Loved the history here. A lot I didn’t know. I always heard Michigan was very prejudiced against Notre Dame for being Catholic and that was a big factor in their hatred of us. As for continued independence, our recently retired Athletic Director I think put it like this: so long as there’s still a clear path to the playoffs, and we can still schedule our biggest rivalry games (USC, Stanford, and Navy), Notre Dame will remain independent. It’s also worth noting that Notre Dame’s exclusive NBC deal does indeed make a ton of money for the school, and that tv football money pays for every other sport at ND to exist, many of which we also have excellent programs in (I believe our fencing team is regularly #1 in the nation for instance). So if there were ever a serious money issue with being independent, and joining a conference would clear that up, I guarantee we’d jump right in, just to keep the other sports afloat.
A couple of the Big Ten schools - Purdue and Mich State - ignored Yost and scheduled the Irish anyway; Michigan State in the 19teens and early 20s and Purdue throughout the 20s and early 30s. But, to your point, it’s why Notre dame continues to schedule those two schools, off and on: ND remembers.

No reason to. They can remain an independent. They can play several Big 10 teams every year. The rivalry with Purdue and Northwestern should be on the schedule every year with UM and MSU.
