***** I disagree, there's nothing more complicated here than what was going on in Tomb Raider games at the time. Look at Tomb Raider 3 onwards on the PS1 and they're far more intricate than this.

cool man That would make a lot of sense. The footage around 30-50 seconds is feasible for a PS1 title, but the later shots are clearly out of its capabilities.
There's MGS 2 prototype from PSX, but in fact it runs on PC and was only intended to be later optimized for PSX ( ruclips.net/video/HTJuWmwEmzc/видео.html ), so it's possible that it's same with ICO.
If it has affine texture warping, it's ps1 footage. This was a quirk unique to ps1 as it didn't have a z-buffer. The few shots without it are most likely ps2
@@PiroKUSS Just had be a little pedant, huh? Graphically impressive is directly correlated to whatever hardware runs it. Ico, if released on the PlayStation, would've been one of the most graphically impressive games for the time. No more, no less.

They totally should make a game about solving puzzles in an abandoned castle like this was getting at. The final ICO was somewhat different, but that premise would really work.
He got the idea from a Japanese commercial that showed a woman holding a child's hand and walking through the forest. From February to June 1997, Ueda and an assistant produced a short three-minute pilot using Lightwave 3D on a Commodore Amiga 500.
It's interesting to see how many environments and areas from this demo made it into the final game. I'm half they waited for the PS2, though, it probably would have been a little limited by the PS1's hardware.
interesting. the ps1 yorda had horns, but ico didn't. also, there should have been a town around the castle, i would really like to play that version of ico
Insanely impressive for a PS1 game, but they did the right thing by going for PS2. The game wouldn't have such a big impact with blocky PS1 graphics (although I love them).
ICO was on CD-ROM, not DVD on PS2. Original PSone-version would have had huge impact for the system. Now, it is just not enough for PS2 on all games limited aspects. Let's hope prototype will be leaked to really do justice to Sony's original PSone hardware.
I'm pretty certain from 1:29 on ward is running on ps2, about the time they switched development and were testing the capabilities of the ps2. Really interesting to see ico playable in its ps1 version still, i hope one day a leaked iso becomes available for the public
Actually, those tree shapes and texture warping seem more akin to PS1 rather than PS2, though it's possible that in-game render of ICO was made on prototype PS2 architecture.
@@hasi706 Yeah, dynamic lighting on the PS1 was exceptionally rare. A lot of the lighting was baked into the environment. That's what made a game Luigi's Mansion so special; it was the first game to show off real dynamic lighting and do it consistently through the game without it hurting the performance.
its interesting that the original ico and child in last guardian were both hornless. i also wonder if there was any significance to the tattoos featured on yorda's original design since the last guardian child also seems to have them
***** Nope, there was a PS2 Prototype for TLG, or at least a showcase of the a similar video to the PS3 trailer but in PS2 format. But yes, I guess it would have a PS3 version as well now that its on PS4.
Not really, I saw a japanese video (On RUclips) long long ago. The video was released on 2006 o 2007. The video was shorter than this, but I remember perfectly the scene where Yorda touches Ico.
Just like Disney's the Haunted Mansion, being a PS1 game repurposed and upgraded for PS2 use must be the reason why PS2 Component out with the game is impossible. Funny, considering the PS2 version of Evil Twin Cyprien's Chronicles DOES work with PS2 Component yet it's older.
the music is so late 90s and early 2000s Japanese style it is freaking amazing. I love this time of game development in Japan.
So definitely listen Allison & Lillia Opening - Tameiki no Hashi ;)

and Parker & Stiles - Virgin Ocean

This makes me wish there was a playable version of the PS1 ICO somewhere.
You never know, it may be leaked someday, or discovered on some old debug unit.
Impossible. What you're seeing here could not run on a PS1.

Again watch a LP of Tomb Raider 3, that has dynamic lighting.
Ico looks impressive on PS1.
Even if I suspect some of the later scenes of this video to be running on a PS2
I've heard that the first half is the PS1 build and the later parts are the earliest PS2 build
cool man

someway i like this design more than the final

Interesting to see that Yorda has markings similar to the ones from the boy in TLG
This would’ve been one of the most graphically impressive games for the time if it was released on the original PlayStation.
Graphically impressive for the PlayStation only. Games like Unreal and Quake 2 had far more advanced graphics.

wow, this is kinda amazing for PS1 standards

because the poor old ps1 would explode running this game
That's so cool! I love learning about really really early elements of games which differ from the end product.
It's funny to see that some areas made it over to the final game, but look very different.
