I can't believe Anthony would say such mean things about one of my favorite movies ever. Harry Dean Stanton and Nastassja Kinski were heartbreaking in that film.
This album has the energy personality and production surging through it enough to make it a 7/10 for me, I’m also shocked that a light 3 is the result here lol
All music is “derivative” of other music in one way or another, but that doesn’t mean it’s unoriginal, especially when you choose to examine the composition of different musical elements and styles. I’m actually shocked by this take. Seems like it’d be something that would be right in your wheelhouse. I guess we’ll have to wait and see how your opinion of the duo changes over time.
I think it's good to appreciate what this album is for Paris Texas. The lo-fi grit and loose instrumentation play on the way their songwriting and vocals tear apart the songs; I think they really wanted to have thrashier and dirtier tracks than Boy Anonymous, which feels so much smaller in scope and execution now that they put out Mid Air. I can hear the potential in it, and some spots really shine. Lift-Off got a low-key old school feel to the storytelling, and some of the best practices in their synth influences and mixing coming out. I like a lot of the crunching from the intro on in tenTHIRTYseven; wish it had actually pushed that a little further, but it's still got appeal and the track has the energy of an opener. Closed Caption is pretty tame tbh, but it's interesting and captures a lot of the same characteristics seen on Boy Anonymous-- by the end, it ramps up the texture and really brings some punchy distinction between the empty space in the guitars, the building horns section, and the vocals. The vibe of each song on Mid Air comes through more naturally on this album than their earlier stuff. Feels less like each track is a single gimmick, and actually has at least one thought put into its thematic devices. It kinda hits wide, but doesn't go really deep in defining or bringing out Paris Texas, which is probably why it falls a little for some. The songwriting can be increasingly irreverent when it needs to be, which is actually the appeal for me. Noxious and rough, but stupid and light. Sean-Jared is one of the roughest songs on it in my opinion (like what is this thing that starts happening at 1:15), but the rapping ain't bad at least.
