Hatching Redfoot Tortoise Eggs

- To me and hundreds of other turtle and tortoise keepers, there is nothing more rewarding than hatching eggs on your own. We've hatched dozens of tortoise eggs over the years and it just never gets old, even with Redfoot tortoises which are relatively common.
In this video I go through the steps I take from when a tortoise egg just starts to pip, through the hatching process, and into it's enclosure. It's a process that normally takes days and a lot of patience. One thing any tortoise keeper knows - patience is required. They do nothing fast and the hatching process is no exception.
The process I use to hatch eggs is only one way to do it. Lots of keepers use similar methods and lots of others do it differently with great results. If you're interested in breeding and hatching you own tortoises one day my best advice to you is to set forth first on learning before doing. Read as many articles as you can, watch as many RUclips videos as possible, and reach out to others who are doing it to find a process that works not only for the species you keep but also a process that works for you in your own situation.
Finally, in the video we are hatching redfoot tortoise eggs. It's relatively straightforward as long as you adhere to certain parameters such as proper temperatures, humidity, etc. However there are hundreds of chelonian species out there and most have unique incubation needs. Some need a diapause, others need more or less humidity, etc. Do your homework on the species you keep before attempting to breed your tortoises. The rewards of good research are well worth the positive result in the end.
Thanks for watching!
I gotta visit you one if these days learn from you in person! Awesome video.
Yes sir! Always looking to share ideas.

Nice cherry, I mean redfoot! 🔥
Thanks! Some people are partial to cooters though. ;)
@@BonsaiTortoise some ARE very partial to cooters!
Awesome video, you deserve more subs definitely
Omg they’re so cute, I love tortoises :D
When? The month when she gives us the eggs?
What happens if you take them out of the broken egg?
Hatching is a process of incubation so sometimes just because it pips it doesn't always mean they're ready to come out just yet. It could take up to a week to hatch so it's best to just be patient.
What is calcium rich food for Indian Star Tortoise?
Almost looks like a cherry
Isn't that one cool! Def not a cherryhead but cool nonetheless. I think we need more definitive data on RF localities.
@@BonsaiTortoise I want to go down to Columbia to visit some family and research the “yellow” redfoot!
@@hoosier_turtles_and_tortoises We need something more definitive on redfoots. Like we have with testudo. Graeca and Hermanni aren’t perfect but waaayyy more definitive than RF. And I’m not convinced the yellow ones are a locale.
