8th grader who lives near Houston, who really really really wants to make state in my highschool career. I made 1st chair in the region this year, as opposed to not even making region in 7th grade. Thank you for this video; your tone is so clear and heavenly.
Use a metronome and play it at quarter note = BPM 40, 50, 60, 72, 80, 92, 100, 112, 120, 132, 144, 152, 160 172, 186,194, 200 ,.by the time you have played this many time you'll be perfect. The more you play it the better you know it.
I like this video of the etudes much more than some of the others I've listened to on youtube. I really like the way you express yourself, articulations and dynamics are great. I'm a junior going to area from region 18 (5a). My audition will be jan 18 so I hope in this week I can try to at least speed things up in my 1st and 3rd etude. I'm taking them a little closer to 105-110 right now which seems like all my tongue can handle. In your opinion is 105-110 on those etudes a good tempo or should really try to speed them up? Thanks
Play them at the tempo that is most comfortable but try to go at least 108. And speed isn't that important, it is about cleanness. I made it playing them at 110 while everyone else went 120-125. But I was cleaner and had more dynamics. Make sure you don't try to play faster than you are able to or you will do a lot worse.
Quick question, In number #26, I've noticed you play pretty articulate on the staccato 16th notes, but I've seen other videos play it smoother. I assume you prefer it more articulate but what would you recommend? This question applies to #30 as well. Thanks
It's a good question. Staccato should always sound distinct, but the airstream should connect everything. Try to find a balance between not sounding legato and not just smacking the crap out of it... because that's not tasteful either. Also keep in mind that not all recordings have great microphones, and that can affect the sound a bit.
Nope, I'm not circular breathing on any of these. For lots of tutorials on things like that check out my instagram page at /geeeelok - I put up how-to videos all the time.
I'm using a Vandoren MO Ligature. But keep in mind that your lig doesn't really affect your sound TOO much... the reed and mouthpiece matter more, and ultimately what you do with your face and airstream affect the tone much more than your equipment does.
I'm using a Yamaha Custon EX. And yes! I'll be putting a couple of videos up soon with tips for all three etudes. For now, just focus on the following: - Learn two measures a day from each etude and you'll be done in 3 weeks - For Etude 1 focus on voicing the large intervals; practice them slurred until they sound right, then add tongue - For Etude 3 start to push the tempo on the tonguing even now; it'll take some people a while to build up tongue speed. More coming soon...

Are you circular breathing by any chance and if you are how?

綺麗だなぁ〜
Are you double tounging on #26 or #30?
Nope, just regular single tongue.
Wow, your single tongue is so quick and clean! Do you have any tips or practice exercises to recommend?
What ligature are you playing on, I usually play on a rovner dark but for auditions I'm looking for more of a soloist sound.
I'm using a Vandoren MO Ligature. But keep in mind that your lig doesn't really affect your sound TOO much... the reed and mouthpiece matter more, and ultimately what you do with your face and airstream affect the tone much more than your equipment does.
HoustonSax ok thank you
You are a god.
Amazing! May I ask the setup on this?
Yamaha EX, Selmer S90 mouthpiece (180 facing), and Vandoren v12 reeds, size 3.
What saxophone are you using? And do you have any tips for playing the 1st and 3rd

HoustonSax Thank you!!!
It was good but you don’t have to move so much while you play xD
PaperRack it’s called playing with emotion.
David Sanchez my guy, this music has no groove (in my opinion that is) therefore there is no need to sway like that.
It helps if you know what you're doing. Try it
Are you seriously gonna tell a saxophone professor how he should be playing?
Chill out everyone dang. Its a public opinion.
