I'm a Knowledge Student and I'd love to be on the road ASAP , however not at the expense of dumbing down the standards. When I get out there I wanna be the same standard as all the other guys on the road.
I'm yet to see a professional from any job e.g. Doctor lawyer teacher etc talk so passionately about their profession and the challenges they face, the way this man has
I'm happy that Uber is being banned in London. Ubers bootleg drivers are unprofessional and unsafe. Drivers have mastered The Knowledge for generations. Those who can't master it should not drive. Let the standards remain high.
I am an Uber Driver who worked in Nottingham for 2 years, didn't know a single road within a month you get to know the basics, 4-6 months you pretty much know everything and in a year you learn mad shortcuts. I moved back to Manchester and here they have a knowledge test and it seems hard but driving for 2-3 weeks literally 10-11 hours a day, I've nearly mastered all of central manchester this is 7 days a week and 10-11 hours of driving. If a year goes by I'll know it all! Don't be disheartened. I am doing Uber eats right now so as I earn, drop off and drive more and more. I learn the roads and earn money! When I don't get requests I usually drive around until I do. I also ask myself what is the name of this street and if I get it wrong, that's £1 less on my todays lunch. It's actually fun if you make it, sometimes you forget but the more and more you drive. You the roads, the image and name will lock into your mind forever! I would advise the same for london drivers! Do delivery driving while learning!
Exactly. I'm not a Black Cab Driver but I respect them, they're all legends, they've been doing this since the 1800s. Uber sucks in my opinion. The Knowledge Test is awesome
Couldn't agree more with Steve. I usually take black cabs they might be more expensive, but it's worth it for the service. I got in a mini cab recently with some friends. First thing the driver asks is the post code for his sat nav. He didn't have a clue where we wanted to go, fortunately we did and had to direct him all the way. If they are going to look at standards then they should raise them for mini cabs, they should at least a basic knowledge of the area they're working in.
I got a Uber from Heathrow to Camberley in Surrey and his sat nav wasn't working, to makes things worse he didn't even know how to get out of the carpark or even know how to get onto the M3. Probably passed his driving test on a Elephant 🐘🤣
Fuck a duck, I wish we had The Knowledge as the standard here in New Zealand. As it stands, any joe can come in here from overseas and set themselves up as a taxi jock with minimal effort. I commute 108 km per day right through Auckland city (Hibiscus Coast to Auckland Airport) and much, if not most, of the taxi driving is pretty bloody budget. My feeling is that by setting the bar so high and demanding so much effort on the part the drivers, the Association is going to attract only those drivers who will feel totally invested in the service and justifiably proud of the green badge.
320 runs? It used to be nearly 500, didn't it? It might sound harsh but surely you would expect a driver to know where he's going and the shortest route.
@@l4rjy Yeah, all right. Can you post a link about that then, substantiating it? Any would be cabbies would be ready to retire by the time they had passed that.
Do Londoners really want a shit tax dodging mini cab service that will eventually be far more expensive than a black cab ? A cab drivers keep their eyes on the road. A mini cab driver is on a sat nav and bumping into things.
Any fool can use a satnav, but not everyone has the ability to memorise streets, learn map reading & do route-planning, in their heads & on-paper, do they? A sat-nav will tell you the street location. Actually being there & knowing where everything is,is far more accurate than a piece of technology. The same goes for refuse collection driver or collector.Anybody can use a satnav for the roads, that a certain beat-route is on, but you will waste time unnecessarily, if you don’t know:the layout of the road, the amount of bins & houses, etc & planning the roads in good order, is very difficult, as opposed to knowing where all the roads are, in your head. The same goes for a cabbie as he or she, plans the route & has a backup plan of shortcuts, (if say an accident happens?:-), by taking the shortest & fastest route, etc.
@@MarineAqua45 Most people looking for transport don't really care about a drivers "knowledge" capabilities. He only wants to get from A to B in the most cost effective way possible and if that means taking a Uber or minicab than so be it. Have you ever wondered why black cabs are going out of business more and more while Ubers (even if Uber gets banned something else will come along) are growing all the time. Make no mistake, I love taking the black cab since it's clean and spacious and the drivers are polite and helpful people and it's clearly a London trademark but you must stare realism in the face. Within 10 years there'll be none left. It's a shame for all those who have studied for so long and will have no "black cab income" to show for it.
I drove in Birmingham for a living and I can tell you that a satnav only does so much, getting around traffic hotspots, closed roads, building renovations, street knowledge makes a massive difference, and I imagine it applies more so than ever with London.
Standards must be maintained at all costs, that's why London Cabbies are the best in the World.

Uber is crap, Knowledge Test is best
how'd it go in the end mate
Well said Original, hope you made it. Cheers
There's a video on RUclips of that very taxi driver up against a guy with sat nav on the same route. Mr McNamara won by 33 minutes.

If only
Still not banned lol

Take’m outta central London in to the suburbs without a sat nav guarantee it they’ll get lost.
Sat navs suck
With sat navs you don't need that amount of information in your head, they aren't driving horses and carriages in victorian London anymore.
An excellent advocate. I wish my industry had someone like him to speak for us.

good job by Steve McNamara there. he made a persuasive case

What's wrong with him using the sat nav if he can get you to your destination? He didn't ask you to direct him did he.
It’s not like black cab drivers pay full tax anyway, plenty of “cash jobs” or under inflated income overinflated expenses etc
I got a Uber from Heathrow to Camberley in Surrey and his sat nav wasn't working, to makes things worse he didn't even know how to get out of the carpark or even know how to get onto the M3. Probably passed his driving test on a Elephant 🐘🤣
“On an elephant”
Uber have got all the drunks off the night buses that's why there driving about empty.
Cheapskates not cab users.
A poor mans taxi.
Sat nav is complete bullshit I crashed my car because of a sat nav
something's wrong. average age of 55. Five percent under 35...
There aren't enough 10-year old brain surgeons or 5-year-old airline pilots. Discrimination.
Pick an argument with a cabbie have a bad day 🤔

Young people dont want to spend 2 4 years of study just to be a taxi driver , its not worth it
London cab is the best in the world no gps and they know short cut I hate to use uber they suck drive suck and don’t know where to go
Tfl will scrap the knowledge in coming years, they will make it alot easier
No they should never scrap it
I think the knowledge is silly and I completely agree that it's archaic. But hey, I just go for uber or some other mode of transport.
So you go for a more expensive form of taxi, instead of a proper taxi?
keep destroying everything that made the country great, well done. and to uber users stop using uber.
whats the point of the Knowledge when theres Satnavs?
Satnavs suck
would you let a man with screwdriver rewire your house or want a qualified electrician get the picture
