I’m just patiently waiting on War Pigs Live in Paris 1970 😎 other than that… I mean they’re always good. Iron Man is good, NIB… etc but you really can’t go wrong
Coming up!
Add The Wizard to your Must Play list, Andrew. First album brilliant track not known by the masses.
The wizard has some of the sickest fills ever put to vinyl! 👽😎✌️🤘
Can't wait to hear it!
And Ozzy's surprisingly good harmonica! That first Sabbath album being a pure blues album is a real treat
Would love to see a Supernaut reaction. Great Sabbath song!
Pencils down. Pass your test papers to the front. This was the answer. The song is a Bill Ward showcase and even if you don't do a reaction video for it, as least I'd hope by now you've given it a listen.
For the drums, I'd say Fairies Wear Boots, it has a sick drum track and it actually sounds jazzy to me, also the whole Volume 4 album is a drum jam, specifically I'd say Wheels of Confusion and Supernaut
Can't wait to hear it Zac
As an old git myself I watched them before they were famous, there was nothing like them before anywhere, I will leave others more expert than me to explain things like Iommi using banjo strings as his fingertips could not cope with guitar strings. They made their first album in a morning, they were touring Germany at the time drove back to the UK turned up at the studio, plugged their gear in turned up the volume and basically played their live gig, job done. They went back to touring Germany as they had no idea about anything to do with the studio work. It was only when they returned to this country that they heard that they were in the charts. Their most famous song paranoid was written and recorded in 2 hours as they were told they needed to release a single. It's a big rabbit hole to disappear down
That's absolutely amazing info. Thank you Keith
@@AndrewRooneyDrums fyi: guitarist had a few of his fretting digits compromised in work machinery!
When I seen them live way back, I thought Iommi had thimbles on his fingertips!
You MUST do Snowblind. The back of the beat drumming is superb
Thanks for the tip Paul. First I've heard that one mentioned
Oh hell yeah, yeap, and embroy/ children of the grave, since you are a drummer this one has a mf of a groove
Definitely snow blind. Very offbeat so I would love his comments
@@AndrewRooneyDrums SNOWBLIND... It's has a weird beat... I'd love to hear your comments. I've watched all your vids... Love em.
Behind the Wall of Sleep live in Paris 1970. Bill absolutely kills those drums.
Fairies Wear Boots by Black Sabbath Live in Paris 1970
I'm on it Gabriel!
Anything during their early works because Bill’s style is all jazz funk and modern R&B grooves
Blows my mind he plays like this
@@AndrewRooneyDrums one could say he started it all!
Into the Void, A National Acrobat, and Cornucopia have awesome drum parts. Might not be able to find live video of the latter two, but they all sound killer from the album versions.
Give Their First song a go BLACK SABBATH BY Black sabbath of first album also called Black Sabbath and was released on Friday the 13th .
Sounds like I gotta check out the whole album yup!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums YES its a must MATE
A national Acrobat
"Wasp / Behind the Wall of Sleep / Bassically / N.I.B.", Lord of This World, Children of the Grave
Warpigs, the wizard, Fairies Wear Boots
Thank you!
Welcome to the Bill Ward Rabbit hole LOL!!!! He has a feel that is something I have never heard duplicated. Absolutely perfect for that band and an incredible drummer. My vote is for Fairies Wear Boots.
I'm on it Trey!
Great pick.
Black Sabbath song, I don't know so minimalistic tone weighing so much, just mind-blowing
Plenty of Sabbath on the way!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums that's great, yeap, they had many hits, do yourself a great favor
100% backing a trip down a Sabbath rabbit hole... Hoping you'll do reactions to several of their songs! Keep up the great & fun work!
I think it has to be Symptom of the Universe for sheer wall to wall drumming and even variety, and a dark horse track which includes jazz drumming is Air Dance. Supernaut is also an excellent choice.
Bill plays the congas on Planet Caravan. Check out that one when you get a chance. It's a whole different sound from Sabbath
I have heard the Pantera version!
I would say a deep cut that’s over looked personally like Megalomania The Writ .
Snowblind!!! Supernaut, Children of the Grave, The Wizard, Fairies Wear Boots, Black Sabbath, NIB, Into the Void, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Dirty Women, honestly the entire damned catalogue. And those songs are all just from the Bill Ward/Ozzy era, the Ronnie James Dio/ Vinnie Appice era is a whole other musical monster, it's like Tony and Geezer formed a completely new band. They inspired an absurd amount of subgenres from heavy metal to thrash, doom, stoner, groove, you name it, it can be traced to Sabbath as long as the last word is "metal". Legends. So glad you're discovering them, I honestly assumed you were already aware of them because of how enormous their rhythm section is/was.
Oh yes, Mitch Mitchell and Bill Ward share many qualities although they have their own styles. Both started out as jazz drummers branching into their respective rock bands.
Yup I can hear that!
The other band from Classic rock that you may like to hear is Deep Purple. With songs like Highway Star, Speed King, Child in time and Stormbringer.
Try Fairies Wear Boots ( Come To The Sabbath )1970 Bill tears it up
Thanks Shaune! I'm hearing great things about this track
Check out California Jam 1974. Killing Yourself to Live, War Pigs, and others. Stunning daytime performance.
Can't wait Mark!
Children of the Grave - album version. The rototoms really make the song for me! They should've got Ozzy to play them for their live shows
Vol. 4 is their strongest album, IMO. Pretty much all those songs, minus FX and Changes, since neither have drums. But, Changes will surprise you. Laguna Sunrise is also percussion free, but it’s a beautiful track.
As much as the Never Say Die album is dissed, Johnny Blade is friggin' awesome. Then there's a song called Breakout that leads into Swingin' the Chain which is the second song that Bill Ward does the vocals. What's better than a double shot of Bill Ward on one song. Breakout is one of those songs that will make YOU say "come on".
Any song from this live Paris 1970 gig that yu find on Yotube is KILLER. NIB, Black Sabbath, Behind the Wall of Sleep, Paranoid, Iron Man ...they're ALL killer from this gig.
California jam 1974 black sabbath set an Awesome watch and would great to see your reaction 😁👍🇬🇧
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath has been called their finest hour
children of the grave, into the void, all of Master of reality. a great mind once told me you can only trust yourself and the first 6 Sabbath albums, God Speed
“NIB” from Paris 1970 would get my vote.
Rat Salad 1970 live, just keep listening to that Hand of Doom song live in 1970 and they rip into Rat Salad at the end.
It's in his video already.
Megalomania
Wheels of Confusion.
Cornucopia.
Hole In The Sky.
Cornucopia is so complex that Bill feared he would be fired if he didn't get it right.
Good morning from New England...Welcome to the Darkside Andrew...FARIES WEAR BOOTS is another jazzy bouncy song...The first 2 SABBATH albums were much more blues based than thier later albums..Much like JUDAS PRIEST SABBATH become heavy metal after thier first 2-3 albums...It could be argued that all the Sabbath songs are great because of Bill Wards drumming alone...Peace...
Thanks Brian!
Love your channel mate! Black Sabbath - War Pigs - 1974 California Jam is pretty great!
I'm on it!
War Pigs, the live version from 1970 in Paris, defined the genre of heavy metal
As a fellow drummer and fan of the channel I admire your humility and honesty as well as your format, personality, humour, content, and overall presentation skills. However, as a fellow teacher I think this kind of general knowledge/research/homework is expected as a qualification for your profession. Sure you can’t know every band and every song. However the history of the significant bands in the history of music (in this case the band many cite as being the birth of heavy metal) is quite honestly a very basic prerequisite in my opinion. Keeping up with current trends new players on the scene they have something unique to contribute in the pursuit of our art is also part of this homework category for any teacher of any instrument. Food for thought keep up the great work.
Ps. The next step from here in your early metal journey; I would recommend the greatest hits of Dio. The precise heavy groove of Vinny Appice is quite phenomenally underrated.
Thanks for the very thoughtful feedback.
I'd completely disagree with you however.
There are many drummers who recorded 1000+ records who never get mentioned. Most drummers wouldn't know their names.
Al Jackson Jr.
Charles Collins.
Jim Gordon.
The most recorded drummer in the history of music (for example) has NEVER been requested on my channel. Hal Blaine.
You can't say Bill is more impactful on music than Hal.
Could go on. JR. Jeff Porcaro. Vinnie.
None get mentioned or requested.
Zero chance of knowing every drummer.
One of my top 5 drummers of all time is Tony Thompson.
Who can name 5 songs he played on without googling him?
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I'm thinking you misunderstood my point, which was:
Knowing significant drummers from iconic bands in music history is a prerequisite.
Knowing lesser famous names is common amongst well-studied teachers and students alike. Part of the history and general knowledge of our instrument.
I'll add, that while the requests may come from kids and favour a general type.... what's the value in reaction comments and feedback if we can't offer professional feedback and further illustration using this knowledge?
Exposing our students to new names and sounds is a part of our job too. We do a lot us teachers. I hope they appreciate it! haha. Keep up the good work, and this was intended as positive critique and suggestion.
Snowblind!! Children of the grave, Heaven and Hell. Three of their best songs
Gypsy, such a great drum heavy song if of the Technical Ecstasy album
Fairies Wear Boots. Same time period. The 1970 Paris live version will work well for your purposes.
ELECTRIC FUNERAL PLEASE!!!
Symptoms of the universe
Thanks Topher!
Search live sabbath at the Cal Jam 1974.
The whole set is on yt and different songs, including War Pigs
🤘🏼
Excellent Manny
The Wizard
THANK YOU!
I know you already had BS week, but The Wizard from their first album is the essence of Bill Ward's drumming. Would love to see your reaction to it.
Symptom Of The Universe
Thanks Mark!
Voted the heaviest riff of all time ... the live version from 75, not 78, is ferocious
You'll love Bill Ward in War Pigs from Paris 1970. Really good upclose footage of Ward or Ward on meth for lack of a better descriptor. I'm 60, so I grew up on Sabbath & Zeppelin and all that great rock from that era.
Headless Cross, drummer is Cozy Powell
John Bonham’s favorite song by Sabbath was “Supernaut” .... Frank Zappa was also a fan of that song
Fairies Wears Boots
Into The Void
After Forever
Cheers Jaron
@@AndrewRooneyDrums also, for Bill Ward: Supernaught, Symptom of the Universe, Children of the Grave
How about the song Gypsy? That's a good song from Technical Ecstasy that starts off with drums
It is TRULY amazing how far reaching the influence of Sabbath is. Even though there was arguable Heavy Metal and Heavy Blues before them, as well as contemporaries like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, Uriah Heep, etc, they were literally the template for every metal band since, just as the Ramones were the template for all punk to come.
It’s interesting to note that Tony Iommi’s vision for Black Sabbath was always as a Progressive Rock band, a la Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Genesis, and King Crimson.
You would be hard-pressed to find a less-than-awesome track on the first 6 albums, as well as the first two Dio albums. War Pigs is the obvious choice that just about everyone will go to, as its one of the biggest and most famous songs, and its a damn good song. I would also say the first song, Black Sabbath, as well as Children Of The Grave, and Symptom Of The Universe.
I am one of those people who loves Black Sabbath music. Who also can’t stand any of Led Zeppelin music. One reason they were totally fake.
@@shspurs1342 ya, Ive heard that theory before. Its crap made up by someone jealous, but hey, its fun to pretend.
Thanks for the fantastic info Erik. This is gonna be a big rabbit hole for me
Hahaha oh I KNOW what a rabbit hole it is … and you wont regret a second of it! Im jealous, I wish I could re-hear them for the first time! But thats why these reaction channels are so popular … people reliving their first time :)
Yeah absolutely man well said, man I'm so excited looking at a man discovering a band ( especially a musician) and getting mind blown, I listen the paranoid song 95 then at a store got a video cassette of never say die live 1978 , and the damage is done, once and for all
Wheels of confusion such a epic song and sound or none ozzy era of black sabbath winds of valhalla with cozy Powell on drums and tony Martin on vocals
Changes...... sorry couldn't resist! how about "It's alright" - live version - Bill sings and drums.
Air Dance from 1978 LP

Not a Black Sabbath suggestion, but I'm surprised you haven't reacted to Austin Archey of Lorna Shore. King Ov Deception, Death Portrait & Darkest Spawn would be my 3 recommendations for you to react to. He is silly good.

Studio versions please
I'll get to them Donovan
Sadly with Sabbath the live video quality is always pretty rough, and the videos that are out there never seem to focus in on Bill much. Nice to see you growing a taste for the band though, Paranoid was a fantastic album to start with. I'll leave War Pigs and Iron Man off of my list of suggestions though, as massive overplaying on FM radio have diluted their message for me personally. Another of their big hits that didn't suffer from overexposure however was Children of the Grave. Great song with an up tempo drumline, Children of the Grave has all the elements you're looking for in a early Sabbath reaction. You're going to hear a lot of love for songs like Symptom of the Universe and A National Acrobat and let me say they're not wrong. All of my favorite Sabbath songs were never played on the radio much if ever, I'm just not sure they're a good starting point. Link to Children of the Grave live follows

Hi Andrew. You must listen to the studio version (Album version) of The Wizard. The Jazz chops on display on that one are great (there are live versions available but their tempo is too fast for me - the Album version has the best groove). Alternatively, here's a great live video of Fairies Wear Boots with a great shuffle groove throughout: ruclips.net/video/OJBQwOIMzDQ/видео.html
