What's most terrifying to me is that platforms like TikTok and Twitter are not meant to be useful--just to occupy your attention for as long as possible (to serve ads). And the most effective ways to do that are to numb you or to radicalize you. Media literacy is such a crucial skill for us to learn.
Yeah but it's the same for RUclips and basically any other 'free' media, even (commercial) TV. I agree that it's not ideal (and I'm grateful that in Germany we have public service RUclips channels financed by license fees with educational mandate that are still entertaining) buuuut just because the platforms don't give a shit about quality doesn't mean there aren't creators doing their best to give their audiences something of value. But yeah of course we need media literacy to navigate the jungle of content successfully and find these creators. It's much easier to just passively let the algorithm pull you into another rabbit hole.
don't agree about Twitter to be honest! my experience with it shows that it really helps to make friends and acquaintances more easily. i was very socially awkward before using it, and the platform helped me to communicate casually, easily start conversations with strangers and not be scared/intimidated by unfamiliar people. and Twitter is based on communication, it is the core and purpose of the app. you won't spend hours on it just consuming content without interacting with anyone, like you can do on TikTok or RUclips. idk, just my opinion 👁️👃👁️
I don't think TikTok CAN be useful, with how it's based on using an algorithm to serve content with automatically, whereas on a platform like RUclips you can search for what you want/need and decide what you'll watch. Even if TikTok gives you, say, educational content you learn from, being short-form minimizes what you'll meaningfully learn, and the automated feed makes wrong information easier to spread and harder to correct.

thanks for actually making thought provoking videos that (hopefully) encourages people to examine their media usage and actually consider what theyre putting out into the world, also i genuinely adore the way youve (presumably) written the scripts for dystopia daily! everything youve said has been so well thought out and worded and its been really fun to see your artistic vision come to life now that you have a full team behind you
The fact that his video on tiktok has double the likes than the views of this youtube video is terrifying.
He becomes more unhinged with each episode and I love it.
i'm so happy you're back. I'm almost 31 and started watching you at 19. Your videos have always been a source of comfort and entretainment and insightful commentary.
“short, snackable, and vertical” is quite honestly how I’d describe Dan
😂
Ma’am are you aware of his towering hight at all?
My personal solution for all this is to just be too depressed to participate in social media entirely (No I do not recommend it)
Also, those random moments where it's just Dan with a blank green screen are such a vibe. Thank you for this show
Dan is so unhinged but honest and funny. I missed his content greatly and the little 14 year old me from years ago is excited to watch his videos again.
This is giving perfectionist. It’s like at a certain point you can’t just casually decide to start a tiktok, it has to be this whole announcement and explanation otherwise it won’t get the attention it deserves. I feel you Dan. I don’t have tiktok tho srry lol
that transition from Dan in video to Dan in editing was TikTok perfection tbh
realizing how much i look up to dan and how much him and phil have shaped my personality - older brother dan 🥺
These are the kinds of takes that always have me engaged to this channel. I'm on TikTok way too much and it's dangerous. We all needed a reality check lol
I've simply reached the age (23) where I'm too old to keep up with the new Internet things. And I don't need another app to waste time on. I keep thinking about all the ways I could be improving myself and instead I scroll through Instagram and Twitter, getting angry at things
I love how this was basically a 15 minute ad for Dan’s TikTok account
It's weird with Dan confirming that Phil just lets all the apps have his data and stuff but not really that surprising tho lmfao
I don't go on tiktok often, but I opened it to follow you and now I'm still stuck there 30 minutes later 💀 thanks Dan
As another "caught between the generations " person, this whole thing speaks to my soul.
I was young, cool, and hip once (I totally wasn't hip or cool) but now, at the grand age of 32, I have just accepted my fate as "well shit..... I'm old now" and I await the day where I start using my forefinger on my phone screen, and get a phone cover that opens like a book. It's inevitable.
I have tiktok. Its SO BLOODY NOISY AND NON STOP AND I HATE IT BUT IT ALSO IS THE GIVER OF DOPAMINE. Urgh.
Ps. You're bloody brilliant and I've been a quiet watcher of your videos since pretty much the beginning. Where it all began. Kids these days just don't understand.
Peace and love. X
As a tiktok creator I completely agree. I've stopped doing daily videos for my own sanity and those of my viewers
Dan, I never had a dad, (single mom) so I always refer to you and Phil as my father's. I've been watching you guys for about 10/11 years and have watched you to get me through my worst times and make the best times even better. Thank you and Phil for existing, it's made the world's difference in my life ❤️ (also now I'm 20 years old how do i survive my 20s in college-)
Can confirm - I get nothing done and suffer from continuous FOMO after I gave in and downloaded Tiktok
proud of being part of the resistance, I am so fucking proud of never having downloaded it
I really loved this video. It feels like some of your old videos mixed with the more updated video essay format
What I love is how it's clear Dan and Phil raised a generation. Like you can see their impact on us, our humour etc.
I actually feel terrible because once I downloaded TikTok I couldn't stop like I've tried to uninstall it multiple times and I just can't
That's exactly why I never started TikTok
Lmao tiktok, the heroin of the 21st century
I thought I might get too addicted to it but I end up watching tiktok only at times I´m too bored and don´t have time for longer things. I literally have no desire to watch it when I have more free time.
I just uninstall it hopefully I'll go to my opium instead of redownloading in future lol
i’ve just uninstalled it as i’m trying to get my attention span to be longer again, im already struggling lol
also just wanted to take the time to comment that i really appreciate dan and his content, and i'm always looking forward to the next video that he posts (regardless of the time between uploads). either way, glad to see he's more active nowadays
I'm still not over the fact Dan is actually uploading fairly frequently. 😱
Can we just talk about Editing Dan’s nails. Not the fact he’s wearing nail polish. But it’s BRIGHT YELLOW
God THANK YOU for dragging Instagram, this year has been my worst experience on the platform ever and I started realizing what was going on when so much of what I saw was product ads and reels from accounts I didn’t even follow. Terrible year for me to start a secondary account to host my art.
I think there's a feature to only see the following accounts on your feed (but the discovery explorer thingy gets me scrolling forever anyway)
Dan!! I saw your show last night and I just wanted to say it was truly SPECTACULAR!!! 🎉❤
dans reaction to his phone being taken is so relatable what- i’m also very glad i don’t have tiktok lmfao 😭
TikTok has me scared to leave my damn house.
Never thought that in 2022 Daniel Howell would be uploading regularly and downloading TikTok, love to see it. So glad your back Dan, the internet got worse but your humor is always refreshing.
- my reaction to most tiktoks i get sent is "this could have been a tweet but it is a video with someone's face and i have to PAUSE TO READ IT BECAUSE OF COURSE THERE'S ALSO MUSIC PLAYING OR WORSE SOME DIALOGUE???"
- that ending scream made my week thanks
Im so glad he is posting again. And this just makes me even more excited to see him in November
Thank you Dan for affirming my choice to never use TikTok
Edit: nevermind Dan getting TikTok is very much tempting, I really hope he doesn't post a lot so I can still feel confident not getting it,,, I guess I could watch youtube compilations
alternate title: dan undergoing five stages of grief before joining tiktok
TEEN WOLF IS BACK, TUMBLR IS BEING USED AGAIN BECAUSE TWITTER SUCKS, DAN HOWELL IS MAKING RUclips VIDEOS AGAIN AND 2014 TORY IS LIVING FOR EVERY BIT OF IT!!
"Tumblr is being used again" hmm sis. We never left.
I'm just happy someone finally had the guts to say it. Thank you Dan
i’m almost 30 and the first lockdown definitely is the reason i’m on tiktok. i can’t stop now. i can’t.
same, I was happy to be able to post videos but when you're stuck watching them it's a whole other thing
i’ve kind of gone back to looking for longer content on youtube rather than defaulting to tiktok for entertainment
not dan discovering thirst traps and being like "what is the point of this"
This felt like the most Dan video we’ve had in a very long time. Love it
nooo I’ve gone all this time resisting the temptation to download it but now I’m gonna have to aren’t I??? Thanks for bringing even more procrastination into my life Dan xo
Don’t do it
He's really challenging my resistance to TikTok by making an account a lot
NOOOOOOOOOOO
Every time Dan has an opinion I realize I already had the same opinion and he just explains it better than I can to myself. Thanks Dan, you're a real hero, keep doing what you're doing! :)
No one makes me cackle like Dan my roommates must be so annoyed that’s he’s uploading regularly again
I think this is probably my new favorite video of Dan's. I'm living for the chaotic energy and humor.
I despise TikTok with my entire being. I will not bend until I break; it's not my identity
Thank you Daniel
Congratulations for being first.
