  • Hello Everyone,
Welcome back to the The Apollo Mission series. This is the twelfth in a series of episodes that will cover our bike ride across America from Astoria, Oregon to New York City.
In this episode, we leave our awesome campsite at the amazing Douglas Riverside City Park and pedal on more gravel roads eventually finding our way to Lusk, Wyoming where we pitch out tent a BJ's Campground.
We are raising money for The Boise Bicycle Project as part of The Apollo Mission so please consider donating to the Boise Bicycle Project (BBP) at the link below. It's a great organization making a huge difference to the Boise biking and overall community.

    Tubeless is so worth it.

      Hey Wes,
Yes, it's on our list of things to get done and get some experience with before our next big bike adventure. The issue we had in this episode obviously won't have happened if we were tubeless.
Thanks for watching and for the comment.

What a beautiful stretch of gravel

      Hey Kevin,
It was a really nice gravel road and obviously well maintained. And as expected, not much traffic other than folks working for the railroad and ranchers. There were a few people living off the road but mostly at the ends near the paved roads and more populated areas, everything in the middle was cattle grazing and a lot of prong horn deer.
Thanks for watching and for the comment.

The tires on the Apollo are tubeless ready. You guys should go with tubeless.

Interesting the adventures on the road...you never know what is around the next corner or over the next hill.
Waiting for the "Iowa portion" of your trip. Keep the episodes coming.

      Hey William,
You got it...that's part of the fun and excitement of these types of trips, particularly when you decide to take a gravel road that seems to go to the middle of nowhere. It was a fun day.
Every episode we get closer to Iowa so please stay tuned.
      Thanks for watching.

Camp cuisine question. How does the Knorr products compare with freeze dried backpacking foods like Mountain House. I'm assuming that a pack of Knorr flavored rice/pasta and canned chicken is more available on the road than Mountain House, and maybe cheaper. Like some people we know, beans, beans for every meal may get to be too much. LOL

I was at Wal Mart today and answered my own question.

    • @BBB_Adventures
      @BBB_Adventures  Год назад +2

      Hey Craig,
I see you left a follow up comment but wanted to give you my POV anyway. The Knorr rice products were readily available at small town grocery stores or even some more comprehensive gas station convenience stores, as was the canned chicken. The chicken varied a lot more in price then then rice. The availability of freeze dried meals wasn't as good and really wasn't available at all in small towns. I think the overall price of the chicken and rice meal was lower than the Mountain House meals. We also ate canned beans on tortillas like Ryan but we heated ours up and added a small can of diced peppers since we had the stove. The other one pot quick and easy meal we ate was cheap ramen noodles and a can of tuna. Also very good when you're hungry.
Thanks for watching and for the question.
      Enjoy the Ride

So inspiring, love your videos. I upgraded my continuum rear cog and chainring my lowest gear is 0.98, perfect for climbing. Thanks for your video on the rear sprocket

      Hey Chan,
Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment.
It's great to hear you changed the cogs on your Continuum to get lower gearing. The stock bikes are made for the "average" rider and when you have special considerations like lots of hills or want to tour with heavy panniers like we did on The Apollo Mission, it's great the design of the Priority bikes allows gearing modifications. We are super happy with the gearing changes we made and are pleased to hear you are as well.
Thanks for the kind words about our content, it really encourages us. Stay tuned for many more episodes of The Apollo Mission.
      Enjoy the Ride

I cringe every time y'all ride over those cattle crates. I would walk my bike over them. They're nasty and hard on equipment.

      Howdy,
Yeah...I hear ya. Those big cattle grates are aggressive. That's why the food bag fell off Mb's rear rack. However, what was worse were the cracks in the shoulders in Nebraska. Seems like you're getting closer to those episodes.
Thanks for watching and for the comment.

I don't know if anyone has ever suggested this before but if you put a small amount of air into the tube prior to insertion it makes it much easier. You don't blow it all the way up, just enough to give it a little bit of form when pushing it up onto the rim under the tire. I'm currently running Surley Extra Terrestrial tires in a tubeless configuration and I'm really happy with it. I always carry tube backups but tubeless is just so great for all of those thorns and small wires that are prevalent on tours. Cheers and have fun at this year's RAGBRAI.

      Hey Jeff,
Thanks for the comment and recommendations on tubes and tires. I have been putting a small amount of air in the tubes to help prevent pinching of the tube during installation.
I think we'll eventually try tubeless so it's good to hear you've had a good experience so far.
      Thanks for watching.

Another brilliant and informative video wish we had the Sunshine as some parts of Australia have been hit by massive flooding, love the bikes it seems they can handle the gravel roads

      Hey Raymond,
Thanks for watching and for the feedback on the video, we really appreciate it.
The flooding in Australia is terrible, I wish there was a way to ship some sunshine down there to dry things out. Hopefully the conditions are improving. Seems like the extreme weather variations are something we're all going to have to adapt to. Maybe we'll all need floating bicycles.
The Apollo bikes were fantastic on the gravel roads, even loaded down with all our gear. I absolutely love those bikes and am looking forward to more adventures on them.
      Thanks again for watching.
      Enjoy the Ride

Has to be a little disheartening to think that you have the flats issue figured out, and then fffffttt! Another! I know that many say the wide open spaces of Eastern Wyoming are beautiful, but BOY, that's a whole lot of scrub! Ha! Much like where I live! 🤣Except we have huge corporate farms covering the landscape. Another stellar (see how I worked the space theme in there?) episode.

    • @BBB_Adventures
      @BBB_Adventures  Год назад

You are spot on. This was the first flat on the trip that I was really discouraged about. The situation with the goat heads in Shoshoni was upsetting but I could understand what had happened. When the tube failed without a tire puncture after we thought we had that sorted, I was upset. If we were tubeless, this flat wouldn't have happened.
The open spaces and big sky are interesting for sure and if you are a fan of deserts then this part of Wyoming is worth visiting. I grew up in this type of terrain so I do like it up personally prefer other landscapes like the mountains of central Idaho.
We do appreciate the space theme. :)
Thanks for watching and for the comment.

That little Riverside Park was a gem.
Looks like the Priority bikes handled the gravel brilliantly. I like mixing up the terrain.

      Hey Vic,
Yes, that park was really great. We'd definitely recommend it for anyone traveling on highway 20. There is also a really cool railroad museum with a huge steam locomotive out front in Douglas. We didn't have a chance to visit it but would love to go back.
The Apollos did fantastic on the gravel, even loaded down as much as they were. Totally impressed with those bikes.
      Thanks for watching.
