hey Kent, Thanks for putting out these videos I cant express to you how much they really helped me. I was lost on what the state was looking for on the SOQ and the interviews. But after watching your videos I got several interviews and got hired to my top pick. Keep pushing yourselves everybody and you'll get the job you want

Hi Kent, I’ve been watching your videos and I had an outstanding interview on Wednesday with EDD and my first referral person just told me that they called him so I’m super excited and hope I get the job!!!
Thank you so much for making this video! The A, B, C pay ranges were so confusing. I tried to research it and I couldn't find any information about who gets paid A, etc. I appreciate you making these helpful videos
I just got an offer for AGPA. Definitely looking to do some good work and advance as quickly as possible while exploring the different jobs that the state offers. Thank you for making these videos and for what you do.
HR state professional here :) I’m new in my role but your content is extremely helpful and SPOT on! Once you get in with the state, become best friends with your personnel specialist. I would advise having their direct manager contact as well. There’s so much to take advantage of as a state employee. Mothers or expecting, mothers especially! The FMLA program is great and there are specific thing you can do to take time off but STILL accrue leave benefits, that doesn’t really happen in the private sector. I’m kind of blown of the knowledge I’ve gained since being in this role. My mom has also been with the state over over 30 years and is set to retire early in 2 years. She’ll return with the state got another 3 years as a retired annuitant, essentially doubling her salary
Thanks for the positive feedback/reinforcement for an HR professional. I know my process/methods work based on lots of positive results from my coaching clients and video watcher comments. Still, it's very nice to hear from someone actually in an HR role that my content is "spot on"! Thanks for your time and effort! ;=_

Hi Kent ,I need your assistance for my first time applying for a state of California job - I have a 4 year bachelor's degree and 2 years of experience plus many other volunteering experiences. I am thinking of a staff service analyst job. Can you please help me ?
Hi Kent, Thanks for all the information. It's been very helpful in the application process. In your experience, have you found the Staff Services Analyst (SSA) Classification to follow the AGPA pay in terms of starting at pay range A and then increasing annually or has there been cases which start at pay range B or C as well? Thanks again!
Very good question. In contrast, all folks hired into AGPA start at bottom pay range A; folks with more than the minimum amount of experience required for SSA may start at a higher pay range. Email me for a 15 minute one-on-one coaching session and I'd be glad to expand. :-) kentdills@yahoo.com
Kent - two questions. 1. What does it mean when your application changes from "Submitted" to "Active"? Also, is it advisable to reach out directly to the hiring unit contact in the job posting to emphasize your interest in the position?
When Final Filing Date arrives, all applications that met the requirements for being complete change from Submitted to Active status. Hopefully your application will be selected for invitation to interview. Good luck on that but I recommend not reaching out to Hiring Unit Contact. It won't help your chances IMHO. Hope this helps! ;-)
I have an interview coming up next Friday for the state for the information technology department and I would like to do your one on one mock interviews if that’s possible how can I get in contact with you?
Hello, I have not been able to take the typing test because I work M-F 8-5 which is when all of the testing centers are open. On Cal Careers it says it will accept an online test but I cannot find one that meets their requirements, do you (or anyone here) know of an acceptable website to take a typing test online?
Erika Baldwin, I'm pretty sure you can take the online typing test using the following URL since it offers free practice, test and certificate. You'll use the certificate if and when the HR Certification folks for the Departments you apply for at the State of California ask for it. Note: They may not even ask. Good luck with your applications! www.ratatype.com/faq/How-can-I-get-a-typing-certificate/
The pay differs based on which classification the job (and job posting) is referring to. The pay range is listed on all job postings so look there for specifics. I'm not an HR expert, and never had an intermittent job under my supervision; but, my understanding is this just means it's less than full-time. Looks like the example you're referring to is listed at 1500 hours (which is about 70% of the time). Not bad and a good way to get started (what I call the "foot in the door" strategy). You'll just have to see if the 70% could work for you. You could start at this type of job and then immediately start searching and applying for full-time jobs too! Hope this helps! Good luck!! ;-)
Hi Kent! I'm a new grad and I get an interview next week. Just wonder is there any room for salary negotiation or I can only take what they'll offering? Thank you!
Does this also apply to equipment operator 1? I just applied twice with caltrans, I’ve been a trucker for the last 7 ish years but would like to switch things up. Not sure what they would think?
Sure. 1. Please watch my video on this channel "How to Ace the Interview". 2. Email me at kentdills@yahoo.com for a 1-on-1 "Interview Prep" coaching session! Hope this helps! ;-)
Not exactly sure what you're asking. A pay range has a start and end. Or bottom and top. An employee hired at the bottom of the range (fairly typical) would progress to the top of the range in 5 equal increments over their first 5 years. Not including any Cost of Living adjustments/offsets (COLAs). Hope this helps! ;-)
Every job listing has a range. My question is that a starting range? Say it says 10,000-12,000 Does that mean you can be hired at anywhere from 10-12k starting, or that it starts at 10k regardless and you will move up to 12k over xx years?
To put it simply - no. All brand new to the State folks starting as AGPAs start at the bottom of the range. VERY LOW probability exceptions apply and I won't discuss here.
It’s based on the job and the Department. Corrections and Rehabilitation does a very thorough criminal records check. Other departments do a basic criminal record check. At any department, if handling financial records, budgets, actual money is involved, then a credit check is done too. With some positions, some type of physical and medical record review is done. Hope this helps! :-)
@@calistatejobcoach thank you for your reply sir. When you say “basic criminal check”, does that mean a standard California 7 year check or a live scan/fingerprint check?
@@emilioquintero6973 , very few folks get the live scan/fingerprint check done. I never did. So I'm guessing other folks just get what you're calling the standard California 7 year check. Just my guess. I was a functional manager not an HR professional.

So basically it a state job is listed for an analyst, the salary awarded for a new will almost always be the lowest salary listed in the job listing? Is there any room for negotiation? Any wiggle room if the position is being re-listed because they had trouble finding candidates?
@@ralphburnette , if the analyst position is an Associate Governmental Program Analyst (AGPA) classification, then salary range A is applicable and there is no wiggle room.
