If someone close to you dies, it can be devastating. Reading about the deaths of thousands of strangers, centuries in the past does not have this effect. I have been lucky. I have never had to flee my homeland, rebuild my house, or bury a friend because of war. War for me is something I study at a distance. It is something interesting rather than terrible. Here I am talking about what is the greatest tragedy of war _for me_.
