    I recently found your channel and am trying to eat it all up! You are a transmission genius! Thanks so much for your knowledge! I recently rebuilt a 98 4L60E and could not get the servo out. I gave the transmission the rest of a TransGo shift kit but not any servo upgrades. The truck will not shift less than 6000 rpm’s now. Could this servo be lazy compared to the rest of the upgrades?

    • @PullStartStables

      Update, we got the servo apart and made the changes accordingly. No difference. It doesn’t matter how we drive it, it revs up to the moon (6,000 rpms) before shifting. Any thoughts or ideas? Maybe I missed a check ball?

    I've got a 95 G20, and going to rebuild mine. Going with heavy duty clutches and it was recommended to use a Corvette servo? Also upgrading the sun gear to the stronger one other than stock? Anything else I should do to make this trans last longer?

    I bought an 03 4wd Silverado recently. Near as I can tell it has a healthy 4L60E. I estimate it was rebuilt about 40k miles ago based on average miles of truck and a date code on the torque converter. I checked to see if it had a Corvette servo. It did not. I assume it is OE speck rebuild. I would like to maximize it's remaining lifespan. I plan on adding an auxiliary cooler. Do you have any "in the car" valve body improvement recommendations to maximize 4l60e longevity?

    Thanks for the great series on the 4L60E. I'm starting my second pass on all the videos.
    Have you considered a diagnostic series for this xmission? It would really help those of us who are starting from scratch, especially if it tied the theory to the symptoms to the diagnosis.
    Speaking of diagnosis, I had to change the radiator in my 1996 GMC c1500 4.3. Everything was great for the first 400 miles. Then, in a matter of 3 or 4 miles, the transmission started slipping and then no motive power though the engine was running fine. Popped the hood and everything was drenched in transmission fluid. Needed to get it home where I could fix the line connection so I had fluid brought to me; added 2.5 quarts and made it another 4 miles. No power again. Added another 2-1/2 quarts and made it the last mile home. Went out the next morning, started the engine, warmed it up and checked fluid level and added 1/2 quart to bring it to full. Hopped in, put it into gear and ...Nothing! No gear, forward or reverse.
    Thoughts??

    • @SouthpawAutoworks
      @SouthpawAutoworks 2 года назад +2

      Thank you for the positive feedback on the 4L60E video series.
      Yes, I do plan on diving deeper into the diagnostics. The "Basic Operation" videos are laying the ground work for future diagnostics videos. We first gotta understand how a healthy system works, before we can recognize problem areas, and before we can understand (and hopefully appreciate) solutions that people/companies have developed.
      I'm sorry to hear that...
      Are your cooler lines held in place (at the radiator) with wire clips?
      Those retaining clips can wear out, and break.
      Note: If the cooler lines are able to bounce around, during driving, it accelerates the wear of those clips.
      Every time those clips are removed, they really should be replaced with brand news ones.
      When a cooler lines pop off, the trans will lose a lot of fluid, in short order. This kind of event almost always results in smoked clutches.

    Can I use a steel wire brush it won't damage the bore will it? I love in Michigan my snap ring is rusted out it won't budge I need some advice this thing looks like it's gonna be a nightmare any help would be appreciated thank you.

    • @SouthpawAutoworks
      @SouthpawAutoworks 2 года назад +2

      Yes, you can use a wire brush to knock debris away from the servo cover and snap-ring. However, do not use the wire brush inside of the servo bore (underneath the servo cover). Scotch-Brite works good for the section of the bore that lives below (or inside of) the servo cover.

It looks like it has become one with the cover so disappointing, living in Michigan is bad for rust I had to super heat my old O2 sensor with a map gas torch and spray it down for a week straight to get that out. I did not realize that the trans was still in the vehicle. Might be hard to get a video of the servo, as it can be tight quarters.
      Missed one of your questions earlier:
      "The cover should not depress at all with the snap ring on should it?"
      Answer: It's normal to be able to push the servo cover inwards with the snap-ring still in place.
      01 Silverado:
      It's normal to not have a lot of room when pulling/installing a servo with the trans still installed in the vehicle.
      IDK if you've already watched this video or not:

    • @SouthpawAutoworks

      I like your idea (lowering the trans).
      I imagine that you'll gain some more room to work by lowering the trans, a little bit. If you decide to go that route, you gotta keep on eye on some stuff while lowering the trans. If the engine has a distributor on it, it'll come into contact with the firewall. Don't want to stress any electrical wires, cooler lines, etc.
      I'm about to watch your video.

    Hey bro! Please respond man I cant get a straight up answer from no where. Im really pretty familiar with these transmissions and a DIYer and ive installed many corvette servos and other things. If im getting a lazy 3-4 shift, does flipping the 4th gear servo piston help tighten the band??? I can add shift pressure through a tune but I will only do so if you say its safe.

    • @SouthpawAutoworks
      @SouthpawAutoworks Год назад +2

      I personally don’t have any experience flipping any components, within the 2-4 servo stack-up, for the sake of tightening up the band.
      The aftermarket offers different length servo pins, as well as shims. Some builders will make the servo pins longer, where need be, by adding more material, with a welder.

    I had my servo cover blow off after 60ths that I have put on the vehicle. I was able to have all the parts saved by the heat shield. I reassembled it and while at it changed the filter and topped off fluid. It worked fine for about 2,000 miles and again blew off. I ensured the snap ring was in place. And for an extra put a collar that I had laying around between the center of the cover and the heat shield thinking that it would keep it from happening again. What would cause so much pressure on the servo to blow the cover. Transmission shifts fine. No slip. Any help would be awesome.

    • @SouthpawAutoworks
      @SouthpawAutoworks 11 месяцев назад +2

      I'm a little confused by your first sentence...
      But, this has me thinking servo cover snap ring.
      If the snap ring isn't engaged all the way, the servo will pop out of the trans case.
      The snap ring groove (inside the trans case) must be cleaned out really good. Leftover debris, in the groove, will make it hard (or impossible) to fully seat the snap ring into the groove.
      Working on these things with the trans in the vehicle is a challenge. It's hard to see. Lack of lighting, bad angle, etc.
      When time permits, I'd like to make a video on this.
      Wishing you the best on your 4L60E.
      Note:
      I've seen a 4L60E transmission case get destroyed, by the 2-4 Servo snap ring not being seated all the way. Without going into anymore detail, I will say it's super important to make sure the snap ring gets installed all the way (seated).

      Is it slipping for a second, then up-shifts into 3rd gear?
      Does it slip when the engine/trans are cold?
      Does it slip when the engine/trans are up to operating temp?
      Or does it slip regardless of engine/trans temp?
      Why was the trans rebuilt?
      Failed 3-4 Clutch?

      I wouldn't think so...
      The 2-4 Band and 2-4 Servo are partially responsible for creating 2nd gear and 4th gear.
      If you're missing both 3rd and 4th, it's likely due to a failed 3-4 Clutch. Super common on the 4L60E.
