  • A HAQ: Centre for Child Rights Film
    Direction and Screen Play by Avijit Dutt
    This film is based on HAQ' s project- Strengthening Governance to Prevent Child Marriage being implemented in West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh. HAQ: Centre for Child Rights along with its partners Jabala and MV Foundation has demonstrated that with a strong convergence of government systems and community efforts, child marriages can be prevented.
    The actors in the film are not professionals. They are from the community, and several of them are persons who work on preventing child marriages in their area, in their official capacity or as concerned members of the society.

    My mom married at 18, her life was a full hell. The new family never supported her only my dad did. She was so devastated she wanted to leave her studies midway because she had me at 19 and it was really hard to take care of me while studying. But my dad never let her lose her hope. My dad stayed awake all night taking care of me while my mom studied hard. Now because of my dad's support, both of them has successful jobs. I look up to them a lot.

    I remember in middle school, my best friend had to go back to India due to a "family emergency". Thats what all the teachers said and I didnt get a chance to say good bye. I didnt find out until a week before high school graduation when I learned that she was sent away to India to get married. She was 13 and her family sent her to her parents' birthplace to get married!! I remembered how close she and her brother were so I found him online and demanded answers.
    Yeah, she was 13 and sent to India to get married to a man well in his thirties because he needed a "good young bride" and her family needed money. He told me the last time he saw his sister was at her funeral. She died at 17 years old and she was beaten to death by her husband and father-in-law for refusing to sleep with the man.
    I hate her parents to this day. I hate them to death. I lost my best friend since 2nd grade because of them and their bullshit piece of culture. Sahrika dreamed of being a pilot and her parents sent her away to die and I will always hate them now and forever. I still miss my best friend after almost 15 years.

They see good status, good family and give away their daughters for good. Many times, the partners enjoy being with each other but few people suffer. This is awful. And it doesn’t just happen in India- although Americans have an undeserved moral superiority complex, here in the USA, child marriage is legal in every single state. In my state, Wisconsin, you can be married as young as 16 with parental consent (usually parental force, actually). In some, the age is as low as 14 with parental consent. And it *gets worse*. If you are 16 in Wisconsin and married to an adult (as is the case with most cases of child marriage), you then fall under guardianship of your spouse until you’re 18 (our age of majority). Rather than your parents being your legal guardian, your spouse is. That means your spouse can choose not to let you have a bank account or a car or go to college. And you cannot file for divorce while you’re married to your guardian, you have to go through the long, difficult process of emancipation, and usually the teens who find themselves in this situation do not have the resources or education to know where to begin. The vast majority of child marriages are arranged between a female teenage sexual assault/statutory rape or domestic abuse victim and her much older male abuser, often after she gets pregnant in order to prevent the “shame” of wedlock babies. I’m from rural Wisconsin and went to school with several girls who were married at 16/17 to their mid-20s boyfriends because they got pregnant. They all dropped out of high school before their babies were born. Those girls are 22/23 now and the two that got out are just now beginning to build their lives, get their GEDs, try to find jobs, etc. The minimum age for marriage should be 18 across the board, I don’t care who you are or how in love with you you think that 25 year old man is. And parents should always teach their children about healthy relationships, because the fact these girls’ parents let their 16 year olds marry adult men is horrible.

    • @GrahamCrackerss
      @GrahamCrackerss 2 года назад +8

      Its utterly disgusting to know that you fall under the guardianship of your spouse after child marriage, and that you don’t even know where to start filing for an emancipation. Its even more disgusting that some parents are *willing* to make their kids go through that hell. Completely absurd, and not to mention the rape and sexual abuse that you face by marrying men who are much older than you. It is a disgrace that this kind of thing is allowed, and not to mention how wrecked the lives of the young teen girls’ gets after getting pregnant and not getting the opportunity to explore the world.

      @@GrahamCrackerss ikr! I believe marriage is a partnership, where both have equal say. But if it turns into a guardianship then the spouse will be the master, right? Well I am not generalizing but most people will try to take advantage of this situation. I pray for those girls 🙏

    • @GrahamCrackerss
      @GrahamCrackerss 2 года назад +3

      @@Ultimate_maniac exactly, in partnership you have equal “power” over each other. Guardianship is just one partner, in this case the husband having power over the girl. And you are right! It's important to note that child marriage isn't just something that happens in third world countries. It happens in America all the time, with all these dumb "You can do this with parental consent at 13/15/16" laws in this country. My grandma was one brilliant student and had great dreams even as a child. But unfortunately her family married her off to my grandpa when she was only in 3rd standard. When she had kids(4 girls) she was pressurized to marry them off at a young age too. But being the powerful woman she is and with the support of my grandpa, she ignored all mockery and chose their children's education over anything else. My mother and my aunts are in a good position now and I can't imagine what life would have been without her

    No person should marry for anything beside love at an AGE WHERE YOU ARE ACTUALLY READY. People saying its a good match is a bad excuse. It might be a good match for your sake, but it's a bad match for your child, who has to deal with all kinds of possible issues. Rape, abuse, and child birth are only a few. Your body is still developing, so I cant imagine how much more painful it is. This was really beautiful, I hope the number of child marriages in countries around the world continues to stop.

    And child marriages hamper not only a girl's life but also the nation.....we should stop this........and the most pathetic fact that a underage girl either willingly gets married or elopes....i really don't know what to do with them
