I have an HD-28 (with the herringbone binding) that I bought after becoming a fan of your channel (but for other reasons, lol, not because of being a Dave fan, though I was and remain!) And I bought the ridiculously expensive Allen wrench from Martin so that I can adjust my truss rod. You've taught me and many others the basics like that, and I thank you for it! Thumbs up! On the eye issues, good luck man. I've had eyes that generally got worse and worse over time, but some time post-56, my prescriptions started getting fewer diopters, which the ophthalmologist said is not uncommon. But of course, the astigmatism and presbyopia that comes to those of us of a certain age continue apace.
Pssst. Hey Dave. Something I learned working in a power plant. That isn't steam that you see. Steam is invisible. What everyone calls steam is the condensate that appears when the steam drops in temperature and is no longer steam. :)
Dave, my Wife has Glaucoma in both eyes and has had some laser surgery done. It is checked six-monthly and she has eye drops. For about 5 years now, it hasn't got any worse, so if you get this done, you should benefit from it. I have just had Cataracts removed and have reasonably good distance vision now, but need reading glasses for up close. Best of luck with your eyes.
My Martin was in for a neck reset after only 5 years. I will say Martin stepped up and did it on their dime. It had a very high action when I bought it new and had to cut the saddle down a lot. After five years it got down to where I had no break over angle on the strings.
Glaucoma is not a joke. You can lose your vision completely. You have to see a glaucoma specialist, not a regular eye doctor from now on. Unfortunately there's really no symptoms other than If your vision looks like you see rainbows that means your eye pressure is high. Be faithful with the eye drops. BTW glaucoma is hereditary so have your kids checked as well from now on.
Please make it a good one I have one of these it needs a bit of help it just turned 51 years old. It has only a bit of belly that seems I'll never get out without a new bridge.
T J Thompson bellies reducer or remove both bridge and bridge plate on the.I used the reducer and then installed the bridge doctor on an old Takamine 12 string it was super bellied worked well , "but" it wasn't a 51 year old Martin and I'm no Dave. However it was a world of fun stuff for a minute.
dude , either your my brother or my animal spirit man, I wanna come and hang out bro my dad was a tv repair man and he's got an awesome set of tools man and we could build some stuff dude I love the channel keep up the organized mess my man
Sorry to hear about your sight, Dave. Do whatever you can...vision is a huge quality of life issue. My sweetheart has been legally blind for many years (some kind of chronic iritis), so, I know people get used to things, but that's no consolation. I don't envy you having to interface with the medical industry.
I have glaucoma in both eyes. I had a laser procedure to release pressure and now I’m off all eye drops. You definitely want to take care of it. Good luck
Dave, when you say (paraphrasing) that all but the most beefy acoustic guitars like a Guild pull up their bridge over time, would you put a Gibson J-200 in that category? Sound-wise that’s been one of my consistent favorite models (Greg Lake, Pete Townshend) but I would hold out for an acoustic that’s not hellbent on turning itself to toothpicks.
Hey Dave, Been watching you for several years now. Does Martin cover neck a neck reset if I am the original owner. I'm setting at 5/64" and I do my best to keep it humidified. It's 16 years old now. Wes/Denver Colorado
My ‘72 D28 has no truss rod. Only a square rod. They didn’t start putting them in till the ‘90s or just before. Unfortunately, it’s time for a reset. Have you seen the stu-Mac “heat stick” for popping necks? Thoughts?
My Mom lost her sight because of that G word. She didn't even know she was blind in one eye, then it was all about keeping it from spreading to the other eye. Go see a specialist. Your eyes are worth it. Smoking some pot helps reduce the eye pressure, so I would smoke a lot. Take care Dave.
When the sun shines, and winter loses its grip, its hard not to go fishing, or forest/beach walking, anything that takes ya fancy really, make hay while the sun shines, fix guitars when the clouds close in, fishing usually wins with me, unless I've an old westone to tweak back to awesomeness......
Dave I had a chance to buy an ovation for 90 bucks but it was dropped and the top is separating from the fiber glass back. What would be a good glue to use.or is it totalled?
Just wondering Davey, on a ding like this one would it help to place a drop of water in the depression to pre-dampen the grain damage prior to the steam process? Good health to ya buddy!
Hi Dave love the channel , wee question, we don’t use inches here in the uk we use millimetres, for string height from the 12th fret my gauge shows 2 -2.5 millimetres I’m wondering if that’s right and is that from fret wire to the under side of the string? Oh and it’s a bass lol
We changed to metric in Australia, years ago. My schooling and trade was in imperial measurement, my lathes are imperial, so are my taps, dies, etc, so wherever I can, refuse to go metric.
I have bought a brand new Flying V made by a brand called Quincy and it’s a really cheap one but wondering if anybody could help, my 5th string isn’t set up properly and when I play the 6th and 5th string at any fret it plays fine but with 4th and 5th it goes sky out of tune further up the neck I go and all other string combinations perform fine it’s just the 5th and 4th on any fret together from about the ninth fret becomes increasingly out of tune.any ideas?
Good luck with your eye issue Dave. I feel ya a little, just went to bifocals this past week, never worn glasses in my 51 years. Not sure which is worse vision or hearing - both suck so far for sure.
Hello there, for my D18 (2021) I use 13 gauge. Now I mostly play with fingers including the strumming. What in your opinion should be the numbers at the 12th fret. Note: I often downtune ½ or 1 step. Thank you.
Hi, Dave, I have an epiphone with a tune-o-matic bridge. I have one string that's buzzing all the way down the neck. I changed the string and it improved slightly but it's still buzzing. I just moved up a gauge in strings and I re-adjusted the truss rod and bridge. I'm still getting the buzzing on that one string (the A string). Any suggestions?
What string? Try to isolate where the string buzz occurs. Is it at the bridge, somewhere on the fretboard or near the nut and headstock. Without knowing that, you can't sort the problem out. From what you say I'd guess you have an upper fretboard hump or else some break angle or hardware issues at the bridge saddles. There's also a small chance your pickups are way too close to he stings but that's doubtful. Hope it helps.
Always learning from your channel, Dave. A friend has a Takamine 12 string that has bellied quite a bit - I saw this remedy advertised - ruclips.net/video/snReOgLwP9Q/видео.html. Your thoughts?

Sorry to hear about your vision. Hope everything works out. Learned a lot from watching your videos. You're my favorite guitar repair man.
Praying for the eyes David! Great video.
Thanks, and good luck with your health!
Hope your eyes keep on ticking; glad to see you working on a nice guitar for a change.
Good health with your eyes, be good Dave.
Gooch Street Body Shop. "You dent 'em, we steam 'em."
Dave, lack of ambition well I woke up this morning, and I got myself a beer.
Very sorry to hear about your eyes Dave - I'm facing a similar diagnosis myself. I guess it's all part of growing OLD!
I hope you have your eyes for many years to come.
Hope that next eye appointment goes okay for you Dave and the results are positive news
You are on my prayer list.... it will work out in your favor my friend.
Hope all goes well with your eyes, Dave!
Wish you well Dave😜
Thanks, I have the exact same guitar! Glad to hear the numbers. LR Baggs too!
sorry to hear that Dave I have learned a great amount from watching your vids keep up the good work!
Hey Dave, don't sweat the narrow angles. They'll likely do a YAG PI laser, and you'll be good to go. (quick and easy in-office procedure) Cheers!
Best of luck Dave.
Your intros are great!
Love ya Dave!

That's a real factory flaw. It's unfortunate you bought a brand new guitar like that, but I know other people who have.
Hope the best for you eye problems Dave...it sucks getting old I know first hand
I have glaucoma too. The drops they give you work very well,,, every day though,,, every day. Good luck on that pal.

Dave, do you measure string hight at the top of the string or the bottom? Love your videos. Good luck with your eyes. Wish you the best! Cheers
General idea is to measure from the bottom of the string.

Dave's kidding he likes to watch the world burn through use of a Bic lighter.
There is an Ovation owners forum on the web. They use Loctite industrial epoxy for replacing tops, bridges, and loose necks.

Buy Japanese guitars, everything is metric which is why some parts are not interchangeable.

What measurement are you looking for neck relief on this D 28?

Hey I got some one ov Dees but it's don't got some no truss rod iite.ii bees too old for dat.
What a horrible place for a strap button. And who would drill out a D-28 ? Shame.
Well actually, that position for a strap button secures a guitar very well. Especially for a working musician.
