Assembling a Harbor Freight towable backhoe trencher

- Purchased the Harbor Freight towable backhoe trencher for odd jobs around our 20 acre property. So far we've used it to dig out and replace a septic line (shown at the end of the video), relocate small trees, tear out invasive vines and roots, and move medium size field stones. Since purchasing, modifications include: adding a thumb, replacing all the pin grease fittings with zerk fittings, and fabricating a set of removable front wheels so you can tow without having to swap the outriggers with the back wheels.

You 2 lovers did a very nice job on your video. Keep up the good work!🙂
My harbor freight backhoe arrives tomorrow. Your setup-and-use video is awesome. Thanks for posting it!
Great job and I used your video to help with the assembly of mine. The best part is I had my daughter helping me and it was fantastic to show her that women can do these things and be GREAT at it, plus demonstrate it for others. Keep making these because you help to empower women and most importantly help DADS empower and inspire daughters to do things. Not have to depend on a big strong man to help assemble something. Thanks again.
Thanks so much for the comment - your daughters are lucky to have such an encouraging parent. : )
Thanks! This was a good video to demonstrate that this machine does well. :) I just bought one, excited to try it out.
Thanks, @Gpassantino! This was my first Super Thanks so I really appreciate the support and encouragement.
ours arrived today.. Seeing you move yours by installing the axles and a wagon under the tongue was awesome
I built one of these myself and recommend them to everyone.
It's a ton of fun and can take out stumps to.
👍👍👍👍👍👍 Good detailed video. Thank You.
Great job ladies. Teamwork, works, you gals did an awesome job.
My backhoe is to be delivered today! Thank you for the videos - especially the unboxing and assembly. I'm going to need all the help I can get!
Well you girls did a fine job there in all 👍
I really enjoyed the video. I'm also glad that you recorded the unboxing of the machine. I've been looking at one of these on harbor freight's website, but I've been rather worried about the delivery.
I live upon a hill and the only place that a delivery truck can pull off of the road and unload the trencher is in a wide spot beside of the main highway by my house.
Now that I know how it is packaged, I'm relieved to know that I can bolt the wheels into the machine and pull it to my house with an atv and then haul the rest of the parts home and assemble it there.
I just ordered one myself. Was there communication with the driver to meet. I have a long narrow driveway off the hwy. Little worried.
@@movaughn20 I was lucky enough to find a slightly used one that wasnt far from home. I bought it last year. It's hands down a great machine. It took a bit of getting use to but after that, it's been great.
Wow, thanks so much. Was really informative and useful, as I'm thinking of buying one.
Glad it was helpful!
Looking forward to the wheels video. 😁
That looks like it’s a real nice little unit there I wouldn’t mind getting one of them for my little B6000 Kubota tractor👍
It is self powered. It doesn't attach to a tractor except to tow across the field.
@@fhuber7507 Ah yes but I have a Kubota B 6000 four-wheel-drive little diesel tractor that would look very cool with this attached to it we must consider the coolness factor
Great machines, I love mine.
Im not pleased. Ive been asked to work on a few HF trenchers. I can say this: sure beats a shovel.
B E W A R E - must see vid if youre interested in a HF trencher. The New HF Trencher backhoe has some serious manufacture defects. I hope this helps. 4 minutes into this vid and you'll see.

It just depends on the mission,
Nice, thanks for the video.
Thanks for the Harbor Freight videos! I am about to purchase one of their trenchers, BUT, I need to know the approximate assembled size of the trencher so I can purchase a shed to cover it! I can't find these dimensions anywhere! Would the assembled trencher fit inside a 10 x 10 storage shed? Thanks again for your help!
Pretty cool 😎👍
Congrats ! Now it’s a challenge to put my backhoe together ! Lol

So pretty much like most harbor freight things, it’s bones are good but crappy fittings and switches and with a little tweaking a perfect item for a hole owner but nothing professional grade
@@jonathanwilliams1053 Pretty much. : )
Good job putting it together. Do you have any videos or pictures of the thumb and front wheel setup? I just got mine a few days ago and I'm looking for ideas. Thanks!
badass, i want one!
Thanks for the great video. I would love to learn more about your mods. The thumb, wheels etc seem like sensible things to do. Will you be posting videos about them?
Thanks again
Hope to put together a video this Spring.
Great video! Where did you find the angled front wheel assemblies?
Made them: ruclips.net/video/VZcpg9SjTl8/видео.html
nice work. can you explain how you fabricated the wheels for the front. did you use harbor freight wheeels? tks
Just posted a video on the wheels:
ruclips.net/video/VZcpg9SjTl8/видео.html
can it lift a side walk slab?
Can you tell us how you added the wheels? Really like the idea since i don't have an ATV to pull it around the property. Thank you...
This is a 2 year follow-up but I finally put together a video on the wheels: htttps://ruclips.net/video/VZcpg9SjTl8/видео.html
Just ordered one, but worried about delivery. I have a 500ft driveway off a busy hwy. Does the driver communicate for delivery instructions? Meet to slide onto a trailer, etc? Any details are appreciated.
Great video I am really thinking of buying one of these as rental of a small machine will be around 2700 USD so this would pay for itself fast Thanks for the modification suggestions...can you tell me where you bought the thumb? and any pics with thumb
Did you in up buying one?
How wide was the shipping crate?
I have a 5x8 trailer but I’m just worried if the crate is too wide as I will have to pick up from a distributor.
4 foot by 8 foot. Height is 3 feet. I know this is probably too late, but I measured today and it would be good for anyone else asking the same question.
Forget the backhoe what's the song during the demonstration? I'm jammin out!
what is the cost & from where will get to purchase?
Awesome video! Nicely done . Thanks for sharing. Did you just get your backhoe? I’ve waiting for one , it been on back order for months?
We got it this past spring. Fortunately it wasn't on backorder then. Thanks for watching!
This maybe an ignorant question, but does anyone know, is there a particular type of hydraulic fluid I'm supposed to use in this thing?
I used Traveller ISO 46 hydraulic oil, purchased from Tractor Supply Store
@@stickwallfarm Thank you Sir!
Great video I am looking to buy the backhoe, do you have a video on the front wheels? Thanks again!
Plan to make a video about that this Spring. 👍
Wheels video is finally here! ruclips.net/video/VZcpg9SjTl8/видео.html
Nice video work. Just watched the one on upgrading the hydraulic pump. I've had mine for about two years now. I'm working on transferring a bunch of wood chips into my John Deere lawn tractor trailer to move to the back yard. I had seen another video on upgrading, but ran across yours, while looking for it. Thanks for the clean video and part numbers.
I noticed you had at least one extra tire mounted on it. Is that a spare or did you rig up tires to put down when the legs came up and make it simpler to move it?
I just put the bucket into the bed of my lawn tractor trailer and lifted the legs up enough to pull it around the yard using the lawn tractor. Worked out as a quick and easy way to move it with the property.
hello , did you guys get a bag of plastic washer-like n some rubber o-rings etc......but dont show where they go..ANYBODY ELSE ..USE IT ?
Yeah, we did. I assumed the o-rings were spares. Don’t remember the plastic washers.
wonder how hard it would be to convert one of these to electric...
Huh, that would be interesting.
I’m wondering if you wouldn’t of been better off to hook a chain or a tow strap to the entire wooden crate and just drag it over to the property real slow with truck
That is what I was thinking too.
Ideally, yup. Had just purchased this property, though, and it didn't have good drive-in access yet.
@@stickwallfarm we’ll hey that’s ok,,,any port in a storm ⛈👍

Lol. Your video is excellent , but that trencher moves exactly like a quadriplegic giraffe. It's extremely comical.
Agreed. Ended up installing a bigger pump to make it go faster (ruclips.net/video/VIQbUcIsBvg/видео.html). Will never be as fluid as a real backhoe, but for homeowner projects at just over 3k we've found it extremely useful. We've dug trenches, replaced sewer lines, pulled out invasive bushes, lifted logs for milling, dug holes for planting trees, etc.
are they made in China?
from what I've seen on internet
seam to do good work but lots
people make changes to them
YES its made in China. Frames and motors are almost always a solid build. Hydraulics can have serious manufacture defects, watch my HF vids.
"CHANGES" as you'd say. Why does a new machine need changes + add extra cost. In my HF vids note the 1952 Massey Freguson HAS NEVER BEEN WORKED ON except tires and has always started and has a cleanable fuel bowl and washable oil and air filter. Tractors run $2000 - $5000

It just depends on the mission, for my reason this machine in a POS- but must watch info to help you decide, just ask, tractor guy here. Full video series on the Harbor Freight Trencher
This one was assembled in the USA with global materials lol
Mine may use parts from China, but I saw central machinery located in the USA. Mine was slowed down from the pandemic and I was worried it would come. So happy it did. I've done everything as a one man band from build to operate.
this is the coolest video ..two womens buy n put it together mini excavator and operate it ...WELL DONE GIRLS ..now start videoin your project with your toy..excavator
