It's the loss of consciousness part that scares me.
This is why I don't crush bugs. I couldn't even shut down Watson if I had the chance.
UnpredictableSB I feel similar. If an AI turns off and then on again, is it the same?
foxclown I do, but I feel like that's different. Like putting a computer to sleep.
I feel like consciousness is just a thing that's there and, when you die, it goes away.I don't know, I'm not sure if anyone knows.
Oh well.
foxclown I lack the mental ability to fully comprehend that situation. I decided to accept it due it being different that death.
foxclown I have been sedated before I remember right when I got sedated and I have flashed of a short while after.
I know I was conscious and living but anyway, I don't think it matters too much at the current moment of time. I'm no philosopher..
The original Star Trek came up with the idea of teleporters only because they did not have the special effects necessary to show shuttle crafts landing and taking off.
+silver fish Probably because this isn't CGP grey's video.
+Physics Videos by Eugene Khutoryansky yeah but if it is possible then why not make it happen in real life?
that is it will be a while before we can transmit a living organism without it having parts of its body reassembled just not right now also you will run into the problem what if you used it thus you are stored within the computer system but you died later on is it ethical to reassemble the atom direct image of you from before?
another question if it is possible to do so how will you stop a person or a country from making an army out of 1 person who all think the same way and all have the same body and the same history ?
another question will be how much power will it take to use it at all to transmit something bigger than an atom? after that is it possible to transmit a human of any age outside of the womb without requiring a plant full of power generators to feed it power?
if it is possible and done how do you stop people from using it to make a copy of you then keeping a copy of you while letting the real you go about your business? thus making 2 of you and thus cloning
i am sure that there will be many more questions closer to when it is seable to work in real life but thing about how useful and how destructive it can be if you can make anything or anyone out of an image on a computer somewhere and have it or the body work without any thing extra done to it or them
in short a 3D printable for entire living people but instead of taking hours to assemble them taking shorter and having it live at the end without any memory loss to the person
silver fish Or not.
+silver fish not everyone is going to go and watch it
+Physics Videos by Eugene Khutoryansky I don't think this is true.
In medieval times, people would say witches appeared out of nowhere and did witchy things.
This would be teleportation, even if they didn't use that exact word.

The "which one is you?" problem does not arise if you understand the fact that there is no "one" you. You are a different person each moment, an ever changing set, a process, rather than an entity, as is all life.
+The PC Security Channel the entire problem lies in the definition of "me/you". The term is simply not specific enough to avoid ambiguity in situations like these...
Oh, well. This is metaphysics. That means _per definitionem_ that it simply doesn't make sense.

So if there was a "cloned" version of you standing right in front of you, and a mad scientist says only one of you could live, you are just gonna say "shoot me"?

My clone would have already had different experiences than me and would no longer be "me". He would be very similar but stll not have the same memories as me so I would choose to kill him. However if he was cloned at the same instant (as I would be killed) then there would be no difference.

Grey might have released it first, but they were working on their videos at the same time. Jake (Vsauce3) was even reluctant to release his video because Grey just happened to get it out first.
What about Vsauce3's video?
+JavaPython which one is that?
+JavaPython Vsauce3 does not look like the type of channel that would naturally seek out or attract collaboration with channels like CGP Grey and MinuteEarth.
V looks focused on its host's personality, click-bait topics, and entertainment while CGP and Minute emphasize informative well-referenced presentations.
Vsauce3 does attractive to certain audiences as an introduction to a full blown, deeper, denser information of certain topics.
Well, Vsauce3 released a video covering this topic 2 days after CGP did. Jake was worried about people saying that he had copied CGP. and four videos, 2 by each Jake and CGP came of it, the science ones, and ones about them covering the same topic
JavaPython pretty sure he actually wasnt worried about people saying that he had copied CGP

Vscause3, CGP Grey and now MinutePhysics. It's been a great week.
A fictional type of teleportation I would be okay with is creating a "pocket space" within which you are contained, then creating another "pocket space" of the same dimensions at your destination, then finally swapping the contents of the two pocket spaces.
Now you're thinking with portals.

+Nick's Strength and Power I do this day or night. Get on my level.
Your voice is sooooo soothing
Thank you! I've thought about that for years. Maybe consciousness is encoded in the quantum state of brain.
To explain the above further in layman terms:
Our brains is like a computer hard-disk, we learns and stores memories in our lifetime.
If we 'reconstruct' the new brain at the new location, it is akin to transferring and storing all the information on USB drive and bringing it over and plunging in and storing it on the new computer.
The new computer - your new self now contains the same instruction set and software programs as the old computer - your old self.
But because your new self now has a brain of his own, your new self gains a separate individuality. Basically both of you are like twins.
Fair warning before you go to Grey's video, you might have an existential crisis. Would not recommend watching just before bed.
+Danielle Anderson I've had so many i no longer care whether my presumed existence is simulated, imagined or negligible in the long run. It's pretty liberating.
Is it bad that I never get an existential crisis from almost anything?
Consciousness is so weird.

Personally I've thought of it as a people Fax machine. I also feel like by the time this comes into practical use the no cloning rule may be circumvented. I feel that this is the one science top where it's inevitable to start debating the moral implications. Great video.
Haha, awesome! My mind immediately went to the No Cloning-theorem when watching Grey's video. Great to see you cover it :)
+JSQuareD Yeah but the no cloning theorem just apply for quantum teleportation ! In the star trek universe, it doesn't have to apply, as it's just scanning and reassembling.
omg i love it when i am subscribed to two differently owned channels and they reference each other

+Zwerggoldhamster Me too ! Stand up for Jake !! (because he can't... at least not for long)

I've had that question for so long. Thank you
I was just researching dimensions, space-time, wormholes, and time travel the other cause I was bored haha what a coincidence you guys uploaded this
The scary thing is no one would know if you die because of the exact replica. Even this replica wouldn't know and thinks it's you.
What if they teleported you without you knowing it.
Happens in a comic about future mercs. Schlock Mercenary. SPOILERS:
There are some Gates that allow FTL travel, but most of the galaxy is unaware the owners of the gate are creating exact duplicates of everyone who comes through, drugging them, interrogating them, then killing them. The original goes on blissfully unaware.
This race(the gate owners) uses the information to remain the most powerful in the Galaxy, because only the top richest/most influential members of other races even get to travel via the gates, so they have all sorts of political secrets and such on all the other galatic races.
So reaper isn't the same guy after he teleports?
Very good explanation of Quantum Teleportation. I'll make sure to show it to my grad students in my Quantum Information course.
thats a really good explanation, i'm glad i can comprehend what your talking about!
Jake from Vsauce3 also had a great video on this subject and is worth a watch.
I think that it would still be you on the other side of the teleportation. Because we are pure information. Information is what separates us from a rock, a tree or anything in the Universe. Our particles exist in many and all lifeless materials. But the information on how these particles are arranged, is the key to why we "exist" and have consciousness...
a few years ago i had the same conversation with someone in class about this same issue and we literally talked about this topic for a good 3 hours.
Pleasantly surprised to discover they still sell, and that practical use was found for, white-out.

+Clement Busschaert OMG soma came to my mind too.
+Clement Busschaert SPOILERS!!!
***** it comes up after 20min of gameplay, calm down.

+Clement Busschaert
SOMA SPOILERS BELOW
It's a similar concept but unrelated to teleportation. SOMA plays with the idea of self awareness and what would happen if a human conscience was copied onto a machine. The machine would feel like the same person (similarly to a teleported person) and would feel like they just changed bodies but the real person would look at the machine and believe it to be an impostor (much like what would happen if the teleporting person was left intact).
I still think the best way to teleport would be to use a device similar to the portal gun in portal. a quantum doorway is created that you can simply step through, and stay in one piece.
+alloria
I just imagined that each star-ship has a portal cannon in its weapon array that fires a portal onto an appropriate surface on a planet. the corresponding portal forms the ceiling of a special air-locked room on board ship.
climbing out of a hole in the ground, or being elevated out of it for each mission would have significantly changed episodes where the crew sneak into an area by teleporting behind some houses :-)
In real life the portal would be unstable and suck space into it like a black hole. So I wouldn't want to creat one.
+alloria So if that's so perfect, patent it. You'll be a billionaire, except you are talking about fake shit that doesn't exist, except in a videogame.
wouldn't that be like a worm hole?
+Isaac Espinosa
Yes, it's a wormhole.
Two problems:
Spacetime curvature around such a tight doorway would be like a small black hole, so you would be spaghettified as you approach it.
The math of the forces necessary to keep the wormhole open as you pass through it imply a need for negative energy, a purely hypothetical concept.
Negative energy also pops up in hypothetical warp drive concepts.
First Grey and Jake, now Henry! I love this continued (bizarre) conversation. :D
Every video is mindblowing
I got really sad and happy at the same time when I saw his video. I've discussed all those points many times over the last decade with friends and teachers, and now I see it getting so much attention on the internet. It's cool to see that the same thoughts I had are being discussed on the internet, but it's also sad to know that even if I had put this up to discussion back in the day, it wouldn't have reached this level of importance.
But can observers be teleported?
this is exactly what I commented under CGP grey's video and dumb people keep telling me that I am wrong with my philosophy of death. Now Henry speaks for me. What more can you ask for?
this is the question I've been asking myself forever!!!
wow, this was super interesting and a great addition to the theory.

+Vikings488 An improbable event for any single person, yet the thrill of being first is strong enough to ensure the first viewer would mention it in a comment so on the whole it's very likely...

Thanks for posting this Henry, I didn't know about Quantum Teleportation!
Glad you learned something new Louise
Err, thanks Jennifer.
I'm really glad you made this video because this is what annoyed me with CGP Grey's video so sweet work
couldn't the teleport machine just form 2 of you instead of one because it already has the information that it needed from dismantling you (so you could infinitely clone yourself once you dismantled yourself to get the information )
Does that mean there are no two particles in the exact same arrangement in the universe? Or does the "no cloning" only apply to entangled particles?
i think it only applies to the entangled particles (90% sure haha)
The no cloning theorem doesn't have anything to do with entangled states in particular. Though no, there are plenty of particles in the exact same state.
The no cloning theorem is that it is impossible to take any unknown state and clone it. You can easily clone known states.
I'm waiting for a MinutePhilosophy channel!

Wow! I mean Woooooow! That's awesome! Thanks for this vid. I really loved it for some crazy geek reason.
Hello, thank you for sharing this knowledge and keep up the good work. This video is amazing.
You only talked about creating 1 copy by destroying the original. Is it possible to create several copy by destroying the first one ?
im willing to try this out if it can be done , sacrifice life to science is totally worth it!
No don't do it
I've done it
And I am now dead
The problem with that would be that no real scientific gains would be made. If you are successfully transported then it is impossible to determine if it really is YOU on the other side or just someone who thinks and looks exactly like you
+Justin Chan I am sure your mother would agree....not.
+Justin Chan Nah, only if I worked with them on the project
@@Pisti846 no cloning theory it's later soon yet
Can you store the info so that you can clone using it? So instead of transferring a state to effect the state of some particles what if you store the info, use the info to create, and keep the info in case a person would want to create a new one?
This is cool. I am amazed to know that such principle exists! Although, it is kind of sad that you cannot have weird interaction with new/old you.
It creeps me out to think though, that I think I am me only because of the quantum effects of electrons in my brain.
knowledge of quantum physics is going to changes our lives in unimaginable ways in less than a 100 years
Who came here to watch it again after the Behind the Scenes video?
Me😸
Well if people can be resuscitated after their brain activity stops completely and be perfectly fine then teleportation shouldn't be that bad because both are pretty much exactly the same. In other words temporarily being unconscious for a certain amount of time. It should be safe as long as you're being transferred not copied, since it would be like blinking for a second then appearing elsewhere.
Could you possibly do a video on how a photobioreactor works, and how people could build one
I read a few years ago called Jump and it's set in a universe where teleportation is used for pretty much everything from porting people, food, deliveries etc. and a group of anti-porters debate that they would lose their original soul/body if they were to teleport and they call those who teleport... zombies? I think. I don't remember exactly.

+Care "clearly have to know about"
Nope, he doesn't HAVE to know about other people's videos.
+Care And why does he "clearly have to know" about it?
Chris Paul Gets Nasty Grey made a video directly addressing said video, did he not? So you're saying Henry watched one video but didn't watch the one uploaded soon after? Inplausible.
+Care I watched Grey's video but not the VSauce3 one, i don't see why what I did was implausible.
Care And just where did he "directly address" Vsauce3? You seem to be talking out of your ass. Also, "Inplausible."
The Wadsworth Constant definitely applies to this video!
Once you have all the state stored (assuming it isn't destroyed) you have a "game saved" point. Multiple copies of you can then be generated. So, if you are killed on a mission just restart from the "saved" point.
Watch the Prestige.
Is RUclips your only job? You should be working for a big company making BIG money with your knowledge.
+electronicsNmore He should be working for Tai Lopez with all this knowledge.
+electronicsNmore He studied physics and was presumably somewhat good at it. But you can't tell from this video if he was extraordinary good at it, as he just gives you a summary of the current state of science. You can not really tell, how good he really is at physics without studying physics yourself and reading some of his own papers.
But I would guess, his strenght is probably more melting a complex subject down and explaining it in a simple and explainatory way and not physics itself. And while that is great, it is not necessarily needed in a corporation but rather in education (which happens to be exactly what he does here).
I am sure that someone has already mentioned this, but here goes: Jake Roper also did a fabulous video about this and other paradoxes right after CGP Grey.
Hey, Minute Physics, I suggest looking at the latest Vsauce3 video, which happens to be on a similar subject. It's good enough that I hope you see fit to add a link to it in the description of this video. Here is how we could solve Teleportation:Wormhole generators. For the people outside the box it looks like you just disappear and reappear somewhere else but for you it looks like traveling super fast through that generated link between worlds.
Let's just not teleport. Any kind of teleportation we currently are thinking of involves killing the original.
The body you have at 20 years old doesn't have any of the same atoms in it that you had in it at birth, so all teleportation does is speed up the process radically.
good point.
+Graviton1066 That is very true, but doesn't it frighten you that you have to die in order to be recreated somewhere else? The 'you' at location b will be a different you, born just now, only born with your memories and experiences.
DutchKid121 I think its more semantics than MinutePhysics tends to say it is.
@@mikejones-vd3fg yes time travel but don't let person grabbing your arm and one person only
The Prestige? I love that movie!
Exactly what I was thinking but at first I don't know if people have think about it
But according to matpat's film theory you'd have no memories
Don't believe everything he says.
+beshoy tewfik You certainly would have memories. Memories are just groups of neurons that have been wired together in a particular way, making them physical alterations in your brain. They would be transferred as well as any other physical structure in your body. MatPat obviously doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to neuroscience.
+Elliot N He graduated with a degree in neuroscience. It's safe to assume he knows what he's talking about.
Skyro Charazkul So it looks like there's some misunderstanding with what he said, probably in regards to the teleportation technology being discussed. Of course the OP didn't link the video in question...
+Elliot N His Video had nothing to do with teleportation, hence the confusion here.
It was about "how to kill Deadpool" in regards to his healing. Because when his brain get's destroyed and then regenerates, it won't "regenerate" the memories.
this is completely different to a theoretical teleportation of a person using quantum teleportation.
This made me feel a bitbetter about teleportation, after cgp greys video i kinda didnt want to do it ever, now i just think it wouldnt be that terrible.
should we called a teleportation/portal a healing machine?
+Noah Kunti
Call it something doesn't give the idea that you'll die after you enter. I don't want to die yet. If I were given the option to go, I wouldn't if I knew I wouldn't be conscious anymore.
Chris Zamora teleportation basically cant transfering all particles of the subject,
You wouldn't be you if you teleport on another place lol
Fail Army just a 100% faithful copy whose existence prevents the existence of the original (exclusion principle or some such), thereby becomming you in any and every physical sense, except having the same atoms. But then again you don't have any of the atoms your 5 years old self had. All in all makes you wonder what you acctually are and what makes you, well, you.
There was a episode in the Outer Limits that covers this thing.
Quantum teleportation was actually mentioned and elaborated a bit in Star Trek: Enterprise
So, what your saying is not affecting the is the new you actually you but rather saying that they old you can not continue to exist.
+Lucid Moses exactly. But only if the teleporter uses quantum physics.
