  • Was curious to try a new pickup in my precision bass so I thought I'd make a comparison video.
    My original pickup was a Fender Pure Vintage '63. New pickup (cream covers) is the Lindy Fralin stock wind. Strings are broken-in D'Addario Chromes 45-100. Bass is a lightweight swamp ash body, neck is rosewood board on maple.
    Fender pickups measured at 11.63k, Fralin at 11.24k
    Bass is recorded direct through the UA Apollo into Logic, with no EQ or compression.

    Wow the clarity of the Fralin is so much better. It sounds like it's a little more scooped/extended in the lows and highs which is probably a big part of it. Good comparison.

      Much bigger range of frequencies, the lows are deep and full but the highs are crisper as well.

    FedEx just dropped off my PV 63, dropping it in my Squier CV 60's. Bill Lawrence in it now, fantastic but not terribly 60s... Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats, nearly as bright as worn in roundwounds. Thanks for this, I would have only bought a Fralin to find out it was the wrong thing to do. You can roll off highs but it's not easy to roll off nasal tones. The 63 has just the right amount of wool

    I assembled a P bass from Roger Waters body and Steve Harris neck and put stock wind Fralins in and it's the best sounding P bass I've ever played. I string it with Ernie Ball Slinky Flats 45-105. So many people compliment the tone.

    This is a very interesting demo. I was totally set on the Fralins because of their clarity, but now I'm not so sure. I feel like the Fenders had more depth in the midrange. It made the Fralins sound like you had a PJ and were switching to the bridge pickup! Almost nasally. I do like treble and clarity, but I like depth equally. So perplexed now.

      Haha totally. Worth keeping in mind this isn’t “battlefield conditions.” Fralin at 100% sounds a little raunchy here, but I was very happy to have the extra top end at a gig running through the club’s fender rumble.

      @@classicbasslines I appreciate your input. I crank the treble up to 10 on every amp I use. This is because I dont play tradition style bass. I play it more like it was a classical guitar, so I need lots of high end. But I love the depth of the classic fender P and J basses. Needless to say I haven't found the perfect setup yet, but I have a bass fit for the job, just need the right pickups.

      Fralin has something about double bass tone (that upper mids/highs). I like that, for flats, motown, jazz etc. For rock, blues I think I prefer Fender with rounds. That's why it's good to have 2 Precisions :D

    Fenders lose their punch when you roll the tone off, Fralin’s maintain the punch/ attack that keeps things articulate but allows you to make the notes “rounder/warmer”. I think I’m going with the Fralins.

    Wow...I bought the 40th Anniversary Squier P-Bass (I even have broken-in Chromes on it as well) and was thinking of dropping in the PV '63 in it as I was hoping for a little more midrange punch...after playing along with your video, to my surprise my bass with the stock pickups actually sounds damn close if not near identical to your PV '63 clips! So I'm thinking I'll go with the Fralins as they have definitely more mids on tap, plus they get more range out of the Tone knob.
    Definitely need to change the knobs and cap on mine though; the volume knob acts weird and the tone knob doesn't cut as much as it should...other than that these new Squiers are amazing.

    I've not heard a better P bass bedroom tone than the PV63. The one I got was a little microphonic (finger taps on the pickup cover would come through the amp) and could benefit from pole piece grounding, but the tone is incredible.

    Those Fralins sound awesome! Pretty much how I think a vintage P-bass should sound. I just ordered one for mine. I wonder how they'll compare to EMG GZR that I've used for 7 years. GZR is awesome, but I wanted to try a slightly sweeter vintage flavor, and GZR's tone pot at zero always has a mid bump and doesn't get quite as creamy. You still happy with your Lindy Fralins?

    To me the choice is easy. The Fralin remings me of the SPB3: too boomy and too much signal. I prefer the purity of the Fender.

    • @classicbasslines

      It's interesting. The Fralin has a lot more clarity. Wide-open I think it requires a cleaner technique. With the tone at 50% it sounds more like the Fender wide-open. I had switched to Chromes because I felt this bass was too dark for Labellas. I will likely switch back to them now and hopefully it'll be perfect. 🤷‍♂ But I'd rather roll the tone off a bit than not have the brightness when I need it. I think

    Universal Rule #37;
    All the time that we have gullible bass players, companies will earn a fortune selling aftermarket pick-ups.
    Guys/girls, walk over to your amp, turn a knob 10%...that's it, you got it. There you go, saved you $100. As I've saved you money...and we know you are gullible, could you send me $50 now? I think that's reasonable 🤔

    Do you think the 11.63k reading for the '63 Fender pickup is normal, regarding the fact that Fender says 12k on the box? Just got mine and I read 11.33k with my multimeter... A bit disappointed!

    • @classicbasslines
      @classicbasslines  Год назад

      I'm afraid I don't know enough about pickups to know how much tolerance to expect. The Fralin website says 11k and mine read 11.24, so at least some margin of error is certainly to be expected with something like this.
