My love affair with the Batis lenses started when I got hold of a mint condition, second hand 25mm. Then I managed to get a demo 18mm which had been on the shelf at a camera store at a nicely reduced price. Then I sold my 16-35 f4. There is something about the quality of the pictures from the Batis lenses which may not come out on RUclips videos, but which is there when you look at the pictures. Another point which I find important, is that the Batis lenses are lightweight and balance well on the camera. We all have our hangups and mine is that a mirrorless camera should not have big and heavy lenses that make the camera front heavy and unbalanced. The Batis lenses are a perfect balance between lens speed and weight.
Thanks Jay. As always a great review of a fantastic lens. I own batis 25 and 85 and I'm thinking to add the new 40. Zeiss, with batis lenses, have created a spectacular line.
This lens resolves my a7riii landscape images with great results. I've also used it for astrophotography and am very happy with it. Well-made and light weight!
Mr. Kattan It’s at least noticeable sharper , but the Laowa has less distortion. I’m about to get the Zeiss this week. The Rokinon AF 14mm might also be a good option, but I want this size.
Nice lens and good review, but when you make those qualitative statements about the "popping" colors etc, it would be really nice to have the same shot taken with a "lesser" but otherwise comparable lens to really illustrate what you mean. Yes, the pics look very nice, but how would they compare to, say, a Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 Art at 18mm? I know it's not always possible to have a comparable lens to hand, but I hope you get the point about making qualitative statements about a lens in isolation.
I have done the exact thing and compaired both with each other. Well off course no comparison sigma is hard, flat and artificial, the zeiss just flows without any stress and extreme detail.
Been using since 2016 and it’s one of my fav lens. But this lens have a weird noise and vibration issue. Mine started having the issue since around 2018 and suddenly stopped after a while. Recently it started again. So those who are planning to buy this lens, I just wanna let you know. Without that issue this is a very great lens.
Awesome review. I have an a6500 with the 16-70mm lens. I need a wider lens for real estate and indoor videography on a Ronin-S. Do you think this will be wider on a cropped sensor and have a great viewing angle? I really want this lens since I can get it for a great price! TIA
Jay, what's the name of the beer with the atom logo again? You mention it at 10:23. Hard to make out how you're pronouncing it in the video. Thanks in advance for being an enabler!
Equilibrium, Harvester of Science.... Sorry for the delayed reply Remy and I don't think think they make this beer anymore as they continue to evolve their brews... They actually deliver now to a lot of places: www.toasttab.com/equilibrium-brewery-2-8-south-street/v3#!/order
Yes, the thens has a 77mm filter tread and I recommend a High quality ND filter to match the killer optical quality this lens offers! The one I used for this review is here: bhpho.to/2Qcd1W7 Also, see here for more 77mm ND filter options: bhpho.to/2IVNQrR
I really would like this lens but the 1300 price tag doesn't justify especially in 2021 when there are such amazing alternatives like Sony GM 14 with just a couple of 100$ more. Also, there are so many zooms with better IQ in the same price range, I think Zeiss needs to bring down the cost of this lens to at least 1000$ for me to buy one.
I totally hear ya, but it's worth the money to those that want the image quality produced. Zeiss knows this as well, so the price will probably remain the same for a long time. IQ is measured in not just sharpness, but also contrast, color, bokeh rendering, build quality, etc... I appreciate your sharing your thoughts Saurabh, have a good day! Jay

Nice review as always! I'm really trying to choose between this and the new Sony 24 1.4 for astrophotography...hard choice!
Great video, I have the 18mm Distagon for my 5D MkIV, I am switching to Sony and purchasing the A7r IV so will definitely be picking this up!
Nice to see my work here - yes i currently work at Zeiss :)
Awesome!!!
Nice, it would be nice to see some samples that would show the resolution in the corners.
Love the Beer King! That was a great surprise
Oh yeah ;)
Nice review. This lens is always well rated, you confirm it. Thanks !
dude this is so clean!
Nice review . . Thank You !
Great video. I’d like to cover all my bases and get a combo of these lenses 18mm/40mm/85mm. Would they be wise? How was 18mm in APS-C crop mode?
I pick 24 1.4 over this one, jeez this one gonna my next lens after im done my studio !!!
lovely lens
Hi there, probably a little bit late, but did you got with 24mm GM or 18mm Zeiss? Trying do decide what I want to go with.
I have 24 already did you go with 18 or 24?
Awesome review and all the work you are doing. Appreciate it a lot!
I got it, today :)))
Hi Jay, do you know if the information display on Batis lens (2:05) will also be showing on camera when looking into viewfinder & LCD?
Yes, and depending on which display mode you are using, you will have way more info as well ;)

It's going to be narrower. Your best bet is Sony's 10-18mm f4.
we love your reviews!
Awesome review thanks so much!
My pleasure and thank you for the comments ;)
I think that SEL1224G is a better option :)

if i use f2.8 and above (f3.2-f22) with AF-S,AF-A mode the lens makes a little bit noise when looking for focus. is this normal?
Yes, Batis lenses make a little noise when focusing.
Review the 24mm GM 🤙🏼
Can i use nd filters?
