48:29 The beautiful game! It feels like you are watching a soccer match. I can see these passes clear as day but when you are on the field it is such a different vantage point that you miss it all together in the heat of the moment. Sometimes you can see this beautiful background element or key highlight that is coming along nicely but then it just gets painted over because being so close to the canvas it doesn’t register.
I have nothing but respect for Jeffrey Watts. But, Dave, you knocked it out of the ball park. Your's was vibrant and lively, not muddy and gray looking. Your warm and cool colors on Conan's body looked very painterly. I think gouache is definitely a medium that would compliment your style. Freakin' bravo !!! I will definitely be checking out Mr. Watts Atelier.
This stream was and is one of the most inspiring clases ever. Everything he mention or talk about. It’s a treasure for everyone of us. Fantastic. Thanks for this gift of knowledge
This was soooooo good I loved seeing Jeff work on a piece originally done by my all-time favorite comic artist Big John Buscema, this was truly educational and inspiring.
Watts Atelier is an answer to the prayers of countless aspiring artists around the world. Thanks to Jeff Watts, and David Finch for creating such world-class content and making it affordable! Making a career in art is not easy, but what you both have done to help us brings us closer to achieving our dreams.
In the course of my late career as a carny artist, we called this the "50000 screaming Zulu warriors in full battle drag"problem. How do you paint 50k Zulus...?" Answer you don't. You paint 1 Zulu, 2 partial Zulus, a big cloud of dust, various arms, legs and weapons.Presto, as many Zulu warriors as you need. Even silhouettes.
Jeff watts is the man! I rarely say that about an artist but he is one of the few exceptions in my book. I truly believe he is by far one of the best sketch artists in the world as well as a phenomenal painter. The most impressive part is he can teach it. Most people at this level have a hard time teaching the skill set, it usually gets lost in the deliverance of the material. But he pulls it off magnificently. Thanks for this Dave! God bless.
It took me years to figure out the value of those old Paint by Numbers painting sets that I used to get....After attending Art College and Watching Jeffrey Paint I can see echos of what they were teaching.
WOW, Eric and Jeff get runners up to Dave tonight! It probably doesn’t help Jeff that I have been staring at his piece for two hours and only got glimpses of Dave’s but really beautiful work Mister Finch!
Lo vi completo, y lo guarde para futuras consultas. Increíble proceso, muy práctico y ordenado. Retome el dibujo hace 3 años gracias a tus videos y fuiste una gran ayuda. Espero ver más videos tuyos, saludos!
Two kings coming together and just bein bad-asses, what a cool experience, the next step is both being in person and live drawing at comic con san diego.
On the note of learning through others, I pretty much taught myself how to do digital color off of your's (Mr. Finch) and people like Jim Lee's Inkings, and looking at all of my favorite covers and panels entirely too close and trying to figure out how they did what they did to get the render to the level they did XD. Honestly between that and some color theory and line theory from other comic artists from every facet of the industry (Illustrators, Colorists, etc.) Ive grown faster than I ever did in a classroom.... Edit for context: Taught myself digital art, because I came from practical art, and honestly thought digital was so much harder than I thought It would be going into it. standing on the shoulders of giants like you and others showed me things from a perspective I doubt I would have found on my own.
I'm a traditional artist who has gone like 80% digital nowadays. It's mostly because of the ease of making adjustments on the fly to meet deadlines (or flipping out and starting over without losing much time). Someday I'll be brave enough to go back to all traditional all the time!
I am there with you, I let myself be more digital but have transferred to be 95% traditional. I have had it with the program not working when I need it, the tablet malfunctioning and the laptop not telling when it has low battery and shutting down. Digital is cool, but a real painting has impact and there are people who pay big money because there will never be another one. Yes there can be a replica, but whoever has the original has history, like having a Da Vinci.
Hello my teacher! What happened to you? It's gone, I'm worried, because we don't have news from you... You are special to all of us, you have inspired us and taught us wonderful techniques... The community of designers, art lovers care about you ok! Come back soon! I don't know what's going on with you, but I say that God is taking care of you and your family! God blesses! Thank you so much for everything!
For a beginner, and I understand that these streams might not be for us in that sense, it wouls be awesome to see the artists setup. What I mean is the basic technical stuff, like paper choice, what brand colours are used etc. Maybe a short intro before the magic happena :) That said, I've thoroughly enjoyed the couple of your streams I've gone through recently. Proper gold mines of inspiration and learning! 👌🏼
It’s funny I was introduced to that Mail Correspondence course that Rockwell was a part of by a friend who still has both of her books that she purchased & began her art career with back in 1962. Those books are fascinating & worthy of review & studying from though the critiques by those artists are long past gone. But still, it’s interesting seeing what she had to do & invest in to learn art skills in comparison with what’s available today.
I was exactly one of those kids who were one hand complimented for pursuing art but later made fun of and discouraged for following it as an adult I grew up completely without help or guidance with my art
Harry Anderson painted a lot with casein, it looks like it to me, there's no way you could paint a light color with gouache over a dark color and get max brightness, the paints will bleed and blend with the layers underneath, nice to see Jeff Watts is a fan of Anderson, I'm sure his father his a major fan of his works too, specially since he did many car illustrations.
Going down an art Rabbit Hole on youtube brought me from a JAZZA video. This video made me realize although everyone can draw yet they completely underestimate how good some people are. Does he have this image in his head that he's trying to replicate or is this a journey of going with the flow?
People sometimes criticise the use of layer options in photoshop as cheating or not giving a natural affect. But if you used them properly they work like washes etc… they can be used to achieve results similar to this video (if you know what you are doing of course).
I'm an acrylic painter, not an artist, a painter with paint brush, paint, and canvas. Sometimes I repaint real houses too. Photoshop won't do this. It's just my thing, to paint using paint and brush.
Comics in the states have always be more factory like (a product to sale) than in Europe. In Super Heroes, the best of the best were Spiderman and Conan the barbarian. We, French Cansdians, would indulge in collecting the americans comics, but we knew that the real stuff was made in Europe - especially in France and Belgium. Now, in the States, with two distributors controling 80% of the market, the message that being a strong and heterosexual white male is wrong is clear. Artists eho don't agree can leave. Oh my God, only in America!
But badly needing money, I'm gonna take my chance with the "Adventures of Louise", a transgender living in a very difficult workd. My drawing has still many flaws, but, I dunno, I had the feeling that it might eork...
Me, I'm French Canadian, so my roots in comics come mostly from Europe. Fortunately I'd say, because I don't know much about minorities and diversity, trans and LGBT stuff. The comics industry in Europe icones from too many sources, they haven't been able so far to impose their political agenda.
But they gave the Angoulême price to a woman who, in my opinion, anyway, didn't deserve it at all. The prestigious price had to be given to a woman who is talking constantly about her... Have to be careful here.... about her plotte. Well, they killed the comics industry in the States, they are working very hard to do the same thing in Europe. One of those situations where you have no choice but fight back.
The GOAT! Never levelled up faster than taking the Watts Atelier classes.
Did you do your classes in person, or online? I’m curious if there is value in training online with Mr. Watts?

That was great bring him back asap please!
Man, i love Jeff, he is like an enencyclopedia, a master of teaching art
I've watched this twice now while trying to paint in Gouache. Absolutely fantastic and inspiring, thank you all!
Dave, I think this is one of my favorite pieces you have done. I think yours is right up there with Jeff’s
Thank you for saying what I have been thinking for years!

Maybe the pencil he painted over was mixing in with the paint, which can make the first few layers look grayish

Jeff Watts and his Father Robert are my damn heroes. Two genius !!

What a treat! Epic.

Conan my favorite hero of all time.
I made the suggestion to invite Jeff on ages (years?) ago, great it actually happened. I knew it would be a perfect fit.
I appreciate this so much.

This is beyond effen COOL!
Hermosa pintura
Goauche works lovely on light warm gray toned linen texture card stock, the linen helps blending, and has a grea tooth for prismacolors.
I love Jeff’s work. His online program has really improved my drawing skills!
Gracias, gracias mil gracias por compartir el contenido su generosidad llega a muchos artistas soñadores como yo mil gracias saludos desde Colombia
Oh man. Would love to hear you chat Bridgman with Jeffrey Watts. Get it on the calendar!
Thank you . 🙏
Amazing tour GDL!!

Thank you! I have learned much from this.
This was such a great live, I'm a huge Watt's fanboy. Love your channel Dave.

This was fun, I wanna continue watching it later (@ 1:41:04). Sorry, I timestamped it for me to remember.
Man, i miss monday night drawing sessions.
David, if you recorded yourself painting Conan, could you upload it to your channel so we can see it?
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Nice one
What do you think the future is for artists other than as a hobby with the advent of Midjourney bot?
Bruh that midjourney shit not replacing real artists

Daaaaave, I missed you so much, where were you 😭😭
@2:37:18 Life lessons with Jeffrey Watts.
Youse guys do know that Frazetta used hella cobalt drier in his oils, the underpainting would set up overnight.
my father wants me to become a truck driver, and I'm literally in an existential crisis
Do one with Esad Ribic

Please make painting tutorials that really helpful
