I remember as recently as the 1980s shopping at makeup counters in department stores was still a luxury experience. For my mother and I it was one of our favourite weekend activities.
@@heatherpoulson5407 We all did it. And a frugal shopping tip even nowadays is to buy makeup brushes at art craft stores instead of department store makeup counters.
In 1975, my Mom gave me her empty bottle of Chanel 5 to put in my purse. I was 9 and a Diva. My teacher called my Mom and asked how a little girl had this in her little purse. She thought I had stolen it from home. My Mom said, "Yes, that's hers.
I loved when my grandmother took me to Macy’s to buy silk stockings. She used Breck shampoo & Ponds cream. Arpege was her scent.I was born and grew up in NYC. Opening the door to Bloomingdale’s and seeing the huge beauty department and the scents of perfume everywhere.
Used to be a HUGE deal when the AVON lady came for your appointment ! My mom would get coffee ready, cookies or the " little sandwiches" the samples,! The perfume samples had , back then , enough for a weeks wear !
Joy perfume was Mae West's favorite and Joy was also the most expensive perfume in the world at one time. I have real samples of it and a replica that I wear alot. i also wear Shalimar because it was my mother's favorite and she was one of the most beautiful brunettes I've ever seen. Rest in heaven mom❤❤❤
I worked for Estee Lauder years ago. Oftentimes, you could smell the Youth Dew before you could see the customer. It IS very strong, therefore only the tiniest amount is needed for all day fragrance. It's best to spritz it into the air and walk through the mist. Otherwise, you'll overpower everyone in the room. Most of Lauder's fragrances were heavily scented but, used properly, a bottle could last for years. I have loved White Linen since its introduction in the late 70s. It's always been my signature scent.
Oh my gosh. I really enjoyed this video. I wish I could go back in time just for a few days to be part of that beauty and shopping 🛍️ experience in the 50’s. I worked at Macy’s for five years managing the Clinique counter . Thanks Laura ❤
I really enjoyed this video! Such a simpler time back then. Folks had manners and respect for each other. I’m a 70’s baby, would love to see a video from then!! ❤
I had purchased a bottle of Joy and it reminded me of potpourri. I ended up giving it to my mom. I also think customer service was probably top notch in those days.
It was so exciting to go shopping. I was poor snd loved going to Walgreens and seeing all the make up. I remember being so excited to have been given a coral lipstick sample at a better store. I still love coral color lipstick. I never had any money, but i enjoyed looking at the designer clothing at the department stores. Siren is my favorite revlon shade. I was delighted to see Marilyn wore it.
I was born in 64, our Avon lady would give me sacks full of samples whenever she came over to see Momma. My favorites were the tiny lipsticks! I might have been 4 when it started, so I never had kiddy play makeup, mine was Avon.
❤ Laura I remember seeing you years ago and loving your unique self and I love hearing your voice again after all these years..I liked watching you dress up in your "finds" and walking in the gardens. Peace love Australia. Ps I had a great Apricot oil moisturizer I think by Montage Jennuse or something it had a cork lid and I was trying to find it but no luck. It was a great body moisturizer. If you have heard of it , the brand maybe wrong 😊 I sold for Avon during University days as well as the Body Shop catalogue from home.
I live in Ontario and they are in the process of tearing down Sears at our mall. 😢 They still have The Bay, but there is hardly anyone shopping there when I go. They have a nice perfume counter and sell Shisedo, Clinique, and Estee Lauder cosmetics.
Great video Laura! I really like Estee Lauder "Youth Dew"! It makes me feel very bold and confident! I have been enjoying trying some of these classic and timeless cosmetic brands! Did Helena Rubenstein completely discontinue, or is it under a different name brand now? Also, might be fun to do beauty videos on Sandra Dee and Annette Funicello 😊
Laura I hope you make a video on what if Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly had lived and they hadn’t died in a tragic way how would there lives had been like as the years progressed. How would there lives have been like if Marilyn Monroe didn’t take to many pills that day and Grace Kelly wasn’t driving instead it was her daughter how would there lives have been like as the years progressed? Hope you make a video on this topic.
Now it’s so sad that most stores are uninviting and a lot of products are behind locked pelxi glass for fear of being stolen. Respect and manners are from a bygone era. 😢
New video live on Dahlias in the Attic:

I wish I could go back to this time period and see these stores.

My mother had a difficult time finding good makeup brushes in the ‘50s. She solved the problem by going to Chinatown and buying calligraphy brushes.
That was a very clever idea! ❤️

Wow must have been neat living in nyc back then
I like Arpege! Found a small bottle of it at a peddler mall one time. I regularly see it sold through The Vermont Country Store
Lol one time my grandma took me and my sis to the Macy’s day parade in the 90s and we got lost. I remember her crying
My grandma swore by Breck , Ponds or Noxema ! Her perfume was Midnight in Paris !
Used to be a HUGE deal when the AVON lady came for your appointment ! My mom would get coffee ready, cookies or the " little sandwiches" the samples,! The perfume samples had , back then , enough for a weeks wear !
Born in 62 but love everything 50s
Youth dew was mommy signature scent! I really do miss her in all her glory! 🙏🏻♥️🌹
Loved the style back then, my mom worked at Jc penny a salesperson and model some of the clothes in the 1960s

Joy was always on my moms dresser and then I used it

I agree Youth Dew is very strong. Ma Griffe was gifted to me as a young girl. I remember Tangee lipstick, peachy, not for me.
I had purchased a bottle of Joy and it reminded me of potpourri. I ended up giving it to my mom. I also think customer service was probably top notch in those days.
My aunt worked for Helena Rubinstein.
Oh neat!
Is Helena Rubenstein still around? My beautiful grandmother used her makeup.
Loved this! I still shop at Macy’s for beauty essentials.
My Aunt use to shop at Bloomingdales for all her makeup
Thank you for this inspirational video. It makes me want to try harder to look my best.
So happy you enjoyed this
I 💯 agree! Laura's videos have inspired me to do the same!
My mom was a young adult at this time. And she said beauty was AMAZING
You have the best channel! 😊
Favorite decades? 40's and 50's
I love your whole channel. I’m binge watching right now haha. Awesome!!!
Literally my dream would be to walk into a 1940s or 1950s dept or drugstore and shop all things beauty
I enjoy the old fashion pictures of stores

Love it
I'm slightly sad that department stores are nearly non existent in Canada now - or at least where I am in Winnipeg.
I know it’s sad!

Charles of the Ritz. L'Air du Temps. Miss Dior. Fleurs de Rocaille. Madame Rochas.
