining why _Louis 19_ is way better than _EdTV_ (which is undeniable.)
This is truly for real cinephiles. Keep it up, sir.
BTW, if you think that the American remake of this great French-Canadian comedy was bad... _Delivery Man_ compare to _Starbuck_ is even worst.
Thank you! I'll check out Starbuck!
All good suggestions! Great video.
Thanks!
I've always referred to the American remake of One Missed Call as "One Missed Point."
Nice
lol love it!
Argute.
Shutter (2004) is amazing. It's probably my favourite Asian horror, maybe even horror movie in general
You just went over a lot of the movies of my teenage years.
:)
After watching District 13 tried to do parkour, almost broke my neck :D
Thats why I leave it to the professionals.
Its so bad by comparison.
Thanks!
Very appreciated video, Cecil.
:)
If you're planning on doing more, you should mention Spike Lee's Oldboy remake. The only positive thing I can say about the movie is that it was different from what Spike Lee usually makes.
I actually love the remake of taxi. Didn't know it was a remake. It made me laugh hard, especially the scene with gas.
To each their own :)
District B13 looks awesome and yes also sad that is Paul last movie that was released. I started watching Brick Madison before I had to work one morning and never came back to it.. not because it was bad, but life kept happening.
District B13 is worth your time, excellent film.
I did not know EdTV was a remake! Always thought it was just trying to capitalize off the success of the Truman Show. Considering it had a decent enough premise but failed in the execution, I’ll have to check out Louis 19 now. Thanks!
