    Notre Dame is in the Big Ten for ice hockey, but that seems to be a marriage of convenience, as most conferences don't sanction the sport.

    • @Lcngopher
      @Lcngopher 3 месяца назад +4

      Thats only because penn state decided in 2010 to make their mens and womens ice hockey teams ncaa d1 teams in 2012 so then the big ten would have enough teams to guarantee one team in the tournament. The conference then started to sponsor the sport, killing the ccha in the process, of which notre dame was a member. Also, i dont think the acc sponsors ice hockey so its the best choice they have

      That is because of the Big Ten's core geography. The Northeast did not have big land grant universities. So, Harvard, Yale, Boston College, Boston University, Maine, etc. formed a hockey conference.
      Penn State upgraded to scholarship hockey from club hockey due to the Pegula family. At the time, only Mercyhurst played DI hockey in PA.
      Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, Michigan State and Minnesota have long established hockey programs. I think Illinois started one. The Indiana schools, Iowa and the new additions don't have varsity hockey.

    Loved the history here. A lot I didn’t know. I always heard Michigan was very prejudiced against Notre Dame for being Catholic and that was a big factor in their hatred of us. As for continued independence, our recently retired Athletic Director I think put it like this: so long as there’s still a clear path to the playoffs, and we can still schedule our biggest rivalry games (USC, Stanford, and Navy), Notre Dame will remain independent. It’s also worth noting that Notre Dame’s exclusive NBC deal does indeed make a ton of money for the school, and that tv football money pays for every other sport at ND to exist, many of which we also have excellent programs in (I believe our fencing team is regularly #1 in the nation for instance). So if there were ever a serious money issue with being independent, and joining a conference would clear that up, I guarantee we’d jump right in, just to keep the other sports afloat.

      A couple of the Big Ten schools - Purdue and Mich State - ignored Yost and scheduled the Irish anyway; Michigan State in the 19teens and early 20s and Purdue throughout the 20s and early 30s.
      But, to your point, it’s why Notre dame continues to schedule those two schools, off and on: ND remembers.

An all out ban of their members from playing ND until they join a conference will ND swallow their pride and finally join up. With the recent Big10 and SEC “truce” could happen very soon or never at all. Time will tell.
