Ayreon is Arjen Anthony Luckassen. He is the tall hippy hermit wizard of Oudenbosch and together with faithfull friends of his like, Sir Joost van den Broek on keyboards, Ed Warby on drums and a lot of guests makes the greatest of prog-music.
A great song to get into Ayreon is "The Day That The World Broke Down".
Welcome to the rabbit hole that is European Symphonic metal and other styles like that.
great songs to check this music out are
    - Ghost Love Score by Nightwish live at Wacken 2013
    - Skeleton Key by Epica
    - Call of the Mountains by Eluveite
Hope you find your way home, Alice SoGal

This concert was probably the best concert I went to in 2019. It features so much more than this masterpiece, and doing a reaction on just this is like doing a reaction on an episode of Star trek halfway through a season when you have no clue what's going on. Watch the rest of the show in the correct order to truly get the most out of this.

I would say this is prog metal and sabaton is pretty much straightforward power metal (european, with more keyboards than american one for example), so they are quite in different music circles.
Every Ayreon album is conceptual with some history, and all of them are set in the same universe. That's the reason for the costumes and everything. So typically, Arjen composes the music and then gets different musicians to play on it, assembling an all star team. Every singer is a different character on the story.
It's an awesome rabbit hole to dive in, an amazing musical journey.
As a next song I would recommend Day two: Isolation live from the Theater Equation. That's from the album The Human Equation, which is about a man that is laying on the hospital after suffering a car accident. Every song is a day in the comma and every singer is an emotion. So you have love, pain, rage, and so on. It's and amazing album and I think one of the best prog metal albums of all time

There is an indirect connection between Sabaton and Arjen Ayreon Lucassen and that is the fact that the drummer of Sabaton is married to Floor Jansen, leadsinger of Nightwish and regular guest on Ayreon albums.

    From wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Into_the_Electric_Castle#Plot
The story begins with a strange voice (Peter Daltrey) calling out to the eight characters that are taken from various planes of time. The mysterious voice tells them they are in a place of "no-time and no-space". Urging them to continue, the voice gives them a task: to reach The Electric Castle and find out what's inside.
After various steps, they come to the Decision Tree where the voice tells them one of them must die. They must then go through the Tunnel of Light, but the Highlander (Fish) refuses to reach the light, stays behind, accepts his death slowly, and lays himself down to die while the others continue. Then in the Garden of Emotions, the Egyptian (Anneke van Giersbergen), overwhelmed by her emotions, becomes convinced that Amon-Ra is coming to seal her fate.[3] She loses her will to continue and wanders alone until she lays herself down and dies as well.[4]
The surviving characters finally reach the Electric Castle, penetrating the Castle Hall. On the Tower of Hope a breeze draws the attention of the Indian (Sharon den Adel), luring her away towards the sun despite the warning of the Knight (Damian Wilson) and the Futureman (Edward Reekers). On the breeze, she encounters Death itself (George Oosthoek and Robert Westerholt) who takes her while she screams.
The characters then come to their final test: the voice tells them that beyond them stand two gates, with one of them leading to oblivion and the second to the desired time of the heroes. One of the gates is old, deteriorated, and ugly, and the other made of gold and appears at first glance to be paradise. The Barbarian (Jay van Feggelen), in his arrogance and pride, walks through the golden gate in spite of his companion's choice, and falls into oblivion forever.
Finally, the Knight, the Roman (Edwin Balogh), the Hippie (Arjen Anthony Lucassen) and the Futureman, who had chosen the right gate, discover the true nature of the voice: it is called "Forever of the Stars", and claims that its kind is an alien race who lost all emotions. It also claims its kind caused the emergence of humanity on Earth, and that the eight heroes were in an experiment in understanding and/or rediscovering emotions. Feeling tired, the voice tells them to go on ahead and open the door, and that they won't remember what has happened.
Back in their real time, the heroes all wonder what has happened, with the Hippie asking himself if this journey was the result of his drug abuse, the Futureman wondering if his memory has been erased, the Roman feeling stronger and the Knight thinking he found the Grail in a magic dream. The voice of the Forever of the Stars is then heard, asking them all to remember Forever.

Oh, I'm so happily surprised right now! I've seen some of your football reactions, and it was always very interesting and entertaining, but I didn't even know that you do music reactions as well. And look how I came to discover it... finding your reaction to one of my top 3 favorite "bands" ever.
As you probably already figured out from researching, Into the Electric Castle is not just a regular album, it's a story. Each singer represents a character and each song is a piece of the adventure. Basically, eight people from different civilizations and eras are transported to this strange world where a mysterious voice leads them by saying that the only way they can survive and return to their original worlds is following his instructions.
I'm sure that loads of people will suggest you "The day that the world breaks down", but if I may go against the odds and the cliche, I'd love to see you listening to the song "Isis and Osiris" from that same concert. It has those special theatrical elements, and as it's also part of the Electric Castle journey, it will give you some more content in that story. In some way I feel that jumping to another album, with another story, before going deep into the Electric Castle could be too overwhelming and kinda mess with the experience.
    Cheers from Brazil! 🇧🇷

Oh God, yes!!! You are reacting to Ayreon, one of the projects of mad genius Arjen Anthony Lucassen! (He is literally one of the nicest guys in the world, and has been known to occasionally show up in the comments section of RUclips reactors.) I highly, HIGHLY recommend you react to the video "The Day That The World Breaks Down". It is Arjen's pick for representing the sound of one of his albums and features 11 singers (from the top tier of the world's Symphonic Metal singers) plus his usual instrumental collborators. The video contains his text based commentary on anything relevant to the recording and performance. You WILL want to react to more of his songs, to get a feel for his range check out "Valley Of The Queens" with 3 superb female voices, flute and cello. Ayreon is largely Sci Fi focussed and features songs from different Sci Fi properties like Stargate ("The Eye of Ra") or old British TV show Blake's 7 ("Intergalactic Space Crusaders")

What was kind of interesting to me is that the way that the different characters "talk" to one is heavily dependent on their perspective and the things they were familiar with in their time and place in history. It does make it confusing to follow along. Especially on the first listen, without lyrics and just hopping into a story somewhere.
Ayreon tells tall tales, like an audiobook series. Every album is a tale on its own, but most (if not all) of them tie together into a universe with a rich past, future, other dimensions like this Electric Castle and the human mind (in The Human Equation).
As others have suggested The Day That The World Breaks Down already as a good starting point to get into the story and some context around the project, I'd like to mention that there have only been two live shows to date. The one you've just seen is the only one that tells a complete story. The other (Universe Live) is a Best Of show, which is a good place to get a glimpse of how wide the range in talent, instruments and music styles can be.
You have a fantastical journey ahead, many layers to discover. There are dangers ahead, but do not be afraid, for Arjen is an excellent tour guide in this landscape of sound.
I've been listening for at least two decades and still find hidden layers and new perspectives. For me, these are the ultimate bedtime stories.

  • @xorsyst1

Didn't expect to see Ayreon on your channel! This story of this album is roughly that some future space intelligence (the narrator at the start) has summoned 8 characters from various periods of history and set them on a quest to explore the electric castle.
The album is 20 years old or so, but the production is only a couple of years ago. It was a run of 4 shows in one theatre only, Ayreon is really hard to put on live as you can imagine!
Next suggestion - if you like SciFi, go for "The day the world breaks down" from the 2017 Album "The Source".

I'm watching many reactions channels. Almost all reactors from US are totally shock how low level of American music is compare to European. They are pretty mad for the music they have to listening in mainstream radio stations, Take a look for most popular bands in reaction channels. Nightwish, Epica (few members of this bands are in Ayreon Project), Rammstein. They are most popular in there with most viewers. They are also huge rabbit holes with very interesting history and relations between them (E.g. Nightwish and Epica, Nightwish and Sabaton). And the most important thing: musically they are amazing. Quality of sound and singing during their live concerts are much better then most of pop "stars" hits produced in records studios (and there is no lip sync or even Auto Tune). I hope this is just the beginning of your European music journey. Believe me you will be delighted. Thumb up and sub. All the best and see you soon.

Arjen is singing as well. Well aren't you the lucky one!
He is doing the role of the "hippie" and sogal says, he is dressed as a true hippie. So Succes on that one :)
I will take a stab at trying to explain Ayreon.
Basicly the "hippie" Known as Arjen Lucassen is a singer songwriter producer(I think) that guess what, writes music... He started one of his projects known as Ayreon, in this project he writes music and have different singer's come in and perform roles in the entire record, so the record with all its song tells a story. The guest singers very from extremly known to winning a competetition he himself set up to promote a singer. This is only the second live perfomance that Arjen himself have produced with Ayreon (he said it was impossible to pull off, but if anyone wanted to try there where allowed to, and thus a musical was perfomrmed and since then Arjen have done two). This specific live show is from his album The Electric Castle that had a twenty year annerversity.
All albums in the Ayreon project are in the same universe and most of them closly connected.
It is basicly all Sci fi, groove operatic metal ?? Or prog (progressive) music.
Sadly Arjen have a bit of stage fright and is rarly seen on stage but work in the background instead.
If you ever have problem with copyright reasons you can contact Arjen himself about it, as he have helped many other youtubers to react to his music.
Jumping in to a song in a middle of the story(album) is always a bit strange, like watching 10 min in the middle of a movie and nothing else.
Ayreon - The Day That The World Breaks Down - The Source (2017) is the song that he is the most happy about himself. He also writes comments about the song and musicians at the buttom as it goes along. It is the first song of The source, it is a song that is rather comon to react to.
I personally don't think you can go wrong with really any of his music.
There is a youtube channel name Taycott that have written lyrics and shows who is singing on all the albums, if you want the actual story this is what I suggest to use, they are amazing and well done. Thanks for your reaction Sogal. Keep up the great work.

Well, the whole album 'Into the Electric Castle' is one big space opera where 8 people, a Scottish highlander, an Egyptian, an Indian, a Roman, a knight, a hippie, a barbarian and the future man are plucked by 'forever of the stars', the voice, from their own time and space and dumped on a place completely alien to them.
They are tasked to just go... and after some introduction songs, the voice just states that from then on, only 7 can continue... and one of them dies in the tunnel of light.
After crossing the rainbow bridge, they enter the garden of emotions, the portal to the Electric Castle where the hippie has a trip, the Egyptian fears death, the Roman and Barbarian have a quarrel and the future man has the wisdom to get through it all.
Through the castle hall, the mirror maze and the tower of hope, they eventually get at 2 doors: one will allow them to fulfill their quest and go back to their own space and time and one door will lead to oblivion.
After this, the voice declares himself as 'forever of the stars', a being so ancient that he, and his people with him, lost all emotions, and he put the 8 people through all this just to experience emotions again (very Q like... Arjen actually admitted that Q was his inspiration for this part and that is also why John DeLancie was cast as the voice)
The surviving adventurers are then brought back to their own time and space.
That is the basic synopsis of the album. And because it is a space opera, it certainly lends itself for this kind of theatrical performance.

It consists a two CDs, one is the Gentle version, and the other is the Storm version, which is the heavier version. Feel free to try it out :-)

Ayreon is great. Each album is a different story, usually centered around a sci-fi theme (and usually as another chapter in the same storyline regarding The Forever, an ancient alien race that created humanity to re-experience emotions). Sometimes though an album will be something entirely different and unrelated. Each singer plays a different character and each song is a progression through the story from beginning to end. A true rock/prog/metal opera. The mastermind is Arjen Lucassen who writes all the music, lyrics, and plays many of the instruments but also brings onboard many guest musicians and singers from sometimes famous sometimes unknown bands to create something truly epic. Highly recommend you check all the albums out over time.

Ayreon is a symphonic progressive rock opera concept featuring loads of singers and instrumentalists from many very famous bands. The story goes like "a signal is sent back in time to warn humanity of impending decline, and each album in the Ayreon concept follows a receiver of this signal and their support characters. The first album's main character was Ayreon". For the stage shows, this is mixed with other concepts to produce the best possible shows, and can even feature a changed story sung based on who has to sing the lyrics. Arjen was also a great inspiration to Nightwish. Arjen himself is very influenced by old school progressive rock bands like Rush like you picked up on.

This song is from the album Into the Electric Castle. Eight people from different timelines end up in a world where time and space do not play a role. A strange voice instructs them to reach and discover the Electric Castle from within.
The album opens with a voice from the sky announcing to the eight characters (the Highlander, the Hippie, the Futureman, the Indian, the Egyptian, the Barbarian, the Knight, and the Roman) that they have been taken to the "cranial vistas of psychogenesis," a mysterious non-place in a non-time. The voice commands the eight to seek out and enter the Electric Castle, and warns that they will be challenged with puzzles and tests of mettle.
Many of the eight believe they have all been taken to the afterlife (a demon-created realm, a "dark and evil jest," Avalon, the great hall of Isis and Osiris, or the underworld). The Highlander voices concern that they will be lost, since none of them can recognise the constellations. However, the group takes flight into the cosmic realm, the Barbarian shouting of his courage and battle-worthiness and the exhilarated Hippie delighting at the marvels as they do so.
The Futureman, unsettled because even his advanced learning cannot explain what has happened, ruminates about the nature of their mystic surroundings, concluding that they must be trapped in a cyberworld; the Knight, confused by the Futureman's speech, repeats his conviction that they are in Avalon, the isle of spirits, on a quest for the Holy Grail. The Roman rejects both of these explanations, fearing they are in the underworld and should seek to escape to Elysium.
At last, the eight arrive before the Decision Tree, where they are praised for their fortitude but also told that one of them must die before they continue. The Barbarian and the Highlander boast to each other of their accomplishments in battle, and both deny that they will be the ones to die. However, the Highlander's prediction does not play out. He loses his will to go on, lies down, and dies, just as the others leap into the Tunnel of Light, believing themselves now to be entering heaven. Before they reach the Electric Castle, they must cross the Rainbow Bridge, which spans a sea of tears and fiery brine.
The Rainbow Bridge leads the seven travellers to the Garden of Emotions, which stands before the Electric Castle. The Hippie calls the Garden "groovy," but the Egyptian senses that Amon-ra has chosen to seal her fate and end her life there. The Roman and the Barbarian contend for leadership of the group, becoming enraged and fighting before the Futureman realises that the Garden is amplifying their emotions, warning everyone that they must control their aggression. The Indian, meanwhile, prophesies that voices in the sky shall destroy their souls. The Egyptian finds her spirit broken in the Garden, and, overwhelmed by her emotions, lies down to die in the same manner as the Highlander.
The remaining travellers finally enter the Electric Castle, finding themselves in the great hall. There they are tested by the Gathering of the Spirits, as the killers among them (the Knight and the Barbarian) are tormented by the incarnate spirits of those they have killed. They survive, and climb the stairs to the Tower of Hope, still full of wonder about their dreamlike journey. At the pinnacle of the Tower, a breeze draws the attention of the Indian. Despite the others' warnings, she is swept up by the wind, believing she will be taken to the sun and her soul made one with the universe. The wind is revealed to be Death itself, and the Indian is cast into oblivion, screaming as she dies.
The travellers, now five, continue to find themselves in the Mirror Maze, a world in which each of them must confront their ego-self. The Hippie is shown reflections of scenes from his childhood and adolescence while the Futureman contemplates the nature of fear and how humans bury it and their traumatic pasts inside themselves. The Roman shows signs that he has given up hope, but the Knight steels his resolve and breaks through the mirror, freeing them all to pass through. The travellers witness a vision of the future - a strange cyber brain which the Futureman calls a mutation of the human race - and are then presented with two gates by the voice from the skies. One is old and battered and the other golden, and one leads to freedom while the other leads to Oblivion. The Barbarian boldly strides through the golden gate, only to be cast into Oblivion and die; the final travellers successfully pass through the other gate. Before they return to their homes, the voice of Forever of the Stars explains that their ordeal has been part of an experiment for the Forever race to rediscover their lost emotions.
Forever of the Stars tells the final four travellers that they will not remember their experience. When they awaken in their respective times and places, the Hippie believes he was on a particularly convincing psychedelic trip, the Futureman believes his memory has been wiped, the Roman thinks himself reborn, and the Knight thinks he has found the grail within a dream. A fading voice asks them to all remember Forever.

Don't know this band. What sprang to my mind was Rick Wakeman doing The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the round table. Keyboard wizzard he did it as a stage show in the 70s. Don't know if there is a film of it, I have the album in my collection. Themed rock music was quite big back then. The Who did Tommy. Jeff Wayne did War of the world's. Loads of others.
Check out Rick Wakeman his music is more accessible.
English is regarded as cool on the continent, it's the language of rock, but they do do a lot of stuff in their native languages, but unless it's catchy musically, it doesn't often spread beyond its borders.

You have to realise that Ayreon is not a 'Band', it is Arjen's project and he invites the best musicians and vocalists from around the world to participate and then writes parts for them, so everyone is perfect for their role. The singers come from all over the world, not just Europe.
To understand the 'Garden of Emotion', you need to hear the whole album, as it is a story from 1st track to last. Arjen writes mainly concept albums, which are a full story. On concept albums you can't just pick a song and expect to understand what is happening, you need to understand the full story, for it all to make sense.
Ayreon is Prog Rock mixed with Space Metal and AMAZING

My answer to why English is spoken by European bands is that England had most of the originators of prog rock in the 70s and to make it big in the UK/US market it is wise to speak in English. Rush became increasingly influenced by bands of the British progressive rock movement of the mid-1970s, especially Genesis, Yes, and Jethro Tull. In the tradition of progressive rock, Rush wrote extended songs with irregular and shifting time signatures, combined with fantasy and science fiction-themed lyrics. In the 1980s, Rush merged their sound with the trends of this period, experimenting with new wave, reggae, and pop rock. This period included the band's most extensive use of instruments such as synthesizers, sequencers, and electronic percussion. In the early 1990s, the band transformed their style once again to return to a more grounded hard rock style and simultaneously harmonize with the alternative rock movement.

Asking if they are related to Sabaton is like asking the definition of related.
Arjen Lucassen had a band (star one) where Floor Jansen was a backing vocal singer. She also features a lot in the music of Ayreon as a main singer. Currently she is the frontwoman of Nightwish. Biggest band in Finland.
She lives in Sweden with her husband Hannes van Dahl, the drummer of Sabaton.
Are they related? I guess so

@@arjansnoek7257 True! Musicians listen to others music and usually think: I can do it better my way. They gather some like minded friends and start a new band. Music is a continuum from the first beat of a stick to a hollow tree to what we will hear in the future.
The world of music is far more open and connected than some people think.
Public, listeners to music, have a far more tension to isolation, limit their horizon, and be selective on what they like, not opening up to other cultures or out of the box projects.
Especially in the US this isolation from the rest of the world is strong, culturally, politically, scientifically, they do not realize that there is good, better, stuff outside of their country.

There is a lot of putting down American music here, but you likely don't get Aryeon without Dream Theater. The original progressive metal bands were American. And the concept album/storylines was previously done by Queensryche. And Dream Theater's Scenes From A Memory tells as elaborate a story as any single Ayreon album, although not as elaborate as all of the interconnected Aryeon albums combined.
It's true that most Symphonic metal comes from Europe, especially Northern European countries, but Ayreon has made use of singers from a number of American heavy metal bands, including, of course James Labrie from Dream Theater.

I know both and like both. Most people are reacting with a big surprise to European music. That's only because, it is a fact that in The States the radiostations aren't that open-minded towards music that is coming from outside the States. It is a pitty because, to me personally music United's. Since I like both and I know the way they make music is a bit different. I love how they respect each others music.

    This is progressive/Symphonic metal/metal opera.
Ayreon is my third favorite band after Pink Floyd and Nightwish.
The narrator you saw played Q in Star Trek.
The first singer is Arjen Lucassen
They are dressed like the characters they play on the concept album: into the electric castle.
Most reviewers start with The day that the world brakes down. A great song to get familiar with Ayreon.
Look for songs from both live concerts:
    Ayreon Universe live
The electric castle live and other tales.
    Ayreon is pronounced as airreon.
See Wikipedia for everything you want to know about Ayreon.

    About this Castle-Thing's...
It's just not really about the European History at all.
It has more to do with Arjen Anthony Lucassen's Studio which is called : "The Electric Castle".
Where has recorded the most of his Music.
    And he has lived in
And of course it's about the Stories and Lyrics tough.
    Btw...
The third Album : Into The Electric Castle is one of the greatest Albums ever made.
    I would give a 9.735 rate out of 10!
The Reissue of this Album is also UNBELIEVABLE good.
    I would give it a9.835 from 10!

Hi SoGal! The answer is yes! The drummer of Sabaton (Johanes) is married to Floor Jansen who is probably the most highly regarded singer in the Symphonic Rock genre. She has worked extensively on Ayreon projects, although is not featured here due to commitments as lead singer of Nightwish. I can't believe that having followed you because of your historical and football videros, you have crossed-over into my world with this!! Amazing.

As far as I have understood, the Electric Castle was a side project later introduced into the Ayreon sequence. After the complete destruction of life on earth in 2084 the immortal Forever, who once set up humanity on earth to obtain genuine emotions (which they lost) randomly recreated characters from the earth's past. Then those characters were set into a contest on life or death. There were eight of them gathered: The highlander, the barbarian, the roman, the knight, the hippie and the futureman are the males, the egyptian and the indian are the females. You hear the egytian sing to Amon Ra. Also Arjen Lucassen himself appears as the hippie... Four of them, including the females do not survive. The egyptian is so disappointed that she only wants to die, as she sings in the Valley of the Queens.. Not so history, science fiction instead.
