I have to give kudos to the recently deceased Robert Towne, who co-wrote this film's script. It's a really smart and well-written story, a little hard to follow at first, but full of loads of little clues hinting towards the big twists which make it really rewarding to watch multiple times. Plus, it's got some of the best dialogue in the entire series - there has yet to be another line in this series that goes as hard as "Kittridge, you've never seen me 'very upset'."
Glad to see you enjoyed this Addie, you're in for a treat with the rest of the series too. The next one is definitely a big step down, but it's still quite a lot of fun. And the rest of the series is consistently top-notch action cinema, this truly is one of, if not the best action film series currently running

  • @oxhine
    @oxhine 17 дней назад +7

Hey, Addie! This franchise is based on the 1960s TV SERIES and its 1980s revival both starring Peter Graves.
Both runs of the series were more about long cons by a small team of operatives such as the opening set piece and relied on the gimmick of wearing disguises and utilizing cool spy gadgets. The movies retain those elements but are more about white-knuckle stunts performed by Cruise himself!
The LALO SCHIFRIN score is one of TV's most iconic themes and never fails to set the electrifying pace!
What many people don't realize is that JON VOIGHT is playing JIM PHELPS, the team leader of the TV series played by PETER GRAVES in the '60s original and '80s reboot! That means the hero of the series turns into the villain of the movie! Graves was actually approached for a cameo but he didn't like the twist about his signature character and declined to participate.
Phelps kills his young wife because his ego couldn't tolerate her being attracted to his young protege. He wanted absolute loyalty and commitment from her which she betrayed by coming to Ethan's defense. Having her work in close proximity to a guy like Ethan, Phelps' September-May relationship was doomed from the get-go! Lol. The hot youngsters' mutual attraction was evident in the first scene!
The series is mostly consistently excellent and is one of the best action franchises ever made!
The first three films are products of their directors bearing their undeniable signatures. This was every inch a BRIAN DEPALMA film with POV shots, flashback sequences and low-angle vantage points.
DePalma was most definitely inspired by JULES DASSIN's heist films for the famous Langley caper scene. In both 1955's "RIFIFI" and 1964's "TOPKAPI", the intricate thefts are plotted out for the audience, executed in SCORELESS SILENCE, initiated from a ceiling ingress and nearly foiled with a slip.
The second film is every inch a JOHN WOO movie and the third film is every inch a J.J. ABRAMS movie.

Just to be clear: This is directed by Brian de Palma. That's probably why it sometimes feels more like a Bond movie or a spy thriller from the 1970s. You could think of it as Tim Burton's "Batman" compared to Joel Schumacher's later entries... It's also probably why it feels a little more grounded in reality than the rest of the franchise (the Eurostar tunnel sequence obviously excluded) ... Bonus trivia: The title sequence is literally the entire movie cut down to short 'blink-and-you'll miss-them' fast cuts. Bonus trivia 2: When Max asks Ethan "Who are you, and what are you doing here?" it's a nod to the caterpillar scene in Lewis Carrol's "Alice in Wonderland".

I grew up watching the original TV series, some of it in first run. I even closely followed the late 1980s TV continuation version which had Jim Phelps returning to lead a new team. This movie was almost perfect. It definitely caught the spirit of the TV show, and went high-octane with it. But a lot of us original viewers were upset at making Jim the villain. The TV character was above reproach and should have remained that way. I remember reading that the actor who was the original team gadget guy stormed out of the theater mid-showing when he realized they'd compromised Mr. Phelps. Had they used another name, maybe even Dan Briggs, who was the first season team lead who with less known about him might have been corruptible, this movie would have been perfect. Still, most everyone had a lot of fun, and first night in the theater was a riot of happy viewers.

But the aspect that makes these films so good is not really Tom Cruise, although he is a big factor, it's the writing that's fantastic! When you get time you should check out the TV series that led to the films. The television show began in 1966-1973 and restarted in 1988 for 2 seasons. There are NO bad episodes in either line.
Glad to see you react with great interest.

the later movies are great action movies, but this one really captured the MI vibe from the original show.

Yes, 30 years of these movies. They're all highly enjoyable except the last one.
Actually, nearly 60 years if you include the TV series, starring Peter Graves of "Airplane" fame as Jim Phelps.
Fun fact - The theme song, written by Lalo Schifrin for the 60's series, has an odd 5/4 time signature. The iconic cadence spells out "MI" in Morse code.

1 is a fun, good start
2 is the weakest and is rather over-the-top, but still fun
3 is where it starts to get serious and sees a step up in quality
4 is where they really hit their stride. Several people's favorite.
5 and 6 are generally considered the best. Absolutely terrific
7 is an excellent addition. Not as strong as 5 or 6, but still a wild ride that is thoroughly enjoyable

If you thought this one was cheesy just wait until MI2, it’s borderline ridiculous, but it gets better after that. The best ones start with the fourth installment.

@@MrSiriusAB Excellent villain, maybe too good. It was a drastic change from the almost cartoonish previous movie, maybe too dark for the series but it’s a good movie, I just think that since part 4 they improved everything, the story, the filming style, the casting choices, the mix of comedy-drama-action, etc.

"This seems impossible." Well, it's not mission improbable...it's mission impossible. Love, love, LOVE your reactions. This one was a bit cheesy because it had to bridge the gap between the long running old tv show and present day. As the next movie is not the best one of the entire series, but it does get increasingly better starting with the 3rd one. I'll be waiting anxiously for your reactions!

  • @jkhoover

The 3rd Mission Impossible is my absolute favorite, so I can't say it gets better with every movie. It dies jump to another level after 2 though.

  • @TomTomson81

For all those who knew the series from before, is this movie of course even more shocking. Because you have followed the entire team for years and here everyone dies and the plot twist is that the actual main character of the series is the bad guy.
