  • Fall 2021 Wonder Challenge: Underwater Volcanoes and Lumi's Enlightening Adventure
This video was created for the Wonder Challenge for the Fall 2021 Environmental Science, Politics, and Policy course taught by Dr. Kwame Owusu-Daaku at the University of West Florida. We partnered with Elizabeth Eubanks and 6th grade students from Dixon School of Arts and Sciences. We created a video answering the question posed by the 6th graders “I wonder…how do volcanoes form underwater?”
Our video explains the formation of the Havre Seamount off the coast of New Zealand. Lumi is an angler fish is our main character, and she tells the story of the day she saw an underwater eruption. We include information about how the seamount is formed, explaining that first gas escapes, then magma rises up, and lava creates the mound as it rapidly cools in pillow formations underwater. We used PowerPoint to create a timed slideshow and recorded the voices of Lumi and Vamp to tell the story. The yellow narrative boxes give the students extra scientific information for reference.
